TOPIC: Updates on Restocking

Re:Updates on Restocking 1 Year, 2 Months ago
I think it would be cool to see maybe a waterfall piece that leads to a higher are. I tried to think about anything else but its like being asked something important and having all the ideas 10 seconds before that. But now i can't think of anything lol

Re:Updates on Restocking 1 Year, 2 Months ago
Seems like there are topics enough in Stefan's last couple of posts for two or three new threads.

-----

If I had a bunch of Cavern Sets, I would not be nearly as interested in "new and improved" versions of the same sets I already owned as I would be in a new cavern concept. I would be happy to buy an expansion/additions set with some new pieces -- including new straight wall and/or corner variants, and some new conversions -- but I wouldn't feel the need to buy updated or retooled analogues of sets I already own.

Since I don't own a bunch of Cavern Sets yet, it sounds like I need to decide whether to buy my wish list really quick in the next restock or hold off until the resculpted caverns are done.

------

Is that a firm date for a January kickstarter? I am usually a bit cash poor after the holidays, and I won't know what my tax return looks like until early March. Does January give you an advantage dealing with the supplier?

Please don't compete with yourselves by holding kickstarters too close together. This would be the second in less than a year, and it might cut into your website sales and skew the perception of demand for the existing (and, I hope, future) resin lines.

Or will the next kickstarter be resin lines? That would be a good way to measure demand/interest, and might allow you to order more efficiently if you go with lots of sets as add-ons.

-----

Stalactites (singles or clusters) on clear posts, with the bottom tips at standard wall height.

Coupled with one or more stalactites (singles or clusters) that have fallen. Standing where they penetrated the floor below. (I know that's not what would actually happen, but it would look cool.)

I for one would love to see the next kickstarter ending closer to the end of February or the beginning of March. Tax season will likely provide a pretty serious boost to the figures, but if it ends too far ahead of the checks coming through some won't be able to float the cost til they come in. I dearly want to see a great deal more success in Dwarven Forge's future.

I feel like there can be a place for both resin and dwarvenite. When I spoke with Stefan at the convention he mentioned that resin works well for producing limited scale runs, more like collector's pieces or items without enough demand to be cost effective in dwarvenite. As eager as I am to see resin continue, I can accept that how it is marketed and what is made in it may have to change for business reasons. I'm glad they value what we want and take our input seriously, but I definitely want to see them continue to succeed, preferably phenomenally.

My players rue the day I bought "Dragon Mountain". Ever since they give every creature a bit more respect. You never know when the GM will decide that this group is crafty...

Stefan, I am glad the next kickstarter is dwarvenite Caverns. I hope a transition piece is not standard in the main set. Because if you buy 5 sets then that is a bunch of wasted pieces. Maybe make that a free bonus for mutilple sets or have it in an accessory pack or a single purchase etc.

I liked the Ice Caverns, but really hated the transition pieces as I never planned to use any of them and since there were two in the set, that was six 4x4 pieces I did not need when buying 3 sets.

Anyway, I'm really glad Caverns is next. And the Sewers look incredible. The sewers might even rival Catacombs. I hope that someday you can figure out how to cast Catacombs in dwarvenite, even though you will likely have to scrap the electronics.

I have 2 cavern sets , 1 ice cavern and 1 set of passages.

I am interested in 5-10 sets of caverns dependingon the contents and addons.

I would like to see:

Hidden passages entrance
Wells/diecending portions
Special walls for ice/lava/water special effects (we can paint the to fit our needs)
Cavernous pond floor piece - again the water/fies/lava could be a painted effect

Rock stairs
Trap slide (for the players to slide down from above)
Stalactite wall from the rivver set to enable raised sections
Freestanding cavern walls
A rock /cavern alter

Large freestanding stalagmite sections - perhaps with a monster perch
A few special cavernous floors w arcane embelishments
A special cavernous wall w a bit of a monsters skeleton sticking out of it
A series of elemental walls/ steps/portals - water /ait/fire/earth patterns

A large treasure - multisection that could fit together

A really cool door or series of doors- dragon head/undead head/medusa snake head - something that could be themed for a cavern layout - perhaps dereived from the AB2 designs

Lichen peices thait could be attached to the walls to act as lluminous ight sources

Pieces that assist w muti-level designs

I hope these ideas help.

Be careful on those mechanical bulls! You a valued artist and critical to fulfilling my dwarven forge dreams...

I think two things need to happen before DF does another kickstarter.

1. They need to have the GameTiles from the first kickstarter available for sale on the website.

I'm almost sure this will take care of itself, since they probably had to order more sets than were pledged in order to fill up the shipping container(s?).

2. They need to restock as many of their resin lines as they can.

If DF does a kickstarter in January, that will mark a full year without any resin restock -- nothing since Catacombs was released, if memory serves.

There has already been a fair bit of feedback on this from new (would-be) customers who came to the website during and after the first kickstarter, who were shocked and disappointed almost everything is out of stock.

If the resin lines are going to be abandoned, or if DF is going to a kicksstarter-only business model, then they need to make the announcement and change the website accordingly. If not, they need to have the resin lines available for sale when a new boatload of customers come looking to spend thousands of dollars on DF products.

A general restock is what I would prefer. I am "in the middle" of fulfilling my wish list for classic MasterMaze dungeons, and I'd really like to have the chance to finish buying the sets I want (rather than try to unload discontinued sets and embark on a new series of purchases). I'd also like to be able to buy those sets over a couple-few years (rather than all at once, fearing that a 2013/2014 restock could be the last).

