Sci-Fi set used at Havoc XXII w/ multi-level base 8 Years, 7 Months ago
Went up to Havoc XXII in Mass the week of 31MAR - 02APR06. Always a nice little con which is about 85% mini's and 15% boardgames (No LARPing, CCG or RPG). It always draws about 250 - 300 people and is put on by Battlegroup Boston. I ran a Stargrunt scenario and used the multiple sets of sci-fi stuff as the underground base.

The scenario was basically an underground base of insurgents has been found through intel. 2 or 3 known leaders were there. The entrance was known to be inside a "bonded warehouse" at the edge of the primary starport (a bonded warehouse normally has armed guards- so seeing a squad of armed men would arouse no suspicion). An ad-hoc unit of government forces are sent in to take out the base and capture/kill the leaders.

The players ran the government forces (6 squads: 1 heavy power armor in assualt VTOL, 1 Light power armor in assault VTOL, 1 light power armor in heavy APC, then 3 squads of veteran troppers in light APCs). I gave them about 5 minutes to come up with a battle plan and then off we went!

My friend Glenn ran the entire enemy force. The enemy force was semi-scripted- certain units could not move/activate until the players "tripped" certain events. We used a map to track underground and hidden movement of enemy forces. Additionally. the security consoles could possibly be accessed by specialists on the player team- some provided intel while other let them "use" security cameras to see sections of other levels. Since this was an introduction game my goal was not to kill the players but to give them a good fight.

As a note- the 3rd level of the base has 3 curving corridor sections that appears to double back. This was actually described as a downward sloping corridor that led to non-essential barrack areas and an escape tunnel for the VIPs. The tunnel went up with the exit being the blue shipping container just outside the bonded warehouse which was the grey building on the table.

SHort version- the scenario went well but they never penetrated the 3rd level as we ran out of time. The players dithered on the ground level trying to mop-up remnants of the surface ground force. However, they did capture the most valuable target before game end.

Taking a que from others here (i.e. Jkratzer, et al) I made a 3 level plexi-glass shelf system to represent the underground bunker. It was quite a hit- both the DF stuff and the shelving. My version of how to stack them was I started with 1/4" plexi cut into 24" x 30" sheets and 1/4" hole drilled about 1 1/2" in from each corner. The "rods" are 1"x1" square wooden rails cut into 12" lengths. The knobs up top are wooden drawer pulls.

I drilled out the wood rails and used 1/4-20 x 20mm insert nuts made by House-Mates (bought at Home Depot). Basically you drill out a hole and the nuts go in using a hex wrench. For the knobs I used 1/4-20 x 13mm insert nuts that need to be hammed in place. I then used a four 2" pieces (rails) and four 1 1/2" pieces (knobs) of 1/4-20 threaded rod and loctited them in place. The "feet" were simple 1/4-20 x 1" bolts and washers. Putting everything together just means screwing everything together and the wood "self tightens" providing a snug fit againts the plexi.

Also- as a build note: Plexi can be purchased at any place that does glass windows, etc. My local glass store cut what I needed, rounded the edges and drilled the holes for $90 for all 3 sheets. The rails, knobs, inserts and rods was maybe another $20 and all of this came from Home Depot.

Hey Blackhawk1!

First of all, welcome to the forums!
Second of all, I fear you've outdone me! SERIOUSLY!
Damn but that looks good! Even though the wood doesn't have the same visual impact as the all-Lucite version, that Wood column at each corner (by the way, you used the same spacing on the corners as I did) is classy! And, using the wood means you can stain it and glosscoat it, which will DEFINITELY look sexy as Hell!
I also liked the minis; where do they come from?
One thing I did differently, after ReBob and I argued (our normal method of inspiration, don't worry) about force doors. It looks like you have a big red sponge for forcefield doors; check my one pic that shows the cross-corridor intersection. We cut a 1/2" piece of lucite and I airbrushed Tamiya Clear Red along the vertical and top edges, to simulate a heavy forcefield, similar to the ones that come with the door arches in the sets. I only painted one side, but we both liked the effect it gave. Whatcha think?

Good job, BlackHawk1. Again, Welcome Aboard!

See ya!

LOL!

Thank you for the compliments. And I may be new to the forums but I also have a lot of DF stuff- about 2 of every set (in some cases 3) including narrow passages, etc. I've been buying DF ever since I saw it at GenCon years ago.

The red is actually not a force field- its a shipping crate. The forces protecting the base got to put up hasty barricades if they expended actions to do so. My friend running the bad guys had 3 red barricades which represented hard cover and 6 white that represented soft cover. He managed to get 2 soft and 1 hardcover set-up on the 2nd level before it got breached.

The mini's are from GZG (Ground Zero Games). They are the UN Light power armor, NAC heavy power armor, NAC regular soldiers and mercs.

