The problem is not that DF made furnishings sets that did not sell well; the problem is that DF made the completely wrong furnishings sets!
The fantasy MM does not demonstrate the need for furnishings that both the SF and DOE MM does.
DF made a bad business decision and made the wrong furnishings set.
Let us have DF make the right sets (SF and DOE) and then let us show DF that furnishing sets for SF and DOE will actually sell well!

The Treasure & Magic Set, the Medieval Furniture Set and the Dungeon Accessories Set are in our Top Ten Unit Sales EVER.

We wish we could make every set we want...but we cannot. The good news? In 2006, you will see a lot of cool new sets!

It is great news that there will be a lot of new cool sets in 2006 Jeff.
That is, this is great news if they are SF MM or Cavern MM - maybe even if some are DOE furnishings; further releases of Fantasy MM or a great deal of DOE MM is not great news from my view.

As far as the Treasure & Magic Set, the Medieval Furniture Set and the Dungeon Accessories Set being great sellers, that must have been in parts of the world that I have not been in since those sets were released.
I have heard retailers in Maryland, Virginia, California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, North Dakota and South Dakota curse the fact they ever thought they could sell these sets and curse that DF ever made them.
For the retailers I have interacted with in these states most had just a few good sales at suggested retail price and then sales died and died hard.
These stores had to clearance most of the sets their distributors had convinced them to buy or use them as prizes in in-store gaming contests.
The latter is how I got my set of these three sets, but I, personally, was hoping to win StarGrunt minis from Ground Zero Games or Street Violence figures from The Foundry that were part of the prizes.

On the other hand Jeff, if you say that those sets were great sellers, why then have we not already had the SF furnishing sets that SF MM needs to sell like gangbusters?
The issue Jeff is not making sets that just a few folks want; the issue is for DF to make sets that encourage the sale of other sets in the same genre AND additional sales of the same sets in the same genre.
The SF furnishings and the DOE furnishings will do that in a way and quantity that the fantasy furnishings could never do Jeff!

i would like to say that i will buy any fantasy DF furnishings if they remain at the high level of crafting quality and they do not simply repeat what previous sets have done. a variety of similarly themed items would be greatly appreciated.

tapestries and other decorative pieces that fit into torch sconces would tickle me pink. i have fiddled about with a few things, but they are always too improperly balanced to look good.

as long as you make these products readily available to the canadian consumer(if speculation about shifting distribution away from stores and into online is accurate) i will follow you. you have my sword!

consider me tickled pink already, actually.

Well, I would like to have a good mix of

some traps / wicket additions and some tiles blending the new gothic look with the cave seets and / or dungeons set (as was done with the cavern-corridor conversion pieces)

furniture would be cool too, but i think you can get that *cough* from other manufactorers *cough* and there is plenty already out there.

cheers!

Beastman is right; there is plenty of fantasy furnishings that can be acquired from other manufacturers other than DF.
On the other hand, there are NOT a lot of manufacturers that produce SF furnishings.

The best looking SF furnishings are actually card ones, but they neither have the durability that items produced by DF have nor do they fit in exactly as far as the colour scheme of the SF MM so they can be an eyesore.
L's pics with their cardstock furnishings look good, but if we had DF SF MM purpose produced SF furnishings, those pics could look fabulous.
I honestly feel that sales of SF MM would rally take off if DF would show the necessary commtment to the line.

From my view that commitment would be shown in the production of SF layout pieces in the next two-to-three years that would match the pieces in the following fantasy sets:
Room & Passage, Wicked Additions I, Wicked Additions II, Advanced Builder, Narrow Passage and possibly a Trap set.
Furthermore, during that same period described above, DF needs to produce furnishings for the following rooms:
Sickbay/Medical, Science Labs, Operations/C3I, Engineering/PowerPlant, Armory, Security/Brig, Repair Bays, Cargo Bays, Offices/Meeting Rooms, Transportation Stations and personal facilities(kitchen/mess, quarters, lavs, etc.){officer & enlisted}.

Unlike many fantasy settings, SF gaming has the need for purpose in a setting, sometimes a very specific purpose for gaming in a place.
There are not many settings in SF that can just be called "just another dungeon."
Technology fosters location purpose and SF is rim-full with technology.

If DF can get a significant portion of all this done in the very near future, they will show the SF gaming community that they are truly serious about SF MM and that will foster highly increased full-price sales.

Hey rabidFox, your not sugesting that DF's commitment to the Fantasy line be diminished are you? I mean I know you don't like those near as much as the SF " Or the upcoming DOE ". But I must put in my vote to continue them. I do own SF terrain. Not to brag but just to say, I own 6 Starter, 2 Passage and 2 alpha sets. I want to see that line flurish but not at the cost of good fantasy stuff. DOE was a suprise " Gravey " to me if you will. Don't get me wrong Beta would be MOST welcome. I think I read this in one of your posts lonnng ago but explain again. I am right in saying that the sci fi sets were a luke warm sucess?

