Cleverly done, Gary!

I can honestly say that that's a set-up I was NOT expecting! ...a Temple of Doom!

Pretty cool!

OK...Like Shadox, this is my very first post of a set-up here of the boards....

All is quiet in the temple this day, though the flame still burns with the strength of the souls that have been consigned to it and the summoning chamber patiently awaits the return of a High Priest's sweet call to those from beyond.....

gdmcbride,

You Rock!! Nice idea. It would not have been what I expected to see posted. Way to think outside the box.

Harneloot,

Great job!! It is nice to see that I an not the only newbie posting here.

Jeff, Stefan,

These contests are going to be cool. Many ideas are going to come from this.

Harneloot, I love your layout! ...and that last shot was CREEPY! I wish the overall lighting had been a little bit brighter though in the first 4 shots, but it's probably just me -- maybe even my old monitor here.

Nice job!

Thanks Ghostmage!

I actually purposefully turned the flash off so the pitures would be dimmer and more creepy...my subtle form of "reverse mood lighting" I guess?

Well, my entry is READY! Can't post pics until my wife gets back, which means mid-week I should have some stuff up.

Of course, my camera battery died almost immediately, so now I have to leave this stuff in the middle of my apartment all day until it charges. Grrr!

Anyhoo, before I post the pics, a few words about the contest and my entry:

1. I'm very grateful for the contest itself, though I'm not confident (look at my old pics, you'll notice I rarely use DoE, and I even LESS often make setups with pieces from only one genre of set... and even LESS often do I post pics without Grendel accessories, Reaper minis, etc....)

2. This was a chance for me to stretch my imagination with DoE and try to come up with something really cool. Without this contest, I doubt I'd ever have done anything as neat with my DoE sets. It was a blast to play around with them, and really fun to try to use all of them in creative ways.

3. I don't like using pieces in totally non-traditional ways (i.e. using a floor turned on its side for a wall, etc) but I do like finding neat, unexpected uses for pieces that don't COMPLETELY go against their original intended use....

4. In the end, my setup is somewhat traditional, not all that "outside the box," but there are some really cute touches (at least, I think so) and I am proud of it. One key concept for it: symmetry..... (and the occasional, slightly jarring disruption of symmetry.....)

5. Luckily, only one of my pieces was taken out of the game due to customization -- I only had one large floor piece to work with, since I "scorched" the other one from the WA set, in order to give myself two distinct pieces rather than a duplicate one. In the end, I am not sure it mattered -- I don't think there's a place in my setup where I COULD have used another large floor piece, and I really like what I came up with.

Boy, keeping to five pics is HARD! After the contest results have been announced (so as not to risk biasing anyone), I will be posting a LOT more pics of my setup in the Cool Photos section! Plus, some of those are gonna have Reaper and GW and WOTC figures in them, because it's too tempting to populate the DoE with my favorite extra-planar monstrous boogies!

This was a lot of fun, I'm really looking forward to the contests involving the MBS, cavern sets, and dungeon sets.

I know this isn’t required for the contest, but it’s just how I tend to design layouts, so here is the background for what you see.

I went with something designed for use in a game session. I kind of came up with the idea that this was a once abandoned outpost of a government, that has perhaps been now brought into use by something new, or a long lost cult associated with the older source of power.

The front area is where the old ruler would have meet with the subjects to listen to grievances or hold court. The old throne is now missing, and a simple chair sits on the dais in its place, perhaps a quest is in order to find or replace it to restore the old power. The audience room has two tables on each side one for the scribe, and another to hold refreshment. I tried to give the idea of room separation and delineate different rooms in a largely open set up by putting in the curved floor bits to give the sense of a break in the larger front room.

To gain entrance into the rest of the complex one must pass through the arch, it is held up by the 4 way passage, and the upper room would be removed in the game to revile what ever guards would be in place, now in the abandoned state it remains empty. Beyond the 4 way are sealed doors that go off into other sections of the complex that must first be opened. One contains a treasure room; the other now houses the priests who inhabit the temple. At the places height possibly it housed the ruler’s room. These areas also lead to the large hall at the top, now guarded by skeletons of the cult, perhaps raised from the bones of the dead who once inhabited this place…
The temple room is beyond all, where the gods of the past where worshiped, now an evil cult, presides, a raised alter dominates the room, guarded by more skeletons. On the altar rests their vial tome, a sacrificial knife, and a bowl for collecting sacrifices. Rooms/alcoves off to the back once held priests, now items of worship. Pews and chairs fill the space before the altar. Behind the altar and guarded by a final skeleton is the entry way to the temples vault. The vault contains a treasure most sacred to the temple, and rests secured on a pillar designed to place it close to the gods.

Ghengis Ska

Really nice layout - and I love the use of all the DF accesories. My room set should be at the post office tomorrow after work. I feel in some aspects my ideas have some similarity - in regard to the raised floor and the overall symmetry (with treasure rooms in each site). No - I haven't been stealing any ideas and I hope it still will be pretty different.

Just couldn't build anything up yet. Will have to be a night shift one of the next days ... At least your layout gives me confidence that mine on a piece of scratch paper will actually work.

HOLY CRAP!!!

Especially like the fact that you erased out (in photoshop?) all of the picture that wasn't your set-up so there is nothign to distract the eye and break the "spell"

Nice job!
