I figured, what with the recent reboot and the fact that DoE is now shipping, it was a good time to start a fresh thread for DoE expansion suggestions. The last one kinda turned into a general request list, so I also thought it might be nice to have a DoE-specific thread. Tons of cool requests for dungeon/sci-fi/cavern sets will have to find their own thread... ;)

SO -- now that I've had some time to look and experiment, here's what I'd like to see...

Just about everything I can think of has already been done in some form or other, but would work REAL well in the DoE setup...

1. Big floors. Absolutely essential. A 3x3 floor piece, maybe doesn't even need any special deco -- just make it possible to build big rooms easier.

2. Long walls. See #1 above.

3. Self-standing columns. It's tempting to suggest four of those cool gargoyles, but I'm not sure if that would be sturdy enough. Still, columns are not only decorative, they make great supports for the aforementioned big floor piece. Cool stuff.

4. Grand staircase. On my original list. Updated version of the spiral stairs -- though I wouldn't want spiral stairs here, just a big staircase on a 2x2 footprint -- or free-standing, for placement on the floor directly.

5. Crevasse. Big scary broken floor with heaven-knows-what underneath...

6. Some kind of wall-with-a-hole-in-it. Three options come to mind:
a. Crumbling, smashed hole with hints of recent violence.
b. Dripping, sagging hole with hints of otherworldly rents and tears....
c. Barred hole with a nice prison feel to it.

7. Big prison grates in the floor -- a 2x2 piece instead of a single floor square this time, to suggest that some BIG nasties are imprisoned down there....

8. Various free-standing accessories:

a. Bookshelves of EEeeeevil
b. Candelabras of Eeeeevil
c. Dais....of eeeeevil
d. Altar/Idol/Statue to Eeeevil
e. Pentagram
f. Evil fountain
g. Evil throne
h. Evil bed

I'd also recommend various kinds of fun in-wall or in-floor decos like

a. more tentacles
b. a giant eyeball
c. narsty spikes
d. teeth

or so forth.

Anyhoo, now that people are going to be working with the DoE sets, I'm looking forward to seeing what kinds of suggestions regular useage leads to.....

I like L's list so much, I just want to chime in to second it. I'm not as interested in the crevasse or prison grates as the other stuff mentioned on the list (though I would be interested in it too, just not as much as the other stuff listed). I definetely think the next expansion should have both big floors (in fact I'd prefer the 4" by 6" or 6" by 6" floors) and long walls (preferably 6") and also the neat special pieces like the stair case, free standing gargoyle columns, evil throne, bookshelf, altar, etc.

Alas the hacker caused my posts to go byebye but as I recall: mirrored walls/floors, a 6'x6' "vortex tile"...hey, a blood font would be cool, too.

Please re-post any other ideas you might have had regarding the next DoE set. We REALLY do plan our sets around your feedback!

Thanks much.

I think we need a dead end piece. There are passages everywhere, but I don't have enough room pieces to make them go anywhere. I could through them in there if I had some dead ends.

I hate following up to my own post, but I have been playing with my DoE set to see what I can build, and what I think are needed are some pieces to help 'fill in'. I see some fantastic DF setups in the forums here that snake over a nine-foot table, but I do not have that kind of room to have a lot of negative space on the table. Plus, from an architectural perspective, if you are trying to portray a temple or stronghold, it doesn't make sense for it to have a lot of negative space. So I need 2 x 1.5 floor tiles, and corridors with only a single side, a 3.25 x 3.25 floor piece to make interior rooms. I am already planning out some custom pieces to do that and maybe I will be able to post pictures some time.

But over all, I'd rather have just a bunch of room pieces. You can make your own pieces if you have those.

RINGING APPLAUSE!!! Way To Go, Gavynn!!

