Here's the cavern I used last Saturday for a 1st level D&D game. I'll finish the adventure this Saturday.

The fiendish dire rats near the entrance were very hungry and very aggressive. Though the party was victorious against them, the Dwarf fighter Durosh fell victim to the slavering jaws of a particularly nasty rat.

The darkmantles in the second portion were difficult, especially in the zone of darkness that they created. The trio of skeletons that arose from the water gave the party a bit of a start. The blind cave fish in the water attracted the attention of Golmun, brother to Durosh (his replacement in the party). His splashing attracted the attention of another wandering darkmantle, and the Dwarf nearly joined his brother in death.

Wait 'till they meet the drow cleric of Lolth and her eight-legged servants. :D

Nice layout, Kradlo!

Gotta love that horde of RATS when those characters first walk in...Welcome to the dungeon!

Poor Durosh! That must have been one nasty Dire Rat! The "house rules" must be pretty sinister there : )

Long live Golmun!

The coloring... Is it the lighting or have you repainted the pieces?

No repainting of the cavern set, just the way things look in the light downstairs.

As for the house rules, I'm giving the players action points and reserve points from Unearthed Arcana, and I'm using the Instant Kill option from pg 28 of the DMG. Poor Durosh had his throat ripped out by a rat that got 20 - 20 - 19.

The fiendish darkmantles were a fun addition. I love the sculpts from Magnificent Egos. They're such a great ambush predator, perfect for caverns and dungeons.

Nice lay-out. Yes - with some lucky roll from the GM surprises can happen. Reminds me of a 7th level Paladin in my previous campaign who got killed by 2 ordinary Orks. I think he needed a 3 to hit them. And they a 15+ to hit back. After losing Ini he gets a crit - taking off some 25 odd HP. He carries on to fight defensivly - adding +2 to his AC but failing three times in a row by roling 4th which suddenly are just too low. Another Crit and a normal hit and this was the end of the Paladin ...

Same player later gets bitten nastily by some ordinary rats. Having roled a crit to hit him I ruled that in this case even an ordinary rat will be able to inflict filth feaver - albeit with a +4 on the save. Well - poor player - had to live with the taunts being the first to get infected by an ordinary rat.

Oh - and then they met a Dark Mantle as well. 4 Players, average level 2 1/2. I had no figure (love yours !!) soI only told them it is suddenly dark around them. Got them absolutely scared. The ranger/thief (same player as above - some always have the luck) goes down. Grapple attacks works first round - and can't remember what he tried - but it was not to get rid of the grapple but something pretty stupid. The remaining group runs scared - leaving him to the Dark Mantle on his own. Oh yes - after a while they poke into the dark - close to floor height - off course impaling their own comrade - not the Darkmantle. Not sure if it was good that the Ranger/Thief was just on -11 or 12 HP when he would have lost some more due to the Paladin in the group.

The same group before managed to kill a (albeit very young) red dragon in the same module. No - they never managed to get the Dark Mantle. It's still flying around in the dungeon.

The first attack against the halfling rogue put him unconscious and dying just from the slam attack. The darkmantle skipped the grapple attack. Yes, perhaps I was being kind, but I figure the darkmantle would cease to attack a creature that was unconscious and concentrate on the other threats facing it. It gave the other PCs a chance to save their friend.

With darkness being ruled as concealment with a 20% miss chance, it makes the darkmantles difficult, but not impossible to fight. Ogruk, the half-orc barbarian, swung mightily and missed due to the shadowy gloom.

There's still one more fiendish darkmantle waiting in the cavern, posing as a harmless stalactite. It knows enough to ignore skeletons (no meat on those bones), and learned to stay away from the Drow cleric and her spider companions (there's a darkmantle corpse near her feet, as the players will learn).

Oh, and Ogruk, the half-orc barbarian, is already showing symptoms of filth fever. The halfling rogue will show symptoms the next day. I only had them make one Fortitude save each, rather than one for each bite. I didn't want to be too hard on them.

Those darkmantle figures are excellent. I checked the Magnificent Egos website, but couldn't find them. Which range are they from?

The darkmantles are from Magnificent Egos MEO4023, Dungeon Terrors. The blister contains a darkmantle, a will o' the wisp, and a floating skull.

The skull would be perfect for the demi-lich Acererak from the Tomb of Horrors. I think it's even got gems in its eye sockets.

Note that the flying bases provided in the blister are 25mm slottabases with a T-shaped post (the flat side fits into the slot perfectly). I used the clear plastic posts from GW flying bases for two of my darkmantles, to give them varying flying heights.

Great mins! Did Magnificent Egos have a booth at Gencon? I think I remember pursuing it… But I don’t remember this blister. I would have gotten at least four, maybe even six packs. The darkmantels are a cavern must, and will o’ wisp’s are just too cool of an encounter. I’ve made them out of small cotton swabs for past adventures.

Six demi-lich’s might be just a bit much, but a lich animating six flying skulls could be a riot. Anyway you look at it there are plenty of possibilities here because it’s such a well rounded blister with great sculpts’ of some oddities.

Thanks for sharing

Yes, Magnificent Egos had a booth at GenCon, and it was sweeeet! Sandra Garrity was there, the sculpting maven, and she's just the nicest lady. I actually picked up seven blisters of Dungeon Terrors, but I only put four together so far.

Think of a demi-lich doing mirror image. That's just a start. Plus the old animated skull with magic mouth can be a fun trick.

I'm enjoying running games again. Oh, the evil that I have planned! Bwah ha ha!
