Hello all,Awesome terrain kits.I'm getting ready to take the plunge and buy a dungeon -cavern setup.I'm willing to spend 400 to 500 $.Do any of the veteran builders have any suggestions as to what would be a good combo of kits to buy to do a decent Mage Knight setup? I have some kits picked out just wondering how to get the biggest bang for the buck.Thanx so much.Oh and when will that out of stock cavern chasm set be back for sale?

Hello and welcome to the DF boards!

I know this may sound crazy, but I think you will get the most bang for your buck if you focus on only 1 environment - caverns or dungeons. I'm sure others here will have a different opinion, but here is mine:

2 Room & Passage sets is a great start, but all the little extra's that make the set-up special (Fantasy Floor, Wicked Additions 1, 2 & now 3! and Ruins) as well as the versatility of the Advanced Builder sets would be great editions. For your budget (to just do dungeons) I would recommend:

1 Room and Passage
2 6" straight hallways (not included in the R&P set)
1 Room set (more walls and corners than R&P set)
1 Wicked Editions 1 (curved hallways & walls + large floors)
1 Wicked editions 2 (long walls VERY useful)

If you want to focus on Caverns (and are not interested in cavernous passages), then:

2 Cavern sets (you WILL need the corners, walls, and floor tiles!)
1 River & Walls set
3 extra cavern floor tiles

Now, I'm not familiar with the requirements for a Mage Knight game, so maybe you don't need as much as I've suggested, but I still think it best - given your stated budget, to focus on what environment and then branch out to another when (if) you make your next order.

Cheers!

I have to agree about focusing on one environment. I would go with:
1 wicked additions 2 set
2 room and passage sets
2 room sets
2 6 inch straight hallways

This combo can make a pretty good size dungeon. That's exactly what I started out with minus the 6 inch hallways.

DOE sets are all (supposedly) limited edition sets - once sold out, never to return....that said, MAYBE they haven't sold the total number of DOE Room sets allocated for the limited release and there will be more on the next slow boat from China, but I'm not hopeful....

There should be at least 200 of each Den of Evil set left, besides the
Room and passage set that is. I still need one more DOE Wicked edition to finish my DOE collection.

I agree with Harneloot's suggestions. Definately get a wicked
edition II set so you can make a super large room. It really
depends on what kind of setup you want to build though. I usually build
larger encounter rooms so I don't value passages as much as I once
did.

Thanx for the input.I can't resist the allure of the caverns, they just look so alive.I've decided to go with the dungeon accessories kit to give the caverns a lived in look.So I'm actually getting two cavern sets, one cavernous river and wall set, four cavern floor tiles.Another quick question should I go with odd or even number of floor tiles? Or does it matter ? I wouldn't want an extra floor tile I couldn't use if I used all the parts in these kits in one build.Thanx again to everyone for pointing me in the right direction.Truly amazing possibilities with these kits.I haven't even ordered any kits yet and I am addicted already. At first I was just looking for a way to display my collection,Like a glass case or something. But DF is way more awesome. This purchase will make my collection almost complete.hehe Mabey I'll even start playin some scenarios again. I gotta build a nice plexiglass cover for the cavern so it doesn't get dusty.

I know how you feel about the caverns sets.. I just cant get enough of this set. It is amazing .. that said you mentioned you want to use these for mage Knight. Are you aware that in inch grids are smaller then your Mage knight bases .. one figure will take up 4 squares of DF tile each. ?

I was going to say the same as DM-Ghost... I know well because I started buying DF for my Mage Knight games. The fantasy floors are ok for that, but caverns can be tricky, and don't get me started about Cavern Passages, that's not even close a grid. It can be fixed with a little imagination, but it's worth to keep that in mind. I played with the MK minis for a while but I ended sick of it, so cut off the base of the minis and put them in 1 inch regular bases... several hundred of MK minis... imagine so sick of it I was.

If you are going to use Mage Knight, better start with Dungeons, and Den of Evil ASAP (before it goes forever!).

Well I did purchase about 30 D and D figures and tried to play the game but I personally found it too hyperintensive.Game time is limited for me so I was lookin for a less advanced miniature game and came up with Mage knights and Heroscape.I like the rules of heroscape as they are the simplest gameplay and the Heroscape minis aren't half bad to look at either. And yes I know what ya mean about Mage Knights The bases are too darn big and ugly to look at as well.I guess I will have to give D and D another look as far as gameplay is concerned. Thanx again for the input .I value all your opinions and help greatly. Blessed love.

Hi friend, again that happened to me. I didn't want to play D&D and MK was just fast and furious, and easy to track the status of the minis thanks to the great (pun intended) base of the minis.

I can say that, if you cut off the bases BUT keep the clix ones, you can actually play MK keeping the clix aside of the terrain. But it can be a pain in the @ss to store all of them and keep an inventory.

Hope it helps!
