All I can say is that we here at Dwarven Forge sell a very small portion of Sci-Fi Sets compared to fantasy...perhaps even lower than 10%...so I think money talks stronger than polls...

Stefan said this and I have to ask, do the few sci-fi sets you have made actually represent 10% of the product you manufacture?
If they do not, then are you not selling only what you are producing?

As far as the DF WEB page shows, Sci-Fi is 5 sets out of 26.
That 26 does not include Master Maze sets that have been discontinued.
There are another 5-6 sets discontinued, right Stefan?
Let's say thre was only 4 for simplicity's sake.
Sci-Fi then represents only 16% of Dwarven Forge product - 5 out of 30.
Is Sci-Fi Master Maze actually selling then that poorly?
The math says no.

Money does talk louder than polls Stefan, but does Dwarven Forge visit enough cons that the people all have a chance to speak with their "pocketbooks"?
"Word of mouth" only travels so far.

Sorry, I forgot to address this.

Sorry Stefan, but I hate the whole look; no, the beds are okay.
Actually, everyone I have sci-fi gamed with since Gamma came out has hated the look.
None of us want anything to do with it!

We do not do Flash Gordon and/or Buck Rogers, and that set's design work screams Pulp Sci-Fi with a little Star Trekkie touches mixed in.
It does not even speak Star Wars, let alone BattleTech, Shadowrun, Babylon 5, Alien(s) or any other science fiction universe the folks I play with play.

The set Stefan, quite frankly, was a near total miss with science fiction gaming these days.
Genghis and a few others might be able to suspend disbelief enough for a game, but lots of our games are up for a week or so; these Sci-Fi accesories would gnaw at us until we replaced them and put them away.

Sorry Stefan.
We love your Caverns!
Sci-Fi through Beta is good.
So is the cut stone Fantasy motif.

Well, I guess this guy just doesn't grok that we're all nice here - nobody ever argues or gets on anyone's case, or does these long ridiculous posts where we refute other's points etc. I'm calling him Rabid Fox, since that was the last time I can remember anyone on these boards being this blatantly obnoxious. What does it matter if he is or not, the effect is the same.

thanks for the feedback about the look of the sci-fi sets, this is helpful to me, I can always use more input...could you send me a drawing or picture that more acurately represents the style or look that you and your gaming friends are in search of? Making future themes are hard because they are imagined and not copied...everyone has a different idea about what it might look like, in other words, we are all guessing...unless I am trying to copy a specific movie's look or such it's all just speculation right? In my case it was a mish-mash of various themes I liked...bad luck for me that my idea didn't fit with the popular visions of you and yours...what would you/they rather have seen? darker? Organic? White walls? please be specific, perhaps one of your friends can make a small sketch? That could be very helpful, perhaps one day, I might try a different sci-fi environment....

Law, posts like this is what I was talking about in my complaints.
If you do not fit in with the clique, then they are pooping on your parade like this.

I said nothing about Harneloot as a person, but he has to drop on me as a person since I do not bother to blindly agree with his folk, and I bother to take the time to express myself.
With this posting of his, one would think it is a great sin here to completely explain one's point of view.

And again this @#%#%&#% about RabidFox.
Are you guys saying the only person all of you ever disagreed with on these forums in the years they have existed is this RabidFox guy?
That sounds incredibly looney people.

Plus, what the heck does "grok" mean?
Terran Standard English please.

I am finally at UGH!!!!
I am not sure what exactly I am going to still do on these forums; expressing myself honestly seems to be out.

To "grok" is to understand someone else on an intuitive or empathetic level; ultimately, to such a degree that both parties influence, and are influenced by, each other. The term comes from Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land.

I did not know that about pre-war vs post-war architecture. Thank you for making that clearer.

Okay Stefan.
I will speak with the groups and see what we can come up with quickly before the Holidays start, and then give you more after the Holidays end.
We start the Holidays here with Halloween (Samhein) and end with Epiphany (the Twelth Day of Christmas).

Wow... this thread got ummmm.... interesting.

Not to jump in front of the train or anything, but I sort of agree with User7866 re the sci-fi sets. While the sets are cool, the style is definitely more circa 1950s (which btw is great for Pulp... the topic of this thread), however, I think many would love to see a more contemporary/grittier sci-fi environment.

Not to advertise a possible competitor, but I think World Works Games did a pretty good job of nailing this environment with their latest Titan series. The series has a dark future, space hulk feel.

Stefan if you are even considering a redo of the sci-fi set (and I am not even suggesting that is necessary) I would look to Cyberpunk and Shadowrun games and movies like BladeRunner for inspiration. Besides space ships, it would be great to see high tech corporate interiors (i.e. arcologies) and city street exteriors (highways, street lamps, futuristic cars etc).

That said, I am sure creating a line like this would be incredibly time consuming and expensive for both you and the customer. I also don't even think there is a big enough customer base to make something like this cost effective.

Personally I'm quite content with the fantasy line (and have been since the 90's) and should I ever have a need to go sci-fi, there plenty of paper based alternatives for me.

Your stuff rocks Jeff and Stefan! Keep it up.

Grokkit, is right that the current Sci-Fi Master Maze sets are great for Pulp Sci-Fi.
Our only problem here is that we are playing InterWar Pulp here which makes an urban environment a priority for us.

As far as paper Sci-Fi terrain, I prefer the less dark E-Z Future line from Fat Dragon Games.
"Gritty" and "dark" are not the adjectives we are looking for in our gaming here.
"Clean military efficiency" would be a better adjective for what we play here which can be achieved by getting rid of the "dirty" layers in the FDG E-Z Future set.
That would be the adjective that would be our desired start here for a new SF Master Maze.

We here are tired of paper terrain; that is why I was selected to come here.
We love the durability and ease of repair of Master Maze.
Paper terrain takes too many assets and then too much time and then too much care and then is too easily damaged/destroyed for us here to be thrilled with its continue use.
We here are realistic in that that is probably all we will have until who knows when, but it does not makes us any happier.

Thank you Stefan for your continued efforts.
We hope to see them bear fruit soon.

I think the problem with SciFi terrain is that everybody is looking for something else - as can be seen on the comments in this thread. Some want it dark and dirty, others more light and clean, some organic, or Spaceships, or urban environments etc etc - just look at the different looks on film - BladRunner, Aliens, 2001, StarTrek - all of those are SciFi, but they all look completly differently - could you imagine BladeRunner with Star Trek sets? Propably not...

The classic Dungeon Line is great as it really generic - it can be used for any Fantasy Setting. I have really no idea for a generic SciFi look that would be great for any setting as with the classic dungeon stuff.

I would apreciate some more modern stuff as well - concrete, bunker-like walls would be great for me as I am also interested in Weird War II and modern Zombie games, and for Skirmish/Tabletop games like Infinitiy or AT-43 that would be good as well.
