I'm of the opinion that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet (if you'll excuse the literary allusion). Dark World was a nice name, Den of Evil is cool as well, but I'm far more interested in the product.

The new pieces look amazing. I'll probably have to sweet talk my wife into allowing it, but I'm definitely getting two sets of this. I'd go three, but she'd probably lock me out of the house.

As for the "evilness" of the set, it does convey a darker, more foreboding look than "regular" Master Maze. That's as it is intended, and dang it, some dungeons SHOULD be more scary looking!

After all, what's the point of playing a champion of the light unless you've some villain of darkness to oppose? Heroes of legend need villains of legendary status, and as every fantasy fan knows, the bad guy needs cool digs to hang out while waiting for the arrival of the good guys.

If some people find it too "evil" in appearance, they don't have to buy it.

I know--let's paint pansies and bright rainbows on them. Tidy up a bit, you know? Why not add some smiley faces to them whilst we're cheering them up a bit?

Bring on the evil. Bring on the goats of Sata--err eh.. gargoyles. Give us your most spine-tingling horrors clawed up from the darkest recesses of your most feared nightmares. We'll just send in the barbarians and dwarven slayers. heh heh.

That's pretty much how I look at it. I wouldn't want my players storming a pink bedroom with fluffy stuffed animals, a hope chest, and cartoon-animal curtains in the windows.

Exactly whom would they be expected to kill in that scenario? I find the possibilities infinitely more chilling.

Nah, my players are gonna kill the things that live in the Den of Evil.

I believe he's talking about BADD (Bothered about Dungeons and Dragons) vice MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving). There was an obit several months back about the lady who got the ball rolling on BADD in of all places, the Dragon. She did quite well for herself running around running down a hobby she had little comprehension and zero apprication of. My tolerance for troglodytes that refuse to study the folks they are so ready, even eager at times, to consign to perdition wears thin at the best of times. To the issue of GDW, TSR's cease and desist lawsuit about the dangerous journeys line by Gygax under the GDW banner along with MTG hitting and sucking up the majority of the money in the hobby doomed GDW and several other worthy banners about that time had more impact than BADD's efforts. SPI is effectively gone, AH only exists as a sub banner of the very folks who sponsored it's killer, Victory Games also, Flying Buffalo is gone, Leading Edge is gone, Task Force is gone, but ADB limps along....you get the idea....

God bless,

Spencer

L--I think we're on to something... we could market the pre-packaged scenario to tweens & teens and call it, "Hope Springs Eternal" rofl

Oh there are so many places we could go with that title.

I love this!
The word pictures you two have created just give me a good laugh and lots of smiles.
Thank you.

They also bring to mind a stuffed/plush animal wargame my eldest son plays - Fuzzy Heroes.
It is filled with all sorts of smiles.
Sorry, I cannot remember who makes it right now.
Unfortunately, the scale is way too big to play in Master Maze.

I will let the whole Darkfather issue slide (after of course having deleted a long reply to him), but I just do not understand why he has to be so hateful.

Others like L and the "what color to paint his cool dragon" issue took me for what I am and had fun with it.
Others here like willypold who have worked in the industry may not have agreed with everything I have said, but have been able to carry on an intelligent dialogue even in opposition to my view.

Even here in the DOE thread some have acknowledged that some persons may be put off by the look and/or the name of this new genre, but have been able to disagree with me from their own view intelligibly and express why they like the DOE genre with Kradlo coming to mind quickly.

I am truly sorry that Darkfather and a few others have decided I am to be their scapegoat to feel better about whatever is bothering them and have dragged all the rest of you along for the ride, but that is how life is sometimes, yes?

Sorry folks, the anti-fantasy gaming group was really called MADD.
Whether or not they had permission from the other MADD to use the same acronym, I do not know.
What I do know is that they have been active since 1978.
I had that fact trumpetted in my face back in 1995 by a MADD person outside a gaming shoppe I was buying something at near a marine base in North Carolina.
Thereafter, I ran into several representatives of the group around the country, all using the acronym MADD.

I have also ran into other folks that had the same theme in several other parts of the country that had some other acronym or some other organization label.
I thank Tdaraa for supplying us the BADD group since he had expereince with that group; I think I may have read about them once.
The idea is that there have been more than a few people who are politically and religiously conservative that actively work against what gaming items they identify as "evil".
All I am saying here is that the DOE genre may paint a very bright target pattern on DF for these people to aim at and I do not like that.
I am just very concerned here, okay folks?

