Just checking I haven't forgotten how to paint this stuff! Four as an initial test, before going on to do the other 26...

Black spray primer, dark grey undercoat, dark brown drybrush, mid stone drybrush, very faint drybrush of light stone.

Day-um, son! That is AWESOME!

Seriously, Phil, that is some excellent work on those pillars. If you're not standing tall and proud, you should be!

See ya!

Thanks Sadyan and Jim!

We actually used 'em tonight. I hadn't really intended to, but the big room I'd made (where some orcs were 'teasing' a troll) for our on-going WFRP2 game looked a bit bare. Rather than fishing out the good old DF red pillars, I grabbed my new ones and used those. The rabble (all bar one who knows his DF) didn't even realise they weren't DF until it was pointed out, by the player who knows, that they weren't DF pillars and to clinch it there were another 26, only partly painted, sat on my workbench. Lots of jaws dropping - though I really don't know why: after 20-odd years of gaming together they ought to know by now that I can make all sorts of stuff.

Incidentally, the troll nearly won, but the orcs ran away before the party could kill more than two of them. Several characters are somewhat battered and bruised, one should have been dead, but expended a fate point, so is now 'merely' missing his left arm...

:-)

Trolls in WFRP2 are pretty nasty. 3 attacks per round, plus a stinking, acidic, vomit attack, lots of toughness, strong as a whole herd of oxen, and they re-generate D10 wounds each round... So they're vicious and nearly unkillable, unless you get a lot of characters all getting good hits in one round. Their drawback is that they're incredibly stupid and are apt to get sidetracked and forget what they're doing. This one failed his intelligence roll, decided to stop fighting and eat the character who was dying, but then got clobbered by the rest of the party whilst doing so.

My group recently got into WFRP2 and, I must say, it is extremely addictive.

Yes, they've turned out well - I finished the other 26 this evening too, so now I've got more 'Moria' pillars than I know what to do with. Tomorrow I'll try to make a setup that uses all 30 and photograph it. I'm not sure I have enough floor to make a big enough room to use them all though.

Alas, I'm not allowed to sell them - verboten by GW. :(

Well, I'm not one to encourage vice and moral depravity -- but since it's GW, I'll say a little somethin' somethin'....

...about selling something like this -- if you listed these on ebay as columns for 25-30mm terrain, in the style of Tolkein, I sincerely doubt you'd have any problems with GW.

1) Too many people list unofficial terrain for GW to keep track of them all. I've sold tons of terrain on eBay, stuff I made with HA, and like many people I list it as "Terrain for use with Warhammer" to get hits. I sometimes include a disclaimer, I usually don't. Never heard a peep.

2) The worst they'd do is send a cease and desist, maybe get ebay to pull the auction.

It really is up to you -- if you have moral reservations, or if you really don't feel it is worth a risk, then that's one point. But if you simply don't think you can get away with something quite reasonable . . .

I mean, if we're following the letter of the law here, GW has the rights to do movie-based LOTR merch, and this counts. On the other hand, these could simply be columns for a fantasy world inspired by the books, and that is totally copyright-free.

I don't know. My moral intution does sorta tell me that selling these isn't kosher, but to quote Raising Arizona, "I dunno, I mean, there's what's right and there's what's right, and ne'er the twain shall meet...."

Are they an exact copy of something from the movie?

I'm sure it would never have been even close to being an issue if you hadn't asked GW in the first place.

On a completely different note; How do you make that rough structure on the pillars and the floor?

Very, very nice work, by the way. :)

As for the floor, you'd have to ask Stefan - that's a DF piece! On the pillars though, it's all my own work. Starting from the plasticard master, seen as 'bare plastic' another thread on here somewhere, I mix up a 'slurry' of Humbrol Model Filler and 'Mek Pak' liquid ploystyrene cement - quite thick, but not so thick that it won't paint on. I paint that on the surface with an old brush (about 0.5 - 1mm thick) and then get to work stippling with another old brush, poking it around with various tools and suchlike. The slurry sets up fairly fast, but can be turned back to slurry quite readily by dipping the brush in the bottle of cement.

Lastly, to make sure the surface isn't too rough (very rough surfaces tend to reduce mould life significantly), I paint it very gently with cement again, just taking the tops off the humps and bumps. And then leave it to set really hard for a couple of days before sending it off for casting.

Very, very nice work, by the way. :)
Thank you!