Too much Dwarven Forge to list!

First of all, the entire Terraform line at Armorcast is dead.
Additionally, it did not have any SF interiors terrain to really speak of.

Second, Ainsty has a nice line of SF interior terrain and is the only resin company to have a decent one.
Main problem - rising world petroleum costs - affects both production and postage(UK manufacturer).
Additional problem - Mike Brooks refuses to allow Ainsty products to be produced by an American manufacturer thereby continuing the inflating costs of Ainsty product to American customers.
Further additional problem - some of my fellow DF SF MM users paint like. . ., the quality level is best left undescribed. They will be challenged negatively to try to paint Ainsty terrain up to their own desires let alone a scheme that will integrate with the existing DF SF MM one.

Third, Figure Trader has no SF interior furnishings so I do not know why one would include it in such a list.
It also has the main problem that Ainsty has since it too is across the pond in the UK.

Fourth, Wargames Workshop has no SF interior furnishings as well so I do not even know why one would include it in such a list.
It also has the main problem that Ainsty has since this one too is across the pond in the UK.

I must have been completely unclear to have some folks to result in a list generated like this one.
One almost completely dead company that never really produced what I was talking about and two other UK companies that do not produce what I was talking about.

Folks, I am speaking of SF interior furnishings that can be used within the DF SF MM.
Is that clear as crystal now?

The only clear solution for this problem for the entire gambit of DF SF MM users is for DF to produce a line of furnishings for it.
The goal is clear; the commitment is not.

Diminish, no?
Currently expand - NO!
DF's fantasy MM is already a qualified success.
DF's resources now need to be routed into needed directions, such as making the Cavern MM and SF MM the success that fantasy already is.

Frankly, I cannot think of any piece that fantasy gamers really need for the Fantasy MM.
Granted, not does not even touch the wishlist fantasy gamers have for the DOE MM.
That list might even rival the SF MM list of wanted/needed product.

I think I read this in one of your posts lonnng ago but explain again. I am right in saying that the sci fi sets were a luke warm sucess?

From the sheer number of discount price sales that DF is doing, one could think that at best SF MM is selling how you describe it.
I have not hear any store owners of my acquaintance complain about the sellability of DF SF MM; what they complain about is DF underselling them with all of these special discount sales of SF MM.
From the talk I am getting from gamers around the country and a few in Canada, there are many holding judgement AND their money to see what DF will do with the SF MM.
If there are no furnishings made, most of these will stay with or acquire either their WorldWorks' First Light and/or Ebbles' Derelict II product instead of mixing them with DF SF MM.
There are a sizable minority in this group who are like me and using the paper furnishings inside the DF SF MM, but all of us would rather have DF-quality resin pieces inside instead.
Most of these gamers though are waiting to see if DF will finally come out with the furnishings necessary to make SF MM a completely viable product.
A lack of 2005 releases for the line is not a good sign for many of these gamers and a good number have lost patience and committed to card products, sometimes to the exclusion of DF product.

My concern in this area is that in 2006, DF will over hurry some SF MM product out and it will not be well sculpted and/or produced.
That would not be good either.

Well one piece I reall would like to see is a much larger curved corners " for Towers. Also additional passage options like a opening in the corner of a corner passage opening on the top of the T of a t passage and an opening in a 6" strait corridor. All would be nice. They could mirror those to SF and I would be happy. I think SF could use some of those additional building options. They have stated they are putting in some water caverns so at this I am pleased " even though I have not picked up the cavern and passage sets I want " I have to addmit I've bought NO furnishings from DF " unless you cound the staircase ". The reason for this is I have a HUGE amount of Fantacy Sean, grenadier, grendal and Ral Partha stuff. Much of the older things are still foating around on ebay. I ummm, just have to paint them....!! :?

Hate to be a buzzkill here, but is there ANY way to put this thread back on topic? This was meant to be a place to solicit opinions about what's next for DoE -- not a call for more Sci-fi, or a general critique of DF business practices.

I have loved absolutely everything DF has put out, and I've pretty much bought at least two of it all by this point. In some cases, WAY more. I would love to see more Sci-fi, more Fantasy furnishings, whatever.

But that isn't what this thread was for. This was just a place to suggest DoE expansions. I wonder if it even matters any more, but I'd kinda like to see it go back to that just because I'd like to see more suggestions. I think some of the ideas have been really fantastic, and I'd like to see more.

Here's one of mine, to reboot the discussion: introduce CLOTH!

That's right -- tapestries hung on walls, or curtains as portals -- can you imagine a cool DoE chamber with mysterious curtains at the NW and NE corners? Right in the middle, a spooky throne. But what's behind those crimson veils......?

If this thread is supposed to only be about DOE L, then why did Jeff not title it that?
"Time for Dwarven Forge to ask YOU" seems to be them asking us about what we want.
I have no DOE items I want, so I have informed them of what I DO want.
I am sorry you find that to be a problem here.
