Spider Web Lair set? 5 Years ago
Hi all, I've been hesitating to post a (humbold) request like this given the fact that no one has worried much about something like it, and I know it's way much more specific than other of the lots lots of request from another users, but here I go:

I would sell my last tiny chunk of my corrupted soul if DF would made something for an Spider Web Lair environment. I think it's the last of the few environments I can't create already that really need their own strong themed look.

I love the other ideas for catacombs, sewers and so... but... well... I came finally with some ideas for the pieces and I would like to share and check if somebody agrees:

I think it could be done with a few little pieces... but I still can't figure out how to do it by myself and neither I have found no other manufacturer's product that satisfy me.

Here's a list of the pieces I think would do it:

- Human sized corpses wrapped in spider web. 2 or 3 would do it.

- Freestanding. Spider Web masses. 2X2 inches or even 1X1 would be enough, It could have spider eggs on it. 3 or 4 would be enough.

- "Columns" of spider webs. Of course, they would not be columns, but masses of spider webs between the ceiling and the floor, so the piece could be manufactured just like columns. There should be a good bunch of them, may be 4, or even 6.

- Vertical spider web. It should be capable of blocking a cavern passage or even a fantasy passage, so the high of the regular pieces and 2 inches wide would be enough. I think on set would need 2 of them.

- Horizontal pit with great spider web. Just like a pit 4X4 Inches, but cavern-like and with a scary creepy web. 1 Would be enough.

- Spider Web Wall: it would be like a regular straight wall cavern pieces but covered by web and perhaps with holes on it from where the normal sized (I mean, large monstrous normal sized) spiders could come out. 2 or 3 would do it.

Of course there could be a lot of other pieces, but i think something like this could be done in a set of the size of the Fantasy Floor set or the Chasm set, and would be enough to create a place where the pc's would think twice before entering.... and the players would need to scratch themselves while playing quite often ;-)

Thoughts?

Webs, you say? Fantastic idea!

Of the three bodies, I think that one should be "fresh" (possibly a live victim waiting to be drained), one should be a dessicated husk, and one should be hanging in a web column. Webbed bodies could be used as window dressing, or they might be the focus of the room (victims to be rescued, corpses to be identified or recovered, treasure to be carefully removed from bodies, etc.). A dead, curled up spider might also be cool.

Web columns definitely. Some skinny, 1" diameter, and some wide, 2" diameter.

Freestanding web walls with a 1" wide base and varying lengths would be very useful. A 2"x2" web wall can be used to block a door or passage. A 4" or 6" web wall can go along a stone wall, or stretch across a room. Multiple web walls can be used to surround a mini, simulating web or tangle spells.

A freestanding web cone could be cut vertically into two quarters and one half. The quarters could be tucked into corners (in any set except Caverns), and the half could go against a wall (in any set except Caverns), or all of the pieces could be put together to form the original cone (in any set, including Caverns).

I think the pit could be realized as a 4" diameter circular web that is placed flat on the floor tiles, sculpted and painted so that the outside rim is solid web and the spaces between the strands are dark to suggest empty space beneath. This would prevent the necessity of choosing a floor style to sculpt the web on/over.

All of these pieces should be freestanding, which means that they can go with just about any line, and they can be placed in and removed from a set-up without changing out actual room pieces. (Which becomes an issue if the spiders or spellcasters can create webs quickly, and when characters start hacking the webs down and throwing around fireballs.)

i like the idea of this being a basically accesory set and on the market there is no good solution
for this right now (even unpainted).

Very clever finding, i would take one, too.

A spider-lair accessory set- sounds cool to me! I recently posted about having a dungeon junk accessory set (rubble, piles of bones, etc) and one of the things I mentioned was spider webs. A whole set like this would be damn cool indeed.

Uti Long,
Your pieces are very nice and I wish Bombanat would still be making mods.

However, I would prefer web accessories that are NOT permanently part of ANY particular set. This way I could use it for DOE or Cavernous, or Fantasy setups without worrying about the mismatching floor piece.

Just my 2cents. :D

Yes, I agree. Those Bombanat customs are freakin' awesome though... just not very modular.
