My worry, to be honest, is that this is NOT an Egypt set. "Realm of the Ancients" has a decidedly Lovecraft air to it, too... of course, DoE having been made already, it would seem superfluous to do another like that. I'd also feel bad for DF -- all these people getting excited for something they DIDN'T do...

But I really would love an Egypt set. Not only for Indy --yay! -- but because it really is one of the classic adventure settings, and we don't have one yet. Plus, after seeing what Bruce has done over at Hirst Arts, we know this is a setting that can be expanded and expanded and expanded. There are just so many types of things to be done with it... I'm sure DF could get at least three or four really cool sets out of an Egypt setting.

This year has definitely felt like downtime for DF, which is fine after so MANY things came out in years past... but if the year ends with some cool Egypt stuff, that will definitely make 2008 a memorable DF year...

I hear you on this L, and it begs the question of which is better/worse: to not drop any hints and then people start to grumble and get impatient or to drop hints and have people's imagination paint a picture of the set that is far off the mark so people are disappointed when it comes out.

However - when was the last time DF made ANYTHING disappointing?

Now, if we could get a set of Lovecraftian Sewers, set on Alderaan underneath an ancient Egyptian Temple and guarded by Jungle Men, we'd be all set!

Personally, I'm hoping for a catacombs/crypts type of environment that can be a stand-alone or easily tie into the existing dungeons line. DF only minimally (and wonderfully) touched on the crypt idea with the sarcophagus in the Floors Set and I'd love to see more of that detail. I'm partial to undead hordes and Gothic Horror :o

Then again, Egyptos would be cool ...
Then again, Sewers would be cool ...
Then again, Aztec would be cool ...

Then again, a winning lottery ticket would be cool :D

Real of the Ancients sounds like a generic ancient civilization ruin set, something that could be used for Mesoamerican, Egyptian, Sumerian or Ancient Greek settings...or for Atlantean, Stygian, Hyperborean or Martian ruins as well.

Also, didn't Stefan say something about trying to recreate the look of the Conan the Barbarian movie in an old post?

I may be biased however, as I am a classic swords & sorcery maniac, and my efforts with hirst blocks were in the same vein.

Egypt would be fine for me. After over a year in the works I did finish my HA pyramid.
Only need some painting now.
So while it looks impressive with ten by ten inch size and twelve inch high, gaming is limited to the chamber in the middle right now.

On the other hand - I guess anything will be fine with me what comes from DF.

There are some Egyptian Elements to the Ancient's Set. However, it has not been designed exclusively as an Egyptian setting....that being said, it could easily be used as one simply by placing certain Egyptian elements within it, some of which, we may even do as a sort of booster set providing this one is successful of course...

Originally, I really wanted to do an Egyptian Setting...but after much discussion, Jeff convinced me that as kool as it is, it might be a little too limiting...I eventually came to realize that his idea of an "Ancient's" set rather than an "Egyptian's" would be far more usable from a gameplaying point of view.....I can't speak for everyone, but in my own campaign I have ancient ruins scattered here and there to be discovered and explored by our characters...they are not Egyptian ruins but rather ancient cultures that embody well, all the one's that I might envision/fantasize about having read or saw them in various periods of our own various civilizations....

Perhaps, many of you out there have also created some sort of mythical ancient culture within your game setting...which culture is it we don't know...only you know. Hopefully, this set can be adopted by you and used as whatever personal 'ancient" culture you want it to represent.

We have created a set very different in feel than an underground labyrinth. It is like a blank Papyrus or Vellum scroll waiting for your imagination and creativity to flesh it out.

Blairgb is the soothsayer on this one.

Hope your minds will be as excited as mine...

Great - can't wait to check it out!

I am ESPECIALLY excited about the little hint about possible "booster" accessory sets!!!

That sounds great. I think it was wise to avoid doing an Egypt-only set. It's a fun environment, but I do think it would be way too limiting for DF. It doesn't lend itself to too many fantasy settings, since it's so particular to one non-fantasy environment. And even for people who DO want to do an Egyptian theme, it doesn't lend itself to as much variety as a backdrop -- however often you want to play an Egypt theme, it can't get as much use as basic DF dungeons or caverns, which work no matter WHAT you want to play (practically)

No, a more general "ancients" theme is a lot cooler -- I'd love to see some Aztec elements (also great for Indy, and of course things like Lizardmen and Snakemen) and some Greek/Roman... fantastic.

Anyhoo, I'm really looking forward to this set...