However, a resin kickstarter might be another option. The entry costs are admittedly kind of high, but it would allow DF to accurately gauge continuing demand for the MasterMaze and Cavern lines -- MM in the face of the competing GameTiles, and Caverns before introducing its own competing GameTiles. (And if the resin Caverns continue to sell, I think that supports my position that GameTile Caverns should be a new and different sculpt altogether.)

AGREED. I don't think any decision has been made, yet, to abandon the resin lines. I think the delay has been the result of: 1) nobody from DF having much time to deal with restocking since the KS has been such a huge endeavor, and 2) not being sure WHAT to re-order because they don't want to overcommit to things that won't sell, etc.
Plus, the water sets have been popular and people clearly want more, but they need time to work out how to do it without further QC problems, and they haven't had time. And these are just the wrinkles we KNOW about.

I think they need, as soon as time permits, to just get SOME kind of order in. If the water sets cause QC problems, they can wait. We know the Catacombs sets are in demand, they sold out in record time and people have been crying out for more. We know the basic cavern stuff would be popular, we know that the KS is going to bring people to the site and that stuff that maybe had slowed down a bit before the KS might still move pretty swiftly now. Get SOMETHING in. A little of everything to fill a container, and if you sell out again quickly, so be it. But get available stock!

After that, take time to breathe and work out a strategy before rushing to the next KS. There needs to be some decision -- and maybe resin sales after a restock and after the KS will provide some guidance -- about what to keep in stock, assuming DF doesn't abandon resin.

I really hope it doesn't. As I've said before, until I see how Dwarvenite handles itself over time, under humidity, in storage on top of itself, etc., I can't be sure it is a fitting replacement. As a fun supplement, sure. But I am not prepared to walk away from the product I fell in love with 14 years ago just yet...

Agreed.

I would be really disappointed to see the resin lines disappear.

I would be almost as disappointed to see another Kickstarter for Dwarven Forge with none of the resin lines in-stock when, as JA says, new customers come here looking to spend money on the diversity of products that Dwarven Forge usually offers. I cringe to think of how many of them might have turned to e-bay instead because there was so little in-stock during this last KS.

I am in general agreement with Jackattack, Law and Harneloot.

However I will just comment that I remember picking up on something Stefan / Jeff inferred sometime before the KS. That they had to go in quick with Game Tiles. I sense that what is happening with Game Tiles has had to happen to fend off another company stomping into DF territory with a 'Drastic Plastic' or some such product range.
(WotC as an example of a company who moved ito pre-painted figures several years ago with some success.)

All I can do is chip in with the rest of you and say that I hope when the Game Tile 'dust' settles that the financial growth can be used in part to bolster and support stock of all resin lines as well as new resin lines.
(Heck - maybe DF can expand!)

There also needs to be several new Resin to Game Tile transition pieces - But these should be available individually and not in sets. As per other posts, available in-set actually makes the sets a worse proposition for those of us that go into DF with multiple large set ups. What took place with Hellscape II seemed to keep everyone happy.

As I have about 20 sets of the various cavern related boxed sets, all in resin; the kickstarter would have to offer something different to tempt me in.

Assuming dwarvenite is less tricky (less warping problems?)to cast bigger pieces in, could you do some larger pieces Stefan? Look at what Games Workshop have been able to produce, size wise since re tooling into plastic.

2 by 6, 6 by 6 and 8 by 8 cavern floor pieces so we can make larger set ups more quickly and do more roof and '3D' set ups more easily.

Narrow cavernous passages (think D1 Module underground Troll warren)
Wider cavernous passages pieces to complement the existing cavernous passages range. This could represent 'watering hole' stop off points.

Mushroom forest pieces

Sinkholes

More stalagtites in various sizes, including some really big ones e.g. 4 by 4 and 6 by 6 sized cavern 'natural pillar' type pieces

Some LARGE natural stepped pieces that can provide cover and lair ambush points to put down in large caverns

A large, double or triple height crevasse with a rickety wooden bridge spanning it.

Some double and triple height floor pieces so we can build upwards (3D) more easily.

A large natural cave entrance with a secret sliding door that leads into an underdark transition (think Hobbits being kidnapped by the Goblins).

The kickstarter should be structured so that those who already have loads of basic floor, wall and corner pieces already can buy the other stuff that might be available.

Basically I am suggesting that the new material may allow you to "supersize" some pieces and make some REALLY cool large, set pieces, as well as the usual building block pieces that everyone wants.

Just some ideas.

Re:Updates on Restocking 1 Year, 2 Months ago
I'd thought I'd add the perspective of a newcomer to Dwarven Forge through the kickstarter. The sets I'd be most likely to pick up if the resin sets were restocked would be the cavern series, depending on whether the cavern tiles in the upcoming kickstarter were significantly different. I love the look of the original caverns, and if the Dwarvenite tiles didn't have the same water effect/amount of detail, I would seriously consider going with resin sets to cover that theme.

At some point I may look at getting some of the more exotic resin sets as well if they became available again, but for anything in the classic dungeon style (passages, narrow passages, ruins, advanced builder sets and wicked additions), I'd prefer to wait for Dwarvenite versions to match the Game Tiles I'll be getting. Getting some cavern tiles and filling out my basic dungeon tile toolbox are my first priority.

I really hope the resin caverns restock soon. I "need" about 15 assorted sets there (and catacombs) in order to launch the campaign I've been planning. Was doing some scratch building last night, using hellscape and Ice Caverns for stand ins (and realized I need even more ice caverns for the limited role they're playing, so ordered two more).