As far as some of the companies you mentioned Tdaraa, I heard some different stories from certain folks.
As far as GDW's demise, I did heard a different story at a con back in the 90s from Wiseman who was their Traveller coordinator.
Yes, the Gygax issue was a problem, but MADD came up specifically in the conversation.
Yes, MTG slowed the entire gaming industry, especially RPGs, but I have heard from other folks in the industry that its impact has been willfully overblown to puff up the importance of certain persons from WOTC so as to draw attention to their product.
With AH, yes, it was tired even in the early 90s because of the rising popularity of miniature wargaming; MTG just took more air from its sails.
I am surprised though by your inaccurate comment about AH, Tdaraa.
It was picked up and turned around by the very same company as WOTC - Hasbro.
The AH division of Hasbro is doing quite well these days especially with its Risk variations including the SW: Clone Wars game to name only one set of the games they are producing now.
I am surprised that GS did not catch you on that fact Tdaraa with how much of a Star Wars enthusiast he is.
As far as Flying Buffalo, I heard Mike Stackpole's ego was the main reason for that company's demise.
Anyway, yes, there are more factors than just MADD/BADD/etc. in the demise of several companies out there in the gaming industry.
I have noticed though, that in the past at GAMA, that there were formal discussion groups on how to deal with folks from the anti-gaming groups.
If that is going to be at more than one of the leading gaming industry meetings, then it must not be a negligable issue, yes?

Sorry for the turmoil, but I hope everyone is having a great day anyway!

So you are one of those, eh Whitewind.
Some of those most enthusiastic gamers I have met over the decades have been SFB players.
Outside of SFB, are you a Trekkie?

At least you are not a Tactica player; that game is way over the top.
Now, how much did that female elephant eat this morning with what point in her cycle is she with what is the road paved with, and so on and so forth.
Talk about being lost in the minutia.
I have seen one Tactica campaign/game that took 14 months to complete because of all the details.
Way too detailed for me!

The scenario I presented with regard to the end of GDW were given me in about 1996 by Mssrs, Miller, Chadwick, and Nielsen about a year after GDW rolled over. They can incidentally be corroberated independently if you like by going to the back issues of Challenge magazine and reading the editorials in issues 73 thru 77. In a nutshell, GDW was never particularly a financial giant, producing the Dangerous Journeys line used a fair chunck of thier liquid capital, TSR sued claiming theft of intelectual property, positing that Mr Gygax developed the concept while in TSR's employ. Getting the lawyers to defend themselves ate most of the remainder of GDW's reserve. During the course of the suit, they were not allowed to market the DJ line. They won the suit (or settlement, details are not forthcoming) as evidenced by the fact they were ultimatly allowed to market DJ, which was recieved with a rousing "Bleh" by GDW's customers. Making new product requires capital, which GDW was short on, sales require new product, which GDW was short on, then MTG hits, drying up potential sales when they did manage to retarget thier production on the main body of thier customer base, the Traveller / Twilight 2000 / Test of Arms / Harpoon / Air Superiority crowd, with almost a year between new products, and those in a trickle rather than a river, buyers voted with thier dollars, and a producer of fine product, joined the Dodo.

I actually like SFB, but to be frank it's gotten a bit complictated for me to enjoy playing anymore. I've long since forgotten where my Captain's edition is stored.

On AH, yes the banner lives, as an insipid reflection of what it used to be, as a hair on the mole of the beast that ate the company that ate it. AH used to have substance, the instruction manuals were almost history texts on the topic of the given game. Today they make pretty shiney maps with colorful lumps of plastic, that the mechanics of the rules have little or nothing to do with the historical realities of the capabilities of the units and equipment supposedly reflected.

TSR tried to placate BADD and the like by removing ikky devils and demons from v2 AD&D, thier customers had a fit. From that we got Baatzu and Tanarii, and ultimately Planescape. Never try to please folks who would rather see you out of business anyhow at the expense of those who actually buy your product.

Well I admit that SFB can be detailed but I've never played in a torny. I like Star Trek yes but can't seem to answer some of those quizes that I've seen. I hope to find a game that will let me use a greater number of ships with fewer rules. The most ships I ever ran in SFB were 4 and some fighters....A Hydran Task force cause I just can't say 4 ships is a fleet. I was up against a group on Andromadans, " you know , losely baced on the folks in the original sereis?"
