Agreed - each person has unique needs in regards to their space and storage requirements. DF seems to be working just fine to me the way it is with their current boxes, and switching to foam just seems to be a hassle and no better for anyone in terms of price, health and environmental concerns.

I am a research scientist (PhD in Molecular Biology) specialized in the fields of oncology, cell cycle and apoptosis. You should not be worried about DF`s styrofoam containers unless you eat the thing or infuse your hot coffee or tea into it. Taking a walk outside without sunscreen, eating fast food, flying frequently, smoking or sleeping in a basement which would test positive for radon is by far more likely to give you cancer.

Lot of responses; I appreciate all the feedback & will try to reply to everyone, albeit 1 at a time.

Note that the black foam will also decay over time and can leave stick black gunk on everything. The company I found uses a pretty high end material. From what I understand the owner's Army background got him into shipping stuff for the various armed services so their foam is a military grade material. I'm not worried at all about their stuff breaking down, although I will ask them some questions about it.

Custom storage cases and foam will be very expensive. Part of the appeal of the Dwarvenite line is the durability which allows for easier transport and storage.Dwarvenite is indeed an awesome addition to the DF family. But the sets I need to use for my various Con adventures aren't made of it.

A cheap solution would be stackable plastic storage boxes. Glue a layer of foam around the walls, floor and lid of the box and then fill with foam packing peanuts. This may not provide sufficient protection against hard knocks but would be cheap. It's definitely a clever DIY idea. But I'm not needing cheap, I'm needing the best solution. I'd much rather do it right the very first time & not worry about it again, you know?

I would contend that the Dwarvenite Kickstarter *is* the solution. There's not much need for foam if the product is indestructible. And for travelling, this is actually a better solution than awesome foam containers (since it requires less room).
Dwarventite is absolutely awesome, no doubt about it. I'm as excited as anyone about the stuff & think it's a great move by DF. However I still am going to need a solution for my existing older sets.

What's the minimum order for foam cases? Are there up-front costs or fees involved? Can DF provide the dimensions of the styrofoam packing without violating a contractual obligation with their Chinese producer/shipper? Can DF and the foam case producer create a generic case for any DF set, or would there need to be one case for each and every set? Did the conversation you set up end without a resolution, or is it ongoing, or was it suspended until a future date? These are all fair questions & I will try to find out the answers, if only to have a better understanding of how these sort of arrangements work.
jackattack wrote:
There are a lot of potential issues involved in creating official DF foam-padded cases, to which we don't know the answers, and which are frankly none of our business. DF may or may not revisit cases for transtorage at some point, but Stefan has posted very recently that DF is being extremely careful not to overextend. Which is a really good business decision.
Definitely. I will say though that while Stefan was initially very leery by the end of the discussions, he seemed pretty enthusiastic of the possibilities.

jackattack wrote:
But I think you are making this way too complicated. Measure the styrofoam. Conduct a web search for boxes with similar interior dimensions. Order boxes. Insert styrofoam. Fill interior gaps with thin foam or bubble wrap if necessary.
You'd think this would be easy, but again, I checked out a number of stores (Lowes, Home Depot, Linens & Things, Office Depot, Office Max, etc.) I ended up finding something online that I thought would work perfectly: just big enough to fit the sets with their styrofoam but small enough to easily carry/store. Basically, they'd just take the place of the cardboard boxes. So after carefully measuring the length/width/depth, I order 24 to replace everything. They show up a few days later & I go to put them in only to find out they won't work- turns out there are some plastic bumps by the corners. The boxes are currently sitting down in my basement, stacked together.

jackattack wrote:
Or, buy some bubble wrap and wrap every piece individually. Put them in whatever boxes you like.
Straightforward & simple, but given the number of pieces & sets it'd be impractical. It'd take an inordinate amount of time as opposed to just popping them in/out of their pre-cut slots.

jackattack wrote:
If you are dead set on foam, the vast majority of DF pieces conform to a few standard sizes. (Beware, passage pieces are wider than standard pieces.) Sort your sets, measure many fewer than you think you need to, and send away for foam. (Or buy some at the Container Store equivalent and cut it yourself.)
The standardization of the DF pieces is a good point. I'm just wary of making more mistakes with my measuring.

