So, I didn't want to wait for the official DF swimming lizardmen ambushers...

Take some GW skinks, and gets cuttin'! If you carve 'em right, there are no balance issues, so you can just put them right on the water for a neat partial-submerge effect. With the ones holding blowpipes, I had to base them to keep them upright -- I'll be adding that transluscent gloss effect later, but I wanted to get some pics up right away.

More painting and refining are on the way, of course. But I like these guys a lot -- so far I have 10, I may do the full 24 that come in a box...

Looks like somebody couldn't wait for the Lizardman Ambushers from the Lake Set!

Good conversions, and nice paint jobs on the skinks!

@#$@$ straight! I really love the idea of having partially-submerged creatures. It's one of the fun things about water.

Seriously, this stuff is a dream come true for me -- and I love coming up with new things for it...

Anyhoo, here are some better pictures. Thanks for the kind words on the skinks -- it was just a light yellow basecoat and then a dark green inkwash, then a little highlighting. There's much more to go.

These guys were really fun - I can see a place or two where they don't lie COMPLETELY flat, but I'd say they were about 80-90% successful. I may trim a little more to try to improve them, but in the end, I think I'm happy.

(You can't get "perfect" anyway, since the shadow cast by the creature reveals a gap between them and the riverbed -- you'll always be able to tell there's something off, it's why the best solution is simply to put the thing in the space and THEN pour the resin, if you REALLY want a partially submerged item -- like how Stefan handled the stalagmites...)

They look awesome! Who makes the metal minis you made those skinks from, by the way? And what exactly are skinks? Since I saw in your other post you do stuff with resign, have you thought of making little water "rings" to hide the almost imperceptible boundry with the water like Steffan did with his lizardman ambushers?

The skinks are from Games Workshop -- and these are plastic. They make both metal and plastic versions of the models, but the plastics are cheaper, and much easier to cut up and reposition.

I did use a little base on some of them, which I will cover with clear gloss gel, like I did with the tentacle bases. That approximates the base Stefan did for the ambushers, but his is of course far superior. I can't do an all-resin base, I don't know how, and I don't think I have the right materials. Still, since the stuff I use isn't entirely transparent anyway, I figured it would work as a coating over the green stuff base.

As for the tiny gap on the remaining skinks -- it is nearly impossible to see normally. These are EXTREMELY close-up pictures, under harsh direct lighting. Normal table use, you don't see anything that gives away the illusion...

L -

If you're using a self-leveling clear resin, try using a piece of Teflon-coated plastic, such as some of the cutting boards that were out a few years ago, and pour onto that, then set your half-skink in it as it starts to set up.
Or, you might try some wax paper under your pour; I don't KNOW that that would work, but it's worth a try. I haven't found many things that WILL stick to wax paper, even if you WANT them to!

Just a thought from the Mad yank.

See ya!

L -

I have a bunch of old GW plastic skinks that I was never going to do anything with (except sell on Ebay) but you've managed to give them a "stay of execution" with your inspiring photos !! FANTASTIC !!

OK, I did a few more. I decided the skinks looked like they could probably be a bit more gymnastic, probably capable of more elaborate feats of swimming prowess, so I tried to communicate that with more elaborate poses.

I particularly like the lazy one. Is he like Ferdinand the Bull, just a stargazer and not interested in battle? Or is he just smugly showing off how easy it is for him to be deadly?

Is the skink in the last photo diving for crayfish, or is he retrieving a dropped cell phone?

We all love these photos you’ve been posting L. And or jealousy is only matched by our impatience waiting for our order to arrive.
“Soon”… that’s what I keep telling the gang. We already have a handful of setups planned for the new sets we’re getting. And then there’s the GenCon giant in the planning. And it’s been conceived using a considerable amount of the newer sets…
So, as you can gather, we can’t wait! It’s going to be like Christmas in July when they arrive!!! Well maybe early August…and just in the nick-of-time for the con!

Keep the pics coming!
