I'm from Canada and my budget for my first DF "expenditure" will be around 500$ INCLUDING SHIPPING (125$). After that, I'd buy 2 sets a year.

YEAR 1: Is 3 ROTA sets a good starting point? The "free stuff" coming with the preorder looks sweet and additional stuff is always useful when you start.
Should I instead take 1 DEN OF EVIL + 2 ROTA?

YEAR 2: I'd buy the ROOM AND PASSAGE SET (it is not in stock now) and the ADVANCED BUILDER SET.

YEAR 3: Den of EVil or ROTA (depending on choices made on year 1) + Wicked addition.

Let's stop there. Should I modify my plan?

My opinions, free of charge and worth considerably less...

If you want three RotA (I) sets, buy them now. Not only do you get the discount, but you get one of each freebie -- the colored intersection only comes if you order three.

If you want DoE (I), you want to get it sooner than later -- I believe they are down to their last sets, so I don't think you want to wait too long to pick that up.

Welcome to the boards.

I have to agree:

Get the 3 ROTA and get all the goodies. Stefan & Jeff have held true to not ever releasing the Pre-Order bonus stuff for general sale, so unless you get that beautiful mosaic now, you won't ever get one! Plus, this will provide you with more flexibility to build different/larger set ups right away.

Year 2 I'd go DOE & DOE WA, simply because they are limited release, and having both will again provide greater flexibility in building.

Year 3 I'd go Regular R&P + Regular Room. You'll need those corners!

But really, you'll be happy with anything you buy - its AWESOME stuff!

10-4, I'll go with 3 ROTA sets - as soon as I can get that past the "treasurer" (you know, the girlfriend)...

Should be easy.

It's my 30th birthday gift to myself after all!

Welcome to the boards Drawback. If money is tight for you and you've got a friend/relative in the US who you visit semi-regularly I suggest you ship your order to them, b/c you'll save an arm and a leg in the shipping costs. This is what I do with a friend in WA and it's probably saved me $500 over the last couple years. Plus if you're visiting for a couple days you can avoid the customs too.

"girlfiend"....no, no, no....that's not a treasurer, wife, yes....girlfriend it's 'carte blanche'! Anyway, I agree with everyone, go for 3 of the ROA, the bonus items are always worth getting an extra set. You'll be happy with everything you get though.

Good news folks, I've "upgraded" my budget!

3 ROTA
2 6'' long passages (there doesn't seem to be a lot of corridors in the ROTAs.

+ ONE MORE SET! Should I get the advanced builder set, the room set or one Den of EVIL? I just don't know... I think the ROOM SET is the better option. Thoughts?

HUZZAH!!!

I say room set to match the 6" corridors (same style).

If you're thinking about the Den of Evil (only the big, main set is in stock right now) then maybe a normal Fantasy Room & Passage set (its even a bit cheaper!) instead so you have some L, T & 4-way passages to go with your 6" passages, plus you'll get rooms pieces as well!

Edit:

Oops! Never mind - the regular R&P set is currently out of stock......Room set then!

I've always been of the mind to snag Limited Edition sets while they are available. If you plan not to yield to temptation and blow the annual DF budget, there's a good chance that the Den of Evil Sets will be gone for good by the time the next year rolls around.

That being said, consider how you game and how you plan to use the sets. Do your dungeons build in intensity until you reach the "Big Boss" at the end. Will you need the dramatic setting (DOE) to go along with the dramatic final battle? If that's not a concern, by all means, stick with the basics. You can never go wrong with them and you can always embellish them with other accessories to make that dramatic end game.

Whatever you decide, welcome and have fun !!!

I'll post pictures of my first game using the sets. I'll try to get pictures of the players faces as they spot the DF pieces when enter the "gaming" room (the kitchen).

drawback;

If you KNOW you will want the DoE set(s), GRAB THEM NOW! Once they are gone, it will be E-Bay or NOTHING!! if you're not sure you want them, then okay, shine 'em on and go for the basic sets along with the RotA sets.

My problem now is that I haven't used MY stuff in 3 years, I've kinda gotten out of gaming, but I DON'T WANT TO LET GO OF MY STUFF!! I did it once before with BattleTech, then wanted to get back into it and blew major bucks - and haven't USED IT since! SWMBO just might stomp me into snail snot if I do that again! And with @30 White boxes, plus LOTS of little boxes of individual stuff, well, Shadox might come back East to pick it all up if I offered him even HALF of a deal! Or for that matter, jackattack would SWARM North! It would be Lee headed for Gettysburg all over again! Because I still keep buying DF!

(that reminds me, I have to get my order in today or tomorrow for RotA - thanks, drawback!)
