Well, yes, RF, I was joking. My high school mascot was the panther. I was having a little fun since you said you were more of a splitter, so I picked out a distinction between senses and not referents (like between the morning star and the evening star -- they mean different things, though they pick out the same entity) as a playful way of highlighting the importance of noticing similarities as well as differences. I really wasn't interested in a tale about cats (red flag: yes another play on words) but I was interested in the taxonomy debate -- which, as has been pointed out, is way OT by this point. Ah well. I do likes my metaphysics. And I confess, I find it more interesting than biology -- I would have rather heard a philosophical response than a biological one.

Perhaps we should handle photos like this:

1) Have a section for photos, with each type getting it's own forum (Sci-Fi Photos, Cavern Photos, DOE Photos, Fantasy Photos, and Mixed Photos.) These forums would be for anything a poster could dream up, from dioramas to close-ups of figures using DF backdrops, people playing their favorite games with DF, etc.)

2) Have a separate section for setups, which will have some basic guidelines for the information posts should include, such as the application of the setup, the number and types of sets used, descriptions of key areas, scenery, top-down photos or map drawings, etc. The goal of this section would be to create environments that players could adapt or use outright in their RPG, wargame, etc.

And just to clarify, the goal of these forums is to be as inclusive as possible. Everyone is/will be welcome to post regardless of their skill level or involvement in their particular hobby.

I heartily support #1 & #2.
This will make our experience here much more positive and edifying.

As far as the after-comment, it is not skill I am complaining about in this thread nor am I trying to be excluding.
What I am talking about the massive amounts of outright or quite near duplication of many set-ups that have been placed into the forums with no reference that they are similar in any fashion or to any degree.
They cause the differing set-ups, unless they are outstanding ones, to be camouflaged or even lost in the minutiae many times.
That is what I am talking about.

Actually i was over at phpBB.com and something hit me, the DF boards need some style, right now they are just the most basic style there is.

Not sure if you can do multiple styles on the same forum, but man drop in some stlye.

If everything gets split, run something like BBTEch, Chrome, Digitech or Galaxian for the Sci-Fi pages.

Drop in Exposion_Dark, Glass2Red, SubBlack for DOE...

Maybe not those per say, or even if you can't break things up go with a DF style so when you get here, you know your at DF, give the boards some flare, right now it's just the boring SubSilver...

I Really like the Idea of Having the Photos better Organized, and it looks like the DF Staff pretty much have a Handle on that...

One thing Which may not have been Brought Up which I would like to see here is a "Locked" Forum With Updates From the DF Staff Which can not be Commented on by all of us Silly Albeit Kewl Chat Masters... It really would be Nice to See updates With out having to Sift through all of the Miscellany... (I Know that I am as much or more to Blame than Most, so this is not meant as an Accusation towards anyone)...

I Would also enjoy being able to see Greater Functionality in the Set Or at least Genre' specific Topic areas... Such as Separate Photo Areas for Each... (Not Necessarily by Skill Level)...

Further I Would Like to See an Area Moderated by DF, which was Dedicated to Holding Contests and the Like on Such themes as Set-ups, Full Adventures and Modified DF Pieces... These Could be Perhaps Voted on by the General DF Community...

I think a Photo area Dedicated to Photos Taken by DF Staff at Cons and Shows would be Pretty Kewl as Well...

:D APPLAUSE :D
My hat is off to MLV!

I love all of MLV's ideas, but especially the locked forum idea.
Too often, to really know what is going on, one must sift through oh ssooo much chaff to find the kernal of info!
Having announcements locked out from us lends to no sifting needed.
Fabulous idea MLV; I wish I had thought of it first.

Plus, I agree with his photo comments.
I do not believe the photo areas could be split up too much.
As it is the "Cool Photos" area is a monster that I simply "mark read" more often than not because there are times that there are so many threads to read and so many posts since I last logged in, that it feels like a tarbaby just waiting to suck me in for the least movement.
The monstrous size of it does not encourage information sharing which is what a forum is supposed to be all about.

Huzzah to MLV for his comments!
:D APPLAUSE :D

Additionally, I agree with GS that the DF forums could use some serious sprucing up decoratively.
They are rather plain and dingy compared to most forums out there.
Huzzah for GS too!

You are welcome!
You were right and deserved the acknowledgement.

Anyway, you hit the nail on the head this time as well: quick access.
The quicker forum members can get to the data they want, the specific discussion they want, and so forth, the better the forums will be for all.

It does not mean someone cannot explore the whole forum; one can, if one wants to invest that amount of time.

You know I had something to say.... But I forgot. I guess I'll go vacume the pool. Oh yeah!!!! I hope this has not been mentioned already and I missed it. I would like the SIZE of the photo to be limmeted, not the memory it takes up per say but the physical size. I don't have a 21" monitor and don't care for scrolling over to read a post that reformats to the pictures huge proprotions. I've done this my self you know but not on purpose.

Here, here, I agree with whitewind.
It is terribly annoying to have to scroll the message back and forth only because someone posted a huge pic!
Could you please put a pixel size on them like you do the avatars moderator?
Anyone with average graphic software can save things to a specific pixel size.

Excellent point whitewind!
Well worth the typed mental stumble you did for us.

WhiteWind,

Right there with you on the Scrolling... That having been Said/Typed, I have to say that some of those Pics are Pretty Kewl!... So I am a little Torn, but overall I think that the Board would be well served by implementing such restrictions... Good thought...
