We should approach this in a spirit of fun - no lawyers allowed!!
OW -

You and I have disagreed about stuff in the past, but NOT THIS TIME!!!

Shakespeare was RIGHT - IF you differentiate lawyers and attorneys.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I edited the first post after reading some of your posts. I will post the contest early next week!

This should be a lot of fun. The prizes won't be huge -- it is more for bragging rights. Big prizes tend to take the fun out of things. I hope to make the prizes stuff like pre-production sets and other things that the DF faithful will enjoy. I think the first prize will be the pre-production Tavern Accessories Set I just received.

Nice!

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's pictures. I don't own a camera...guess that would take money away from my DF funding *laughs*

It will be exciting just to watch this one though from the cheap seats though -- you guys are so creative with your layouts!

This will be a massive equalizer, something that i think is not a bad thing.

While i have to kind of blush and laugh at myself for lupus' coments. It was part of the same thing i came to a conclusion on IO's layouts. That some of what it was that make them so Cool are the extra stuff, the various accumulation of Accessories that made the layouts pop so much was all the Stuff that was in it.
It is a level i am still trying to achieve in my own head, with add on bits, and i still don't think i am at the IO level, but to be included in the company of L and IO with set ups i have to blush. Cause i don't think i am there, there are still so many more accesories i want to get for Sci Fi and D&D for that mater. But i just love me SW so much i tend to spend on it first.

lupus don't be ashamed, post away i don't feal my work is all that good at times, but i just like it, if you got a layout it will provide insperiation to others, i know L, Tom, Dante, IO and soooo many others make me want to do more things, not always bigger things but they give me ideas of what can be done so post your pics. Even if you think they aren't good, we all can't have the resources to stuff and seeing what other people work with gives us ideas. I think that will be a good out come of this contest.

But limiting it to DF only means we are all on the same playing field for what can do and nix's the i have X amount of accesories i made or bought...

lets start the Rumble II

Ohhhhh perhaps the name of the Contests.

XX Rumble.

Like this is the DoE Three set Rumble.
then we'll get the MBS Rumble next...

I definitely think it would be a good idea to limit the contest to 3 sets or less to help get newbies hooked. With all of the large collections on the forums and in many of the promo pics it can be a bit daunting to new buyers. Especially those of us on a tight budget. Coming up with creative ways to stretch one's dollar is great.

A category where we would be allowed to add some homemade, other company, or Hirst Art would be great.

Like roof for medieval building, or street cobblestone. etc...

As long as the majority of components where from DF.

Sounds like a good excuse I can use on the wife to let me get the sets for the specific contest that I lack. Cool. I like the idea of the level playing field and would like the multiple winner approach also for best this ,,, that and the other thing.

Sounds great. Looking forward to it.

Playing Devil's Advocate:

I've not read through entire posts here, but from what I did read, at least two individuals voiced their concerns that the contest be fair and not allow for things that some of the DF users could not afford, such as fog affects.
That sounds great - at first.

Then I had to ask myself questions like:
If we are worried about what DF users can afford in order to make this a level playing field....
what about image quality? Will the person who can afford a camera with a $2000 lens take a better picture than the person who can only afford a disposable camera?
What about having film developed? What if one film technician or equipment sucks while another is a master at what they do?
will the average DF user have 3 DoE sets?

In other words, there are many things outside DF control. I doubt DF wants to go so far as to limit the type of camera we can use, even if that is more fair.

Okay, just playing devil's advocate. I'm really all for the contest and how the rules are currently set up.

62 sets and counting. In addition, a boatload of individual pieces or sets of pieces.

I agree that there's only so much fairness we can expect, but there are some basic groundrules that seem unavoidable:

1. You must own some DF.
2. You must own, or have access to, a computer.
3. You must own, or have access to, a camera.

:)

My camera is nice, but not all that special, and certainly on the low end of digital cameras. And it's old, by today's standards. So if I can turn out decent pics, I would expect most people can.

The fog and lights rule makes a lot of sense to me, since comparatively few people have access to such gimmicks. And while I initially resisted the DF-minis-only rule -- after all, that limits us a LOT, since how many setups make sense with only orcs, skeletons and lizardmen? Who's gonna eat at the tavern, exactly? -- it does make sense since it levels the playing field regarding paint skills. It'd be a shame if someone won because people were impressed by the well-painted minis on display.

I like the idea of having around 5 categories or so, trying to reach as broad a range of customers as possible. Some people will have 3 DoE sets, and others will have all the SF sets, and others will have all the cavern sets, and others will have 1 set from each, etc. Each category could play to a certain type of approach. Then maybe 1 category would be for the diehards -- "Make the biggest layout you can" -- and 1 category could be for the newbies -- "Use only 1 set, but use every piece in it."

I really liked the challenges I posted above -- you have to use every piece in the set, but you can't use any of them in a 'non-conventional way' (no turning pieces on their sides, or using narrow passage pieces as anything other than narrow passages, etc) or the opposite, you MUST use at least three pieces in a way unanticipated by the designer (turning the SF forcefield doors from SF Beta into viewscreens by placing two on their sides up against each other...) But there are so many ideas there, it wouldn't be practical to make a category for each of them....
