TOPIC: Updates on Restocking

Re:Updates on Restocking 10 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Thanks for the thorough response Stefan. Every bean you spill is both helpful and interesting.

Since everyone is adding their wishlists here, I'll do the same. Hopefully it's useful to you. For context, I currently have no DF pieces, but I have a bunch of Dwarvenite coming in October. My list isn't an exhaustive "everything I want" list, it's a list of the things I want the most. An exhaustive list would look a lot like your general product list, and wouldn't be very helpful. Though it's probably worth noting that I would like to pick up some R&P sets at some point; they're just not a high priority right now.

So, here's the list:
2xRotA 1
2xRotA 2
1 of each DoE set
1 Woodlands Set
2xCavern Set
2xChasms
1xCavernous Passages

That's in order, but only from a collector view. If I look at this from a gaming view, caverns moves to the top. The problem is that I really want some of the LE sets, so buying them takes precedence. It would be really great if you could give us some idea of what's coming in the restock (when you know, of course). Knowing which LE sets are being restocked, and especially if this is the last restocking of some of them, would help me a whole lot with planning my hobby spending over the next 4-7 months. More beans Stefan, more beans!

On the subject of caverns, I remember you mentioning in another thread that a PVC cavern set would be a different style of cavern than the resin sets, and that the two would be compatible. If that is still the expectation, then restocking the resin sets seems like a good idea. I know I would buy a bunch (once I got the LE sets I want).

I would think that a cavern kickstarter would sell well over 3k sets honestly. Its something a ton of people are clamoring for.

In regards to wanting more resin i woudl think that anything that is as detailed as the catacombs and some of the other sets would definitely sell well still. Like another poster said the ideal situation would be to have a restock at the same time as the next kickstarter (i know hard to plan given the 4-7 months time span).

as far what i would order

I'd like to second Stefan's desire to see live play continue (as I'm sure most everyone here would agree) and I also see the possibility of virtual gaming becoming more and more prevelant. Let me say I'm talking about virtual tabletop here, not MMORPGs. I'm sure there is quite a few GMs and players (like me) that are separated from friends and fellow gaming friends and I live in a rural place so I can see virtual tabletop a plus for one aspect of gaming (ie. a virtual gaming night online). To that end I still see no real reason a webcam type system would not be possible along with a netmeeting type interface but it will probably end up being digital maps and tokens (such as maptools and other virtual tabletop applications).

That said, I still want tangible terrain. For the intent of this topic here's my contribution towards this thread...

I see Dwarvenite as being more towards Stefan's vision of flooding the world with 3D terrain and getting more people playing live RPGs instead of MMORPGs. Yet, I still see a collector's niche with casted limited editions of resin sets.

For Dwarvenite (specifically Kickstarters) I imagine it depends on how many unique pieces are needed with regards to whether a separate KS for caverns and passageways sets. I'm inclined to think that both could be combined into one Kickstarter with add-ons for supplemental pieces (like an add-on for caverns extras, stalagmites, mud pools, etc as well as maybe a few add-ons for water pieces?). I say this because I think Stefan has designed a passageway set with minimum number of pieces as well as the caverns set. Obviously many pieces already released need not be duplicated to crowdforge molds (doors, etc.) while certain other pieces would be almost required (like segway pieces that segway from cavern to passageway & vica versa). I believe advanced builders sets might be best for a seperate KS combined maybe with something like a ramparts set or village set ?

I'd like to see Caverns, Passageways (and water sets) (in that order if it couldn't be done together) with the obvious advantage of doing them together being growing the line twice as fast. Having 'basic building blocks' allows for virtually unlimited amounts of unique configurations without a preponderance of necessary molds.

And, along with many others I agree with spacing out the Kickstarter until the same time next year. The reason I think you will maximize on the Kickstarter is coordinating the timing around tax refund time. Obviously, the larger the crowd forge, the larger the savings to DF as well as each and every backer. The more advanced notice you give out to potential backers the greater I suspect the participation to be. I'm sure you can appreciate budgeting money and putting aside for something you want. I foresee twice the backing as opposed to most other times of the year.

Hopefully others will agree (IF they agree!???)

Speaking of virtual tabletops, if you haven't checked out Conclave (www.playconclave.com) I suggest you do. Its a great take on a browser based RPG (admittedily the RP is very minor and its mainly tactical. But I've been enjoying it a lot... was an early alpha tester, then beta, jumped on their successful KSer last year, and now they're about to have their public launch.

I am going 100% into Dwarvenite. It allows my kids to play with the pieces, period. I will definitely do my part to get you past 3000 sets of Caverns and Passageways.

How exactly, after spending triple my annual gaming budget on Game Tiles, is not entirely clear. I do know that I'm probably going to have to sell off my modest resin DF collection, but I'm okay with that. Like I said, I'm going 100% into Dwarvenite. Good golly Miss Molly, am I ever excited to get my Game Tiles in a few months...

I definitely agree that resin for awesome limiteds or just really cool sets is a good idea and game tiles for all the basics is also a good way to head. If the caverns in dwarvenite can't be as detailed there will likely still be a small market for some resin caverns, but I think most will go with dwarvenite unless the difference is truly glaring.

I also agree on trying to space the kickstarters. I would like to do them back to back and pledge for a mess, but my finances will not allow for that! If it happens near tax time and I know it is coming I will definitely set aside as much as I can get away with for it.

