OK It looks like things are getting pretty hairy.
let me clarify some points I have read in replies.

1 Yes Dwarven Forge is the best! I have had their product for the last 8 years and no one else is close to their quality!

2 What they charge for the actual product is quite reasonable considering the amount of effort it take to design create and paint it

3 When I first started dealing with DF, Stefan was very helpful and when informed of a problem ( I wasn't even complaining just asking for advice) He went above and beyond to make me a satisfied customer!

4 IF usps charges $48.00 to ship ONE floor tile then I will cease my tirade, but when I logged onto the website it says the following...
Global Priority Mail - Variable Weight (Single) more info about Global Priority Mail - Variable Weight (Single)
4 - 6 Days $8.50
You guys try it , small box 1 pound to canada.

5. The person talking about not buying it until he actually see's it has a point. Now that stores no longer sell your product I can't help but believe that it is going to hurt your sales. When my store did sell your product I was able to go in and buy a piece here and a piece there when I had the $20.00.

MY SUMMARY
By Ygorl

Dwarven Forge started out as a small terrain company when Stefan Pokorny realised there was no product available for people to use in their various game settings, After numerous attempts he came up with a secret formula for making the product that makes it very durable. Using the sales from his OGRES DEN set he started to make a modular design that allowed people to create there own designs. The only thing that they needed to work on was there advertising and sales techniques. As few people knew about their product and no proper displays or poster were seen in most gaming stores. SOme people believe a discount should have been given for ONE room set and ONE room and passage set (PER CITY, PER STORE) so that at least one store in each city had a display they could use for in game tournaments.
As it was though things were going quite well until the year 2006 when something happened to completely destroy their distribution network. They no longer were shipping to any wholesalers , and they would only sell directly to the public.
Being as they had only ONE location to ship from there sales were slowly on the decline until one day after reading a post on their website , they realized that if they were to set up a gaming store or two in each country around the world as a "HUB" and then informed customers from those areas to contact them for orders , they would be able to sell their product and charge less for shipping, the store on the other hand would be prepaid for their orders by their customers and while not making a markup on the product they would get paid for the shipping charge and they would be making a handling charge of 10% which is not bad for just being a relay station. With the added bonus of being able to purchase one set for COST for each $5,000 in sales.
Heck if they wouldn't do it , I know of one guy who has a $5,000 limit on his credit card he would use as surety for starting up a business like this.
IN the end it isn't about they money alone, it is about helping gamers play a better game!

thanks

Thing is, I understand that DF is a buisness and I'd have no problem paying what is charged for the items but when the shipping doubles my cost I just can't bite that bullet. Sorry guys, but I've got a family to feed. :)

Perhaps you'd like to emmigrate to the USA?

;)

also, in the above example - is it UPS shipping to Canada, or USPS Global express?

I am a European (English) customer and although I am smarting over the new (high) cost of DF relative to what it used to be; at the end of the day I am still buying it because it is so damn fine!!!!!!

I guess it all boils down to supply and demand - as long as there are enough of us outside the states buying the stuff at a price that is profitable for DF, they will continue to turn out the precious shiny things. (must have the precious, it's ours it is and we wants it)

You're right, Dave, we dedicated few will still buy it because it's an excellent product. However, we'll buy it in smaller quantities because of the high shipping costs. We only have a finite amount of money to spend on DF, and half of that goes on shipping expenses. I have, though, spoken to many potential customers across Europe who have bought older sets from me and would like to get hold of the newer sets too, but will not consider paying double to import them.

It is global priority mail as I stated in my original post.
The following line is a paste from the usps website. Using a 1 pound carton as my referance ,this is what usps says it would cost to ship a floor tile ,compared to what DF says it will cost.

Ygorl,

I am not completely sure, but that $48.00 shipping cost must be some sort of glitch, I'll check with Jeff, he has been on vacation the last week and I have had the Flu...

See other post. I'm pretty sure it is Global Express - not Priority mail. This starts at $16.50.

Checked with Jeff, Unfortuntaely, here's the run down on International shipping: Our fulfillment center charges us extra for International orders no matter what the size since they have to do the same amount of extra international paperwork and then have to send someone over to hand deliver the shipment to the USPS center. therefore, obviously, I would not recommend ordering single items as it comes out much better cost wise when ordering a bunch of stuff at once. well, most of you have already figured that out.
I'm really sorry, no way around it for the moment.

Ygorl, if you send me your address I will personally send you a single piece as a sample from my own collection here in NYC. How does that sound?

As far as justifying the expense of our products to Canada or other International destinations I am not sure what I can say except that the cost is a matter of personal perspective...Yes, the shipping and handling cost is more. However, that is not unheard of when dealing with shipping valuable or heavy products around the world. Consider shipping a glass table or ceramic vase...Obviously, our products are not for the younger gamers or casual players. Our products appeal to the real affectionados of the hobby. Our hand cast, hand painted pieces are the result of skilled detailed craftsmanship in as many as 3 continents. I don't think there has ever been a small company such as mine devoted to creating such fine pieces. When and if our company dies there will most probably never be another company like it. As Oil gets scarcer and the economy in China gets better the viability of our small company will start to wain...Fortunately, our pieces if handled with reasonable care, are so well made, that I am sure they will last for not just one, but multiple lifetimes. Once purchased, they can be used again and again providing hundreds if not thousands of hours of fun, creativity and inspiration for not just one person, but for groups of friends who will remember these times with great fondness even as they pass their pieces down to their children and grandchildren...
So, is it worth the investment? Well, that depends on what you enjoy in life. it is different for different people. here is an example: As an Painter (my other profession), I am used to selling small Still Life Paintings for $600- $1000 and medium sized ones for $2000-$3000...people like them. they hang them on their walls and glance at them from time to time. However, I personally think that my Dwarven Forge creations are a much better bang for the buck. Even with shipping costs, for $1000 you can have beautiful, durable hand made pieces that will provide a lifetime of creative interaction..... there are thousands of great painters in the world, but only one fanatically run company called Dwarven Forge.

Anyway, I hope I am not coming off as self agrandizing here...but I am just trying to explain why so many people are willing to pay a hundred or two hundred dollars to have our products delivered directly to their doorstep. For some people, it's just worth it. heck, some people will pay $300 for one night in a hotel or $150 for a fine dinner, or $2500 for a weeks cruise...all of which, are just memories once their experienced...I have female friends who will spend several hundred dollars on clothing, bags, or shoes and lot's of other "luxury" type items which rarely see the light outside their closets...

Everyone has their own perception of what something is worth. It's one of the things that makes the world interesting. All I can say is that the prices we charge are the lowest we can charge and still stay in business. Our business is only possible because of a passionate love of what we do.
A series of wonderful coincidences, and most importantly, a passionate audience of connosieurs who understand what we do and how to use it...

Ygorl, I hope you decide to join us.

We have a great bunch of people here, and we have a lot of fun:)

I hope the above doesn't come off the wrong way, I just got a little philosophical today, Your points were well taken and registered. I really hope that one day we can improve our shipping costs and reach more people...till then, I wish everybody the best in all their ventures and dreams...

Sincerely,
Stefan
