Two shipping notices - again 5 Years, 8 Months ago
Hi Jeff

Seems after 2 1/2 years it has happened again. See also the following thread summer 2006:

www.dwarvenforge.com/dwarvenforums/viewtopic.php?id=1330

My order was 3 Rota Sets (plus free stuff) and I would have expected this would fit into one of the great new DF boxes which had been bought in 2 years ago by DF. Just to clarify - this never was a DF issue - it was the shipment center !!

What is the issue with multiple shipments (for international orders):

Possibility that customs gets it wrong / added hassle, paperwork for customers

Possibility for added charges. In the UK you pay a flat fee for each package of 13.50 pounds (approx. 20+ dollars). These are wasted if the whole lot could have fit in a single box

DF also gets screwed. Shipment cost is based on weight. You pay A LOT for the first pound - and then it slowly increases. If a shipment is split into two packages, then this flat fee is payed twice. It isn't the customer who pays it - so either the shipping company takes a hit (unlikely) or they invoice DF more then they should if they would not have split the shipment.

I thought I bring this to the attention of Jeff. Might be worthwhile following up again. I will update here once the packages arrive.

greetings

The issue is true for all the British commonweath countries, like Canada and Australia. The thing with Express Mail International to these countries and some others is the box size limit of 79" length plus girth (L+2x(W+H)). The 79" limit is reached with 2 boxes of size of the MM-001 or MM-034. The free items would not fit beside the MM-034's in the box. So we had to use 2 boxes. Countries like Germany and France are different than the commonwealth as they have a size of 108" for Express. We used one box on the French, German, Scadanavian, Low Countries, Japanese, and Austrian orders among others, but we had to use two boxes to the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia because of the different size limits. This was true on only the orders with 3 MM-034's and both free items. The ones with two MM-034's with free items met the size limits.

If the free pieces had been a little smaller they could have slid beside the MM-034 boxes like the MM-012 and -013 do and I could have used one box (the MM-029 does not fit beside most of the long boxes). There will always be geometry issues that could only be solved with a specific box. This leads to cost and storage issues.

We try to use as few boxes as we can. It saves everyone. Unfortunately, our shipping software is not fancy enough to deal with size issues, so sometimes we actually lose some money on shipping to certain countries.

Here is the link to the mail regulations for the United Kindgom. Each country has there own rules.

pe.usps.com/text/Imm/fh_014.htm#ep3576772

We cannot send two MM-002, MM-015, MM-020, or MM-023's in a single box to the commonwealth countries either as they are too large. Our standard large box that is just under the max size limit for USA UPS ground shipping is ~83" length plus girth (just under 3 cubic feet). We can fit 4 short or 2 tall boxes in it. We have to be able to cut it down by 2" to make it legal for the UK commonwealth countries so we can only get 3 short or 1 tall with 1 short box for those countries.

We have seen the most emails about this from the United Kingdom because they get a per package extra charge from the private firm (Parceforce) that handles packaged mail as opposed to the Royal Mail that does letters.

So...in short...the situation is not all that great but we are making the best of it that we can. The size of our set boxes are really set up for USA UPS shipping and not International shipping. Thanks for sticking with us and supporting us even though the shipping situation is not good.

Wow, this is more confusing than the Metric vs. Imperial measurements debate (that amongst other things caused problems with the Hubble telescope) or the A4 vs. Letter sized page size (which sometimes causes headaches when I try and print pdf's) or your strange American spelling. The British may see both of us as colonials with strange accents, but at least we spell things properly ;)

Fortunately for us in Australia the number of boxes does not really matter as long as the total value of the goods (not including postage) is less than A$1000. And despite our falling dollar pushing orders dangerously close to that mark than at the time of making the order I think I should be safe, but who knows with the currency markets.

Thanks Jeff for the detailed analysis of postage, I guess it is too much to expect the postal services to be able to standardise worldwide. I believe standardisation has been done with shipping container, but I guess only the big boys get to benefit from a common standard.

Jeff

Thanks a lot !!! Information like this helps if people ask questions - Why. I don't have the packages yet - so couldn't tell if they needed to be in 2 boxes. I just assumed from the weight / cost for shipping that it would fit in a single box - as I had pricier shipments (by shipping cost) in a single one in the past. And last time when it happened it was a clear issue with the shipper saving by reusing some packaging.

Just a big thank-you for the really detailled post. It is very appreciated. The whole international shipping is as it is.

If the 'freebees' are the only ones in an extra box, there might be still hope to avoid any charges at all. But I don't hold my breath.
