Hi folks,

I just finished my first scratchbuilt 'Dwarven Forge' piece, so I thought I'd post a photo or two. It's not one of those multi-layered, wonderful set-ups, but just that one piece quickly posed on my workbench with a few others, plus a couple of minis, to show what I made. I might make a big set-up tomorrow, when I've more time (and a willing helper- my ten-year-old!).

As some of you know, my gaming is largely driven by the Lord of the Rings, and GW's game has become a firm favourite. With that (and roleplaying) in mind, I've wanted a 'Bridge at Khazad Dum' pretty much since I started to collect DF pieces. And now I have one.

The basic shape was first drawn to scale in Illustrator (and sent to Stefan, who no doubt thought 'he'll never make one of those!'). Then I got out a load of plasticard (styrene sheet if you're a colonial :) ) and used the drawing to cut out all the bits I needed, which were duly glued together. The 'flagstones' on the top were made by cutting out thin sheets of plasticard, gluing them on top of the bridge, and the 'thickness' of them was simulated with some thick strip styrene.

Texturing - the 'underneath' was done simply by spraying with a can of textured primer. The flagstone sides were textured by 'scribing' the strip styrene with a hot soldering iron (with a very fine tip) and the flagstone tops were textured by making a fairly thick 'slurry' of Humbrol model filler and liquid poly cement, which was painted on. As it began to dry I stippled it with brushes, pressed pieces of stone fom my drive into it, and generally abused it.

It was then primed grey (a mix of my own - GW Chaos Black, plus Codex Grey, plus a bit of Scorched Brown and then some Bleached Bone until I got a colour like the base colour of DF dungeon stuff). I drybrushed the flagstones with a dark brown (Foundry 42A), then a couple of greys (Foundry 34B and C). Then I drybrushed again with Foundry 29B to begin to get the highlights.

Examining my DF pieces I found that under the flagstones was a reddish brown colour, so I drybrushed those areas with Foundry 54A and 37A.

I finished off by drybrushing everything with Foundry 29C and then giving the whole beast a generous squirt of Testors' Dull Cote.

I'm quite pleased with the result. The piece itself should work well, and the colour has worked out well - Dwarven Forge pieces vary quite a bit, and it has turned out somewhere sort of 'mid-range' colourwise.

Cheers,
Phil

Very very nice! And we get to feel the stress of the battle, watching you wrestle with the protocols of posting pics! ;)

Extremely well-integrated into DF, and a great looking bridge to boot!
