So I was looking over my beautiful collection, and thinking about the Lake Set. I was thinking "I wish the transitional elements were available singly -- the open water tile is nice, but I REALLY need two more of the transitional piece, since I have so many river pieces." Then I thought about how great the whole lake set is, and whether or not it is simply better just to plunge ahead and get another one.

Here's what held me back -- the contents of the Cavernous Water Expansion set.

I wonder -- will THAT have transitional elements like the Lake set? Either the same pieces, or different ones with the same footprint, that work the same way?

I guess it probably won't -- there are a lot of great ideas floating around for the Wicked Water set, and I doubt Stefan wants to waste slots in that set on something that already exists.

In which case, DF people, I have an earnest request: PLEASE make it so that the Lake Set is in-stock (or will be in-stock) when, eventually, the pre-orders for the Wicked Water sets go up. I want to be able to see the contents of that set before deciding whether to buy another Lake Set. The contents of that set really influence what other purchases I'll make, so I don't want to plunge ahead before knowing the contents. And I really don't want to discover I want another Lake Set only to find it won't be in stock for months!

I'm just going to go ahead and suggest that at least one River-to-Lake transition be included in the Wicked Water Expansion. It's not a waste if it is a good piece that people need.

Alternatively, it might be sold as a single piece, or it might be packaged with single-corner shore piece and a couple of Open Water pieces in a set of pieces that DF had to "go back" and produce due to high demand.

I don't disagree with either of the above - but IMO the most important piece nedded is the reverse shorline (did I say/name it correctly?) allowing lakes to be laid out in other then just rough spheical shapes...

I think THOTH and I mean the same thing by "reverse shoreline" and "single-corner piece", and I agree that it is as important as any other piece for what I consider to be a basic layout.

I have had the opportunity (and frustration) of being able to work with a considerable number of Lake Sets (3 of 4), River Sets (2 of 3) and a large number of Open Water and Straight Shore pieces.

When trying to create large and elaborate (natural) lakes, the need for certain pieces become obvious...

1) First (and foremost), is the need for multiple single-corner shore pieces (x4, IMHO).,
2) A two-corner (or transitional R-L) piece. (x2, hopefully).
3) A diametrically opposing two-corner shore piece* (x1).
4) A three-corner shore piece* (x1).

* Such pieces are needed but not often enough for multiples/set, IMHO.

Beyond this, the term needed is replaced by "highly desirable"...

5) A few accessories designed to be placable on top of the water (this has been suggested by others earlier in related threads). These may be stagmite formations, rock formations, a mud (or sand) bar, a dam and/or a collection of debris piece. These would allow users to "break-up" the linear appearance of longer/larger shorelines and would eliminate the need for additional variations of existing shoreline pieces.
6) A four-inch waterfall piece. Hopefully it is designed in such a way as to be able to use multiple waterfall pieces together -(either side-by-side, stacked or both). There are just soooo many places these can easily enhance lake setups -especially the larger and elaborate ones. Even if there were only one such piece/set it would allow collectors the chance to include waterfalls of an appropriate size based upon the desired size of their collection and setup areas.

7+) Hopefully there will be a couple of additional, creative pieces (and/or water accessories) thrown into the mix as well...

BTW,
I used the word "frustrating" earlier, only as it's very difficult to use these utterly amazing and visually stunning (lake and river) pieces (in larger or elaborate setups) already knowing that you are missing a number of critical pieces before you even start setting them out. I fully understand the reasoning and the explanations provided earlier, it just doesn't make the pieces I presently have any more useful until the needed pieces are realised.

The GREAT news is that they are already working on the WW Set, so perhaps it is well worth the wait.

Actually, I have no doubts it will be more than worth the wait!

Oh, and for the record -- I agree completely about what needs to be made that has not yet been made. The single-corner/reverse corner is absolutely essential if you want interestingly shaped lakes -- otherwise our only options are variations on oval shapes. Long oval, short oval, circle.

A three-corner one would be great, as would any number of variations on two-corner ones for further transitions.

But I originally was thinking just in terms of "purchase planning" - if I bought a new Lake Set just for pieces that I'd essentially be getting in the Expansion pack, well, then, that's $120 I need not have spent... you know?

I have a fairly large water collection and can say after this weekend (our big yearly get together) that I'll be modifying some open water tiles with putty for transitions. I'll be making open water tiles with one corner a tiny bit of land, one with three corners with tiny land and one with two opposite corners with that land pience.

Also, when running rivers over 9' in length there is an issue with the lengths of walls being a bit too long and making the set up off by a bit... enough to make the long walls not very stable.

Hello All,

I ran a large game today with many cavern, water and river sets. (2x cavern 2x cavern passage, 4x river, 3x lake and some misc. pieces) The one section had an island in teh middle of the room with a large black dragon in it. With all the above pieces I still have trouble making the cave big enough for the black dragon to fly effectively and other movement for combat. I wish i had not waiting to buy my open water pieces. I desperatly need them. I have the shoreline pieces but had various rocks and corners sticking out where they did not look flush. I wish I had enough open water pieces to make more water and also to do custom corners. Atlas I waited to long. I still would like to see the reverse shore and a 1 corner water piece not to mention some blank water pieces. The waterfall is a nice to have but the others are a must. I can not wait to get the others in stock. The Water Expansion will be great but I really need the blank water and/or the other pieces in teh expansion if they make it.

Shadox,

I managed to pick up the last of those open water tiles and even a dozen of them make a cavernous lake look very nice. I had a 5x5 foot open cavern that was a sprite garden that looked nice by adding in open water tiles....

Shadox,

It is my understanding that DF is considering selling the Open Water pieces separately, (possibly even in a group package).

This is why I didn't mention it recently as a suggested "needed" piece for the upcoming WW Set.

I agree that it certainly does belong in the category of an essential piece though, right near the top IMHO.

BTW,

Since some collectors will be content with 5 extra Open Water pieces and others will require 50 or more, selling them in this manner (separately or packaged sets) IMHO would be the most effective way to go.

It would also allow for more variety amongst the pieces in the WW Set.

Hello Guys,

The sculpting for the single shore, diametrically opposed shores, and triple shores have already been done...we have had no problems with them so far except that they are more difficult to cast than regular Resin pieces...this (advanced water builder) type of Set is not so glamorous at first sight, but I think that once you have the pieces to use it will become apparent to the newer lake builders just how important these pieces are...(kind of like the narrow passage set was) those of you that already have many lake and River pieces already know why these new pieces are so kool even though they seem very simple...

Although it is certain that these pieces are pretty essential, it may not seem so to the casual builder...I hope this doesn't result in poor sales because then it may become one of those rarely in stock sets...

Spilled Secret: We tried very hard to make a large 8x8 open water piece but alas we just couldn't make it without significant warping...in truth though, i think the smaller 4x4 open water pieces are really actually better anyway. it kind of looks wierd having a large 8x8 area breaking up the symetry of all those 4x4 tiles...anyway, we are going to bite the bullet and have some made available at a good value because we believe that everyone should have a chance to stock up on these babies...

I think that the regular "shore" piece, the one with one side land may also be more in demand for people who buy many open waters since it is often needed to enclose all that water...i found that every time I added an open water I needed to add 2 shores to keep my Lake enclosed...so we will have those available as well.

Final Note: This new set doesn't have all that much in it, as it was my belief that it was more important to have these "must have" pieces in multiples than as singles with a bunch of other new stuff. this means that after this we may even do another water addition set perhaps next year...all depends...

Anyway, don't want to say anything more or Jeff will strangle me for jumping ahead of him...

personally, I cant wait for these pieces to come in!