While I do NOT approve directly duplicating pieces that Stefan & Jeff & Co. (Oh, My!) produce, I HEARTILY agree that using DF parts AS A STARTING POINT to develop your own custom pieces is an EXCELLENT idea! I've built MM Dungeon floors as large as 10"x10" using LOTS of standard 2'x2' tiles, and I did a 6" Sci-Fi wall before Stefan said "Nuff of that! I'll make one of my own for him!", which I am VERY GLAD YOUD DID, Stefan. My version sucked! Wavy walls, non-aligned joints; I was ashamed to show it to anyone - except as inspiration.

Jeff, DON'T stop Stefan while he's doing the Cavern water and lake sets, but once he finishes those, then turn him loose on the Grand Staircase, the LARGE floor tiles, the LONG walls, and the Dead Ends for Den of Evil. Those four pieces will enhance DoE more than just about any structural accessory. The columns will be a great addition for the DoE Wicked Additions set; in fact, I suspect I just gave you the perfect set part count right there:

1 - DoE Grand Staircase
1 - 4" x 6" DoE Floor tile
1 - 6" x 6" DoE Floor tile
4 - 6" DoE Wall Section
4 - DoE Columns

I'd pay $50-$75 for that set, definitely. More than that, depending on HOW MUCH more.

Just my 2 cents worth, guys; Keep up the Good Work!

I agree about passages -- I rarely use them for EXACTLY that reason -- wasted table space. Once I realized, gradually, that I could use walls for the westerly wall of one room AND the eastern wall of another room, I could get ten rooms that shared walls instead of only 3 rooms that didn't, and with no wasted space between them. It was great. The narrow passages were PARTICULARLY great, since I could get two rooms with a corridor between them just out of the minimum number of pieces.

Passages are simply less useful for me -- they take up as much space as a room, but I can't fill them with furniture and treasure (or at least, not as often -- rooms are made to be filled with stuff, but passages mostly have to stay clear or it looks cluttered)

The cavernous passages are an exception, partly because they are SO well done, and partly because caverns don't NEED (or look good with) furniture etc.

But for DoE, I'd prefer less passages -- I'll be getting fewer DoE sets for this reason. I started with 1, I may get 2 more, but without the passages I could have easily picked up 5.

I hope that the DoE expansion includes NO passage pieces -- 4 corners, 2 T-intersections, and 1 X section is already PUH-LENTY!

I'd like a long, or perhaps 2-3 of the short passages with some variation to add to the set. I thing a LONG passage has many opportunities for trouble! Passages allow for ambushes, traps, different tactical situations, and neat designs.

Same with me. I got two DoE sets, and with the setup that I want to use for the next Hero Quest game I run (yes, I am old school) only uses one L corridor and one 2 x 2 corridor. The rest of the corridor pieces are just going to have to stay in the box.

The cavernous passages are an exception, partly because they are SO well done, and partly because caverns don't NEED (or look good with) furniture etc.
Exactly. I don't have any cavrenous passages yet (but plan on buying some now that I have seen DF quality up close with teh DoE) but I want lots of snaking passages for a natural underground setting. Built structures and natural vaces should be two totally different animals. Passages for caves, rooms for structures.

But for DoE, I'd prefer less passages -- I'll be getting fewer DoE sets for this reason. I started with 1, I may get 2 more, but without the passages I could have easily picked up 5.

Agreed!

Jeff & Stefan,

I gotta agree with Gavynn and L - DoE has enough corridor stuff in the Starter set (Room & Passage). What we need next, maybe even before the Wicked Additions, is a ROOM SET - and THAT could be just a re-package of floors, walls, and corners! Now THAT is economical product development, and could conceivably be released before February, IF you can get a container that fast! OR, it could be released along with everything else in February.

Tell ya what; YOU announce a Room Set, or a Deluxe Room Set, for DoE, for the February container(s), and I WILL pre-order! AT LEAST ONE, perobably TWO sets!

Can I get an 'AMEN' on that from the rest of the Forum?? If we get enough folks to go with it, Jeff can get the Chinese factory to ramp up production for him.
