Amazing stuff! & September restocking? 5 Years, 1 Month ago
I've been a GM for almost 7 years now. A few years back, while I was in college, a local game store had a few Dwarven Forge sets. This was before I had a decent job and all I could afford were a couple of the accessory sets. They made nice additions to my games but I always wanted more. I'd forgotten about DF over that time, until recently. When Gabe, from Peny-Arcade, gave DF a shout out I immediately came to the site. Now my wallet is constantly weeping, not to mention empty. I'd be surprised if DF didn't get a little surge of sales after that, and I'm really hoping they did. I only have the MBS so far, but my players are already astonished. I'm planning on buying a couple sets every paycheck.

So, my question revolves around all of the sets that say they will be restocked in September. I sent Jeff an e-mail, but I figured I'd post this all here too. Is there a more accurate timetable on those sets being restocked? Specifically I'm wondering about the Sci-Fi starter set. Basically none of the other Sci-Fi sets can be used well without it, when will it be back in? What about the Cavernous Rivers and the Cavern Lake sets?

Again, this is top notch stuff, and I can't wait to own more.

First Off welcome aboard. Jeff and crew are at Gen Con so I am not sure how long it will take him to respond. As for restock... DF has been fairly accurate in recent years about when items will restock. If it is not marked for restock in Sept. Hopefully it will be in the november order. We usually find that out just after the next stock date. I know this doesn't help but it is an answer.

Again Welcome to the Crack of Gaming.

Thanks. I didn't even realize that GenCon was going on right now.

I just really need a couple of those Sci-Fi Starters, most of the other sci-fi sets are of little use without them. If it says that the restock is in Sept. and that's accurate, I'm happy. The campaign I'm running right now could really use them. The Cavern sets are beautiful looking, and they're next on my list after the sci-fi sets, but I won't really need them until my next campaign.

This stuff really is the crack of tabletop gaming. It made me rethink a lot of miniature set ups and battle placements. I'm now getting stuff from TerranScapes for outdoor battles. I've never spent so much damn money. I'm just glad my wife is okay with it. She's my co-GM and as long as we can still eat and afford rent, she's all for getting these. :)

AnsuiEston,

Well welcome to the fray... And I agree it is really imnteresting how strategies can change in minis placement when one has 3D terrain to work with...Heh...

As to the Caverns, they may well be one of the most usefull and multi-tasking sets I have. Mainly, because they can be used with just about any other theme and most Gaming Genre'... Really good stuff.

I love the Sci-Fi a lot, but admittedly it is very specialized... Still fun to play with and have though!

Lastly, let's hear it for gaming sympathetic and outright proponant wives! I have had to slow down my purchasees of DF (after spending a whole lot) as family comes first, but my wife too fully supports my DF habit when we have the money.

Anyway, again, welcome.

maj!

Thank you both for the welcome.

I know the Sci-Fi sets aren't all that popular, for various reasons. But none of those reasons apply to me. I like to run games that are blends of science fiction and fantasy and those sets could be used in multiple campaigns. Also, I don't use any specific property or system, so the fact that they are generic looking actually works pretty well for me.

I love the cavern sets. I wanted to get them first, but the MBS called to me. I could always use something to make a tavern or a house. It's just the defacto standard RPG trope. Then I realized I actually need the SF sets, but the starter is out of stock.

I think my plan right now is to get the SF sets, the ones that are available then the starter. Then I'll get the RotA sets, then I'll go for a ton of the cavern sets. Those ones are just beautiful and I could see getting a lot of use out of them.

I wish I had more money.

I also wish DF made some modern sets too. That wold be nice.

I got pulled into this addiction by PA too- I'm awaiting my second shipment in as many months right now.

I'm sticking with the basic dungeon stuff until I feel like I have enough to flesh out an average to large encounter with some nice twists, turns, secret rooms, etc. Then I'll move on to the cavern and lake sets, which look amazing!

I've only run one D&D session using DF so far and my party was most impressed. My next session is next Friday and my best friend (the guy I started playing D&D with over 15 years ago) will be checking it out for the first time. I can't wait to see the look on his face. The pictures you see online just don't do this stuff justice- they really help pull you in and make your story/battle come to life.

Be sure to check out the free Tilesystem mapping program - makes creating the larger set-ups a lot easier!

Yeah, most of my players are fine with just using their imagination, but once you see the sets you almost wonder how you lived without them. We've used different things over the years, but nothing has even compared. My wife loves them and says that she always wished she had stuff like this when she was growing up. She wants to make up for years without it and buy everything and make dioramas, or geek doll houses.

The basic dungeon set is actually one of the last sets that I'm going to buy. My current campaign revolves around time travel and right now the party is in a high-tech level era that they should be in for some time. My next campaign is going to be experimental and twofold, involving a medieval fantasy setting, but also a crew on a starship. So, the SF sets are really important for me to get right now. I'm going to be buying everything they have, multiple sets, but I can only afford one or two sets a paycheck. So, it will be slow going.

That reminds me, Jeff responded to my email and said that the SF starter set would indeed be in stock for September.

BTW, I heard about the Tilesystem mapping program, but I couldn't find a reliable link to it. Could you point me in the right direction?

Here is the program:

members.cox.net/shawnriordan/tilesystem.htm

www.muinimula.de/Muini/de/2nd/tools/mastermaze/Tilesystem-3_x.html

Here are the complete drawings as of now:

www.colinburns.com/games/mastermaze/Drawings.zip

And here is the thread that talks about the program/picture files/etc:

www.dwarvenforge.com/dwarvenforums/viewtopic.php?id=1912&p=1

Beware that this thread has several broken links on the first few pages as the program has been updated by its creator, but later pages have the correct links - thats where I got all of the above links from.

Enjoy!

Thanks Harneloot!

I was checking it out last night, and it will be immensely helpful. I can't believe someone did all that work and just handed it out to the community. I can understand it, but it is unbelievable. Thanks again.
