Hi

Here is the actual devils head as used in my game. The big photo was actually made after the game just before storing everything away. For the 'Sandworms' I used the stats for Griggs - modified for the larvae, medium sized ones and bigger ones. In addition I had hidden/buried some small critters (viper, tiny spider, small rat) in the sand together with 3 tokens for treasure.

The idea was instead of rolling the dice, that palyers actually would be allowed to dig for the treasure. Didn't work - I have a Hack&Slash group - they killed the last worm but never bothered to search the room for anything else.

About using sand: I've played around with sand a little by now. You can build up a pile in a passage way, or you fill out holes. The sand I used is bird-sand - it has some added grit for the birds. I just had it around for our birds - but it looks more natural as sand from a sandpit.

Cleaning up is relative easy - you scrape 98% of the sand back into the bag for reusage and hoover up the remaining 2%. I have to warn purists though. The water bits are sticky. I'm not sure if this is just my set, or if it is due to proximity to the sea (200 m away) and high humidity. In my early trials I got some sand into some of the puddles and a few sand corns still stick in there and wouldn't come out with a brush or water.

But have fun. If you don't mind a little bit of mess, then sand is a simple way to change your dungeon for an evening.

This is cool too…

Man Thod, the sand idea is a totally untapped resource for these MM setups. I had a few miniatures in a tray of heavy flock a few weeks ago and I started laughing how it looked like they were sinking in quicksand. I thought it would be cool to make a double stacked long passage with the flock in a few lower exposed sections of the hall. This would act as quicksand and each round I could wiggle the PC's miniatures in a little deeper in a combat.

But here, I really like how you filled in the empty space between the cavernous pieces. And the lone half buried DoE piece looks ancient buried ruins or the like.

VERY COOL!!!!

great idea thod!

i planned out a dungeon that used the passgeways in the same way, except i used black cloth underneath to give the impression of a deep and dark hole then used the rock slabs as an altar jutting out over it. i still haven't gotten to use it because the players decided to pick up and leave the area, but hopefully they'll return sooner or later... it was actually heavily inspired by the set up you did(i think) based on an old module where the overhead view showed a figure with a spear pointing north. if they return i'll post some pics...

makes the negative space really work for you...

Dudebird, you are aware that I post here as well? Way to spill the beans!

Note, there are many different colors and grades of sand available at a good aquarium/pet store. I'm sure one variety would match DF color-wise.

Hi

Thanks for all the great feedback. I will try to answer your questions:

How messy is it:

It depends what you use. I've posted some alternative filling material below.

The order of messyness is: sand > catlitter > grit

I was suprised aboutthe cat litter - but while it is pretty big pieces there is some dust there as well.

Also in regard of messyness:

Cavern with water pools > other DF pieces > outside of pieces (like filling holes)

And a last remark: using bow-ties before the filler is messy. For some stupid reason I used them and you have to dig them out of the filling material - not recommended.

Now the monsters:
Griggs are in D&D 3rd edition Monster Manual. They are a kind of worms with tentacles. 2d8 hp, AC16, Damage tentacle 1d4+2, bite 1d3+1, 4 tentacle rakes +3, bite -2. In addition they have damage reduction 15/1.

I used as miniatures some worms from Excalibur (some miniature tabletop army). 14 worms for 20 Euro. I modified the stats: Larvae - 4 HP, Damagae reduction 5, only bite attack. Medium sized worms - 8/9 HP, Damage reduction 10, 2 rake attacks, 1 bite. Full adult - 13 HP, 2 rake attacks (they only have two arms) and Damage reduction 15. The damage reduction stems from a rubbery thick hide. I therefore ruled a plus 1 weapon only suffered half the above damage reduction.

I used the Griggs because I was originally looking for some Carrion Crawler at a fair in Germany (Spielertage Essen, Stefan was there 4 years ago). I was disappointed in the offers or prices (would have got a single one for 15 Euro - albeit pretty nice looking). I then settled for the worms as the closest I got - and afterwards looked through the monster manual cover to cover for worms - well - found a good template already at G.

I have added three more photos. The first one - the Sandune is from November. This was messy !! It was prior to the Sand Devil. The other two just experimented for this posting.

Enjoy
