Sci-Fi Beta Set release? 9 Years, 3 Months ago
So um...we Space Hulk, Traveller, SW RPG, 40k, and SW Minis players have had to create a hedge fund with all the moolah we've set aside to purchase Sci-Fi Beta.

It would be a lot easier to just GIVE the money to DF in exchange for really cool terrain. Less bureaucracy, less contention regarding the viability of the business models of our investment allocations, and we'd have really cool terrain to add to our sets.

Puhhhleeeaaazzzzzeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!

Any updates on when (if) future Sci-Fi sets will be released? Have there been any changes to the Beta list since it appeared in Games Trade Quarterly?

Singles, Accessories, Nukes (To be sure)?

The Beta is in limbo at this time. Sales of the Expansion Set have slowed, and we will re-evaluate the situation after Gen Con. We simply do not have the money to make all the sets we want...we have to prioritize.

Sorry...

Now where is that DF enthusiast that has a million or two to invest in a good company and product?
As provided us by Jeff's own keyboard, there is a great need!

I'm curious as to the comment about sales of the expansion set slowing. I just looked on the main page, and it's listed as the 4th best seller (with the other two sci-fi sets listed as 1 and 2). Is it simply a case that the best sellers list only represents online sales and is vastly different than overall sales? Or perhaps more that it has only picked up since the price dropped and isn't providing enough profit? I can understand if you can't answer the second one.

I'll admit I hadn't picked up any sets before the price cuts, but the cuts dropped the sets below my impulse-buy cutoff. I've since picked up two of the expansions (and 9 sets split between the other two sci-fi sets). Or well... at least I will when the second half shows up Tuesday. :)

I realize business decisions are made on the basis of more than anecdotal replies from individual customers, but I'd say this: good idea.
Beta was getting only lukewarm enthusiasm from die-hard fans like us, I don't think it would have been the best investment for the limited funds available.

I think the SF accessories most needed right now are furnishings, things to tailor the generic SF background into something more specific -- engine room, control room, brig, bridge, refinery, hangar, etc. That's what most of the SF gamers I talk to seem to want. The current sets allow for most basic backdrops we could want, but what's needed is something to tie the display to some specific setting. Beta wasn't a move in that direction, really.

I do hope to see a lot more for SF, but I also want to see how Den of Evil does. Seems like a lot is going on right now, I'm crossing my fingers and socking away cash!

Lukewarm?
Okay, let me fix that.
I WANT THIS SET DF, OKAY?!?
Granted, I want a lot more than just this Beta set (it would absolutely fabulous if we got clear to Omega as far as SF MM sets), but I want this one along with all the rest.

I think the SF accessories most needed right now are furnishings, things to tailor the generic SF background into something more specific -- engine room, control room, brig, bridge, refinery, hangar, etc. That's what most of the SF gamers I talk to seem to want. Now we are cooking with FUSION!!
Most who have been here a while know that I have been steadily campaigning for furnishings sets through both RF incarnations.
We NEED room specific furnishings for this genre otherwise SF MM will fade away.
What we do not need are show-specific furnishings; they must be generic Sci-Fi that can be used with show-specific games like Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica (the real one - not the late puff-ball), Star Trek, Blade Runner and all of that movie ilk along with gaming industry standards like BattleTech/BattleTroops/MechWarrior, Shadowrun, Vor, StarGrunt, Traveller, Alternity/Star Drive and many more.
We NEED SF furnishings, okay?

I do hope to see a lot more for SF, but I also want to see how Den of Evil does. Seems like a lot is going on right now, I'm crossing my fingers and socking away cash!

Good luck to all those who want DoE; I hope they get what they want.
I just want DF to get going with their SF and Cavern MM genre lines.

Heh heh heh --

To be more clear, I could have said this:

The only people eager for the Beta set are people eager for ANY new SF sets. Nobody seems to be particularly looking forward to this set as it is with the same "drool factor" other sets have generated.

When DF posts pics of upcoming product, there's usually 3 or 4 people posting "OMG I want!" posts. When Beta was shown, there was almost immediately criticism and expressions of disappointment. There WERE people talking about how great it was, of course. But I think most people would rather have had a different set of pieces.

If it had been long walls and furnishings, for example, people would be HORRIFIED to think it might not happen. Instead, there's more of a general "I hope SF continues" sense than a specific-to-Beta "That particular set I was really looking forward to!" reaction.

Hate to say it, but I was really expecting this. Not much we can say here if the sales are not up to snuff so to speak. Personally, our group has 22 fantasy sets to 6 Sci Fi. Though I was starting to warm up to the idea of wanting the Beta, if a choice has to be made I would prefer more fantasy sets.

You know I'm kinda onboard with L here.

I've got 20 Sci-Fi sets.

I don't mind dropping some moolah on something that I want.

However, even if Beta came out I might still just pick up just as many Beta sets as just buying more of the others.

I guess what I'm saying is the Beta set wasn't really a very well designed set. There was nothing there that really made me HAVE to have it. In fact the long hallways and such are just duplicate pieces of the smaller stuff that comes in the starter.

I guess I would have bought it, but I wouldn't have bought it at the same rate as Starter, Alpha, or Passage.

That's not to say that I wouldn't throw serious money at a new Sci-Fi set though.

DF I believe that Sci-Fi terrain will work, you just have to be careful not to try and cobble together a set that will be perceived as duplicate pieces that are just more convenient.

That being said I'll preorder for ANY sci-fi set as soon as I can.

Probably better that DF is playing it smart and killing BETA before beta could kill the Sci-Fi line.

Ah yes, but my group has about 16 Sci and only 4 Fantasy, and we just started, i Much prefer Sci-Fi, it's all where your gaming intrests lay. D&D/Fantasy is a much bigger market than Sci-fi, but us who like it would like things too, i would much rather see more Sci-fi than Fantasy, rather see it than Den of Evil/Dark World.

If a choice were to be made there is enough Fantasy by DF out there already, i would like to see more Sci-fi, there are three sets, if Beta had longer walls, i think people who have the SciFi would snap it up, or even make the plung, the biggest complaint around here is more floor space than walls to enclose. (and lack of tables, chairs etc).

But DF has a market in the Fantasy line, there is VERY little for Sci-fi they could carve out a place for it be the american version of Anisty, for so long that was the one of the few companies that made anything like the DF terrain for Sci-Fi Sure Armor cast made some stuff, but Tec Tunnels was all i found for Maze Master Quality Stuff, i nver bough any becuase of price and shipping, but i bought a bunch of DF's becuase it was finally on the market...

I think there is an opertunity here, but one of the things i see with the Current SWRPG is that people become leary and don't want to invest in something if the company producing it is intrested in keeping it up, could the luke warm response be repercusions from people thinking Sci-fi was a failed experiment and not wanting to get burned by investing time and money into a product that will no longer be made in six months?

I wonder if it is even posible to make an " Extreamly Limited " run. Say that 50 people need to be on a list to buy before the item is produced. Even if it is at a higer price maybe some here would be willing to fork it out. Don't worrie, if we win the lotto I am going to produce " Money anyway " some sets. LOL.....

I don't speak up on these forums often. I would love to see more SF stuff, and I WILL definately buy beta if/when it comes out. I buy it all. SF, Fantasy, and future Dark World.

I run Stargate Sg-1, and love the variety of fantasy, cavern, and sci-fi that the genre provides. I also run D&D. So I need fantasy, SF, cavern, and Dark World to run my games the way I like.

I agree I would love to see many more SF sets and SF accessories to make the backdops unique.

If there is a limited release of beta, sign me up. Still a lurker drooling. Yes us lurkers want to buy the product too.