In a former life i was a photographer... most of the hard case manufacturers (pelican etc.) shipped the product with a foam insert that was pre scored in cubes, cut 80% of the way. You pooped out the cubes you needed to create your own custom case. My guess is these foam inserts are available by themselves if you want to create your own custom cases. A quick search reveals they are even available in custom sizes:

This is a strong possibility. Thank you for sharing.

Just thinking about it, it seems like custom cases would be prohibitively expensive and would only appeal to those who travel with their toys. That's fair. One of the aspects to this problem of mine is that the ability to travel is a 'must have.' Not just going to Gen Con, but down the block (well, a few miles) to my use them with my gaming buddies.

Many of you who have invested heavily in DF resin game enough and are serious enough about gaming to have a dedicated space. For those folks different storage ideas work better (like the awesome flat files discussed in another thread).
My group has a dedicated space (the wife of my friend donated their basement to the cause) but there's already enough geek stuff on the shelves, so I'd have to bring them back-forth.

For those of us who don't have a dedicated game room (my son leaves for college in 9 years... then his room is MINE!) Dwarvenite is the most practical solution. In 9 years I'm sure Stefan & Company will have come up with something new that is to Dwarvenite what Dwarvenite is to classic DF.

Mythic Party,

We looked into it, they seemed like fine products, I don't remember the details but we didn't pursue it any further...

I don't think there is anything keeping folks from ordering them on their own without them being official DF products right?
Stefan, I appreciate the update. While there indeed is nothing keeping DF owners from just ordering on their own, the issue goes back to being having the most accurate measurements as possible. I'd also love to have the DF logo on the foam that was protecting DF pieces.

What I'd like to do is find out some more information, then report back.

Next time order one box to see if it works, then order the rest. Saves huge amounts of money. And why didn't you return them when you found out they had unadvertised interior protrusions that made them inadequate for your purposes?

MythicParty wrote:

Either measure out the placement of the bumps, or press one of the blocks into the box until the bumps score the styrofoam.

Carefully cut (pick at?) the styrofoam to accommodate the bumps. Unless the bumps are 1/2" (?) or larger, they shouldn't impinge on the actual storage slots.

Place sets in boxes.

I COULD ship the foam guys each & every DF set, then have them digitally scan all the pieces properly.
Why not ship the styrofoam, and have them measure the slots?

I have to echo thanks to kite, I had not heard of those cases before! My father had extensive photography gear, some very high end stuff even including a lens that was nearly two feet long, but they had each come with a case made for it. Those cases you described are pretty cool for storing odd shaped objects if one doesn't wish to cut their own foam.

As to wanting the DF logo, perhaps once things calm a wee pinch the Forge Folk could look into allowing a few companies to produce some gear with a DF logo on it for a teensy licensing fee? Like DF gets a couple bucks for each thing sold maybe? That way it is on the other company to deal with all the logistics, costs, etc. Then we can get "official" DF merch if we want it. All the Forge Folk would need would be companies they approve of who want to license the logo to slap on things like dice bags, t-shirts, and cases!

I realize my idea may not be as simple as outlined, but it could be fun for Forge Fans and a small financial boost for DF. Heck, Stefan could even hold a logo design contest and either have people vote on, or he could select, the top few to license out along with the current one for variety.

My players rue the day I bought "Dragon Mountain". Ever since they give every creature a bit more respect. You never know when the GM will decide that this group is crafty...

Dwarven Forge bumper stickers!

Dwarven Forge window clings!

what about:

Dwarven Forge Tattoos!!!!

I'm thinking if we are willing to advertise Dwarven Forge on our bodies forever, that ought to be worth a discount of some sort ;)
