I received an order recently with a broken swinging log trap and was wondering how long it usually takes for the Dwarven Forge Crew to respond to questions/ concerns? This is the first fatality I’ve had when it come to pieces ordered through the site.

Ah the Swinging Spiked Log Trap. I truly learned to hate gravity with this one. I feel bad that I haven't taken the time to actually preemptively post about this issue. I believe I know *exactly* what you mean and, in reality, it isn't necessarily broken as so much as it is perhaps... flawed.

I refer you to this forum post from 5 years ago wherein Stefan let out a primal scream of frustration.

The chain's length (17 links on each side) is sufficient for it to comfortably sit in its designed groove. You can see this if you tilt the piece back.

Some say that they had better success when they added more links to the chain. I can't imagine how that would be of use. The problem is when gravity pulls down on the chains upon laying it flat. The groove that the log sits in simply isn't deep enough to prevent that tug from pulling it out of position.

The only way I have gotten it to work is as follows.

Start from an angled position so that the log sits comfortably in its groove.

With only the tip of your finger gently turn the log towards the archway so that the large link connected to the log is angled slightly. I suggest pushing on one of the spikes rather than the log itself. This will start pulling the log out of its groove but it is a necessity as it will eventually twist in that direction anyhow. Ideally, you want that large link angled in a manner that assures that the rest of the links will not need to turn the log anymore when they get pulled down.

Keep your finger very close to the log so that you can make minor corrections as you angle the piece flat.

It will end up looking like it is on the precipice of disaster. However, it at least stays up.

I apologize for the quality of the pictures. If anyone wants more a more detailed example, I can take a video of the process.

All things considered, I honestly think that this piece is one of my favorites. The fact that it even incorporates a pressure plate is absolutely hilarious!

I wish it was just the chain, but mine arrived in six pieces! It did give me a look into the engineering of the thing which is quite impressive. Jeff responded super fast and a new one is on the way. Dwarven Forge rocks!

I suppose that is what I get for assuming, huh. Regardless, I hope the information ends up being useful to someone. :)

The info on the log trap will be very useful (I don't think I'll be letting my 9 year old son near this piece). Would anyone be interested in some pictures of the inner working of this thing?