My players rue the day I bought "Dragon Mountain". Ever since they give every creature a bit more respect. You never know when the GM will decide that this group is crafty...

Over the next year I would be interested in buying the following if they are in stock. The problem is when I decide to pull the trigger on buying them, they are usually gone, and when they are in stock I don't have the funds until they are sold out again.

4x realm of the ancients I
4x realm of the ancients II
4-6x catacomb set I
4-6x catacomb set II
4-6x sewer set
3x-4x (ALL cavern sets/lakes/rivers)
12x ice cavern tall stalagmite
12x hellscape teleporter
2x den of evil room set
4x ALL wicked edition sets
4x fantasy floor sets (Id like to see the lava fountain on a hellscape base as an individual piece though)
4x (trap set, IF it returned)

With the increase in DF customer base after the KS I am very concerned that limited edition sets will sell out before I have a chance to collect them. Is there any chance that the LE print runs could be larger now for future sets? I understand being a collector, but its hard to be a player with these sets when they are sold out forever before you have the money to purchase.

I would also like to say that tax return time is perfect for a KS. I'll admit most of my tax return went to hellscape 2 though.

I share your worry about the interaction between increased customer base and existing/new limited edition runs running out before gamers get what they want (I think existing collectors will generally be ok).

I don't know if collectors would be happy if DF announced future limited edition sets as being "first run, limited edition with certificate" and later runs being "regular, no certificate". I suspect most collectors would still want "something" else special about the first run -- maybe some extra accent piece? I don't think the first run could have a different paint scheme since then pieces don't blend well. Different felt? now I'm just being silly.

The point to me is to find a way that a collectors edition can still retain/increase value, while also letting additional sets be made for games who "need" those sets for their gaming. I respect collectors, I probably am one, even though I game with my collections (not preserved perfectly). I don't respect speculators who grab up limited editions only to resell later.

Obviously DF shouldn't change the contract with the existing LE runs, but I think there's room for innovation in the future that could limit the "sold out forever" problem.

Re:Updates on Restocking 10 Months, 1 Week ago
DoE is/was brilliant (R&P, we barely knew ya). The accent sculptures everywhere add a dramatic, menacing beauty throughout. The Expansion set caught my eye first because: 1) it isn't sold out (in the aftermath of the KS -- which caused me to "discover" DF -- I was originally ignoring anything that wasn't available), and 2) the accent sculptures are _red_ (for extra menace). So DoE is my first love, although I am much more about the diabolic imagery (original R&P set, which I only recently found photos of) than the tentacle imagery (Room set) or the Hellscape terrain. For example, I dig the Hellscape stairway more because of the accent sculptures than the lava (although the lava _does_ work really well there).

Then I saw Catacombs for the first time (which I had never clicked through to, because it was out of stock), and I was speechless. Really. Words still fail me... So I realized that I had to click through to look at other out-of-stock sets.

I didn't appreciate caverns until I saw Cavernous Chasms (examples of set-ups). The ability to make use of negative space is a real breakthrough.

So now I am registered to be informed of re-stocks throughout the DoE, Catacombs, and Caverns lines. RotA doesn't do it for me (doesn't have the same menacing atmosphere as DoE), and I expect to use Dwarvenite (from the KS) for my routine rooms and passages "needs". Since I don't actually play at the moment, I am not yet able to appreciate the specialized pieces in the Advanced Builder sets, nor even the Wicked Additions sets (which include some nice pieces, but also have a fair amount of overlap with the Dwarvenite pieces).

My wish list (for re-stocks and for expansions / individual pieces):
Den of Evil (not so much the Hellscape or tentacles, though)
Catacombs
Caverns (all except icy, which seems rather niche-y)
portcullis, spiral stairs, and passage stairs (WA greatest hits)
more like DoE and Catacombs (man-made environments with immersive detail, especially serpent imagery like in the arch from WA #3)

After reading willmontgomery's wish list, I have to say that I'm plus one for more serpent temple/ruins terrain in future wicked edition sets. I'd like more slimey add ons and serpent add ons. I'd like to build a serpent temple overgrown with vines someday ;).

Well immediately following the Kickstarter I was fired up to get my first DF sets but there wasn't much on offer in the store so I got what I wanted sent over from Europe instead. (Loved the Catacombs and Caverns I got btw!)

I'm in this now for the long haul so I will be trying to purchase sets whenever they come back into stock and ultimately, I'd like to end up with every DF set that has ever been put out. Given the choice over Resin or Dwarvenite, provided that Dwarvenite is comparable in look and detail, Id go with Dwarvenite every time because its cheaper to have posted to Australia.

Basically Stefan, anything you put in the store I'll buy from now on but here are the things I'd pull the trigger on as soon as they are restocked:

-Cavern Lakes and Rivers (Seems most people are after these too)

-I need some passageways so unless the Kickstarter for those is going to be soon, I'll probably have to buy some of those to go with my Dungeon Tiles, So the passageways sets are good to restock

-Also I love the accent pieces that are found in the Wicked Additions sets and I want those to add variety to my Dungeon Tiles setups, so unless something similar will be in a Kickstarter soon, Id buy some Wicked Additions sets when restocked.

-I'd like a chance to get the limited edition stuff like DoE and Realm of Ancients etc. that due to only recently learning about DF through Kickstarter, I have missed out on. I could wait until they pop up on ebay but I'd rather give Stefan and Jeff my money. I'm sure there are other newbies in the same boat too.

Anyway, just my 2 cents worth...