GZG also makes a boat load of odd interior stuff like boxes, bio-med tanks, power coils, etc etc.

Jim, Geo-Hex in their Capricorn Space division produced the GZG Stargrunt, Full Thrust and Dirtside minis here in the States for years before KR closed up shop.
Start looking at your LGS to see if they just might have some of these figures still around.
They came in blisters of three figures usually.

I can send anyone who wants the old Geo-Hex promo pics for the Stargrunt line that was on KR's WEB page.
A significant minority were painted by my wife and I.

I will second Blackhawk1's enthusiastic response about GZG figures.
Do you remember the crates I put pics up of?
www.dwarvenforge.com/dwarvenforums/viewtopic.php?id=937
Those are GZG crates.

This is also the figure line that I was encouraging to folks here who wanted to play in true25 that someone was heavily disparaging the sculpting of saying they were way out of proportion.
Here are some quick pics I took just now of some GZG minis I had out.
Sorry, the only camera at home right now is an old 1Mp one; nicer one got left at Fort Lewis or Mountain Home AFB last week.
Will check on its whereabouts when I cycle back through again in 2-3 weeks.

The first is Marta from the Gentleman's Collectable series.
She is the only one not half naked and is a good secret agent figure.
With some of the figures in this collection you could really spice up those Miami Vice scenes that IO did a while back.

Second is a squad wearing berets made from mixed NAC & Merc figures.

Third is NAC Power Armor squad.

Fourth is a group of NSL Shutztruppen in combat armor.

Fifth is specifically the deader and wounded figures for the NSL.
GZG also makes such figs for the NAC and the UNSC along with generic filled body bag figs for deaders for all of the other factions.

Sixth is a an OUDF squad in boonie hats.

GZG makes lines of true25 troopers that can cover a great variety of terrain, everywhere from artic to desert conditions in the manner of their dress/uniforms.
They even have a OUDF trooper wearing a combat helmet and baggies surfing just for fun; unless of course the only way your troops can get to the battlefield is via surfboard.
Plus, they do decent civilians!

Funny you should say that about starship troopers- GZG makes a line of true 25mm figs and vehicles based off of Hammers Slammers. They are the official figs/vehicles for the HS rules set. All figs and vehicles were personally OKed by Drake.

They make the blowers, tanks and cars plus varied HS troopers. For indigenous forces figs/vehicles just purchase any of the other GZG lines.

They also make 3 different Predator figs in 25mm.

And as rabid said- I think Marta is the only fig from the "gentleman's" line that can be used in public!

There are a few other publically clothed figures in the line, but no other combat-ready ones.
GZG calls her "Nadia" BTW; "Marta" is what KR at G-H called her.
The other GC figs clothed enough for public would have to be used as civilians.

Nice Risers!

The threaded wooded legs look nice and stable…

I like Jim’s idea too of dressing up the legs…Maybe even make pillars out of dowels and scraps, and then paint them to match the miniature DF pillars (fantasy or Sci-Fi). I don’t know …could be kinda cool.

Or; use the same technique here, but instead use clear acrylic rods with the threaded rods. Then you’re back to all clear acrylic.

Anyway you want to go; the threaded rods are a great solution to the strength issues…

Still over here in the dark ages with our Hollow Plastic Legs… Still holding, but I have plans to make a solid legged set for Gen Con.

I too, wonder how the Stargrunt game went.
I read the description on the PEL, and "Rat's in a Hole" sounded fun.
It was a shame you did not put forward on the PEL that the terrain being used was the latest in Dwarven Forge product.
Looks like there was a character or word limit though; none of the descriptions on the PEL were all that long.

How was the fleamarket this year?

I never seem to be able to get back to Havoc since #IV in Waltham; it was a fabulous miniature wargame con then, and I am sure it has done nothing but get better.
Getting married and then having children does put a bit of a damper on the pocket book and thereby travel at times.
Maybe next year - XXIII.
Will it still be in Shrewsbury next year?

Hi!

I tried to post a reply to IO about the risers yesterday but either the DF Forum server went wacko, or my PC did; it never got posted.
Anyway, what I thought of was to take the acrylic posts and wrap Plastruct Random Stone, or Dressed Stone around them for either Cavern or Dungeon use; for Sci-Fi, glue Plastruct or Evergreen rods or pipes to the acrylics for piping, half-rounds for wiring (those could actually be squiggly, like loose cables) and rectangles or squares of .040 styrene for junction boxes and stuff. Paint as appropriate, and you'd have something similar to the Power Columns from the Alpha set, only as riser posts. The Cavern risers in grey, and the dressed stone in either grey or Rust, and voila, you've got rocks!
I may have to buy some extra acrylic rods and try those myself. Mike, you've done it to me again! AAARGH!

See ya!
