Lord WIlly,
As a newcomer to DF (only started in December), I heartily encourage you to take the first step. THe stuff is amazing!!! :)

I too was a little daunted by not having seen the pieces in person, relying upon web photos as well as the pictures in Dragon Magazine, the stuff is well and truly worth while. Since then, my modest little collection has ballooned. At the moment, I am the proud owner of 15 sets. With another 20 sci fi sets about to arrive within the week and that doesn't include the pre-order stuff.

No wonder my wife is griping about the bank balance being empty...........

Actually, she's griping more about the extra boxes littering the store room :D

Seirously though, ask around on the forum. They are a great bunch here. Perhaps there is someone near you who can show you their stuff. Or alternately, see if there is a convention near you that has DF stuff on display. You north americans are sooo lucky with regards to the con circuit.

:)

I would love to take the leap and honestly could see myself doing it eventually but still it is a legit concern for me that shipping almost doubles the price for me. Unfortunatly for me that's just not economical.

A cavernous set from DF costs

$129.00

Shipping:
$70.60

TOTAL:
$199.60

And thats in US funds not CDN!

I don't want to sound like a conspiracy nut but , something is wrong with this picture.

How many of you would pay $199.60 US for a cavernous set? when a store will sell the same thing for 147.00 US?

If I am just ranting and crazy let me know and I will shut up.
But IF you see my point, also let me know.

The thing is the store won't sell them for $147, if i recall it was closer to $200 in my FLGS. Heres why.

some one has to pay for the cost of shipping to get it to the store (and that is one of the big hassels back in the day when DF was sold in stores the mark up so they can make a profit off the item, that and taking up shelf space). Many times that shipping cost had to be paid Twice, once to a distrubutor like Alliance, and then again to your FLGS.
Since DF went "sell it ourselves", the prices on the sets have DROPPED.
Sure we as the customers pay a bit in shipping, but it is still cheaper than what your FLGS sold it for.
And this is here in the US, imagine what a Non US FLGS would have had to pay to get it there in the first place...

Being new to these pages, you are not seeing what we used to pay in Stores for these things (the price on the DF page and the FLGS was the same), My FLGS used to sell DF, a few years back, and the price for the Cavernous passage set was just that, in the $199 US range, for a store in the US,

When DF cut out the middle men of both the Distrubutor, and Game shop they were drastically able to reduce the price, on the individual items themselves, partly becuase those secondary palces no longer had to reflect in their price what they paid to get the darn things shipped That money for them has to come from someplace, and it went into the cost you paid at the FLGS, which was very high. I know that i got close to a $200 windfall and it was what promted me to buy the Cavernous passage set in the first place so, i don't think the $147 price tag is realistic. It isn't including the cost of the business to stock the item in the first place, right now we as customers are paying about what DF sold the stuff to the Middle man (most likely using simple econmic principles), and thus benefiting from the reduced cost on that front, but also are now having to deal with the fact that you can't drive to your local store to get it, (though it does show up on your doorstep which is in my mind is Far cooler ;) ). That means we bear the brunt of shiping, and we see how much it cost, when before (if the store was at all fiscally savy and if they weren't it might be another reason palces didn't stock DF much, becuase they were taking a loss on shipping) it was rolled into what we paid for it at the FLGS, we paid for it back then, we just never knew.

One of the places it shows how much the price has changed is on the page for the Sci-Fi sets.
"Sci-Fi Starter Set, SKU: SF-001
Old price: $50.00
Our price: $37.50 save 25%"

When these first came out at my FLGS they were $50. If the same 25% price reduction or even close is in effect on the other sets, you might still be saving money even paying for shipping. I will check my old Cavernous passages set, which bought from a FLGS, and see what it cost me, a few years ago.
My guess is it was in the $180 range, it was one of the biggest turn offs back in the day when DF was being sold in stores, the price.

Lord Willy,

Sorry for your troubles.

International shipping costs are terrible!

part of the reason is the weight of the resin, which is a high quality. It's not lightweight plastic. While It is great to hold in your hand and to set on your table...it is terrible to ship.
We used to absorb a great deal of the shipping costs but it led us to near ruin. Yes, our customer base is less than before, it's unfortunate. Be that as it may, we are actually doing much better now and are able to stay in business...something that wasn't certain before. Back when we had Distributors and Retailers it seemed that everybody was making money except ourselves...we gave out so many slices of our pie that we were left with crust and bits of crumbs...Now that we sell only directly we are able to eat properly...
Hopefully, we will eventually find some way to get stuff to Europe and to other countries cheaper...Unfortunately Canada has always been a tiny fraction of our market so realistically, without sugar coating it, I am not sure what can be done there...I don't think we will ever get a Distributor there again. I can't change the policy's of our two countries and I can't tell UPS or USPS what to charge, believe me, I wish I could!
For Europe, which is way bigger, but still very small compared to our USA market, I think there is still hope...We came very close to giving up on international sales altogether simply because of the amount of time and energy it took out of us...but maybe we will find a way.

Perhaps with another healthy year we can solve some of our International shipping puzzles and perhaps entice some people into action...

Have you ever considered making a trip to the Gen Con Gaming Convention in Indianapolis? It's the mother of all gaming conventions...Many of our International Customers get around shipping costs by making a trip to Gen Con and picking up $500 or more in product at the show....it's a great way to justify a fun trip to Gen Con which is quite a fantastic experience in itself.

Once again, I'm sorry Willy, I wish we were a huge company with enough volume for Large International Distribution but at the moment we are still pretty Mom and Pop (or Jeff and Stef)

Sincerely,
Stefan

Mr Pokorny,

Thank you so much for the reply. Let me say that I understand what it's like trying to keep a small buisness afloat and I don't blame you guys ONE bit for the shipping charges. I love the look of your product and if I can arrange it maybe I'll bite the bullet eventually. Ok who am I kidding... it's just a matter of time. :)

I did find out yesterday that there happens to be a place that has a couple of your products for sale in a near by city so I think a trip there to see them first hand may be in order. If they are as good as they look then you'll be getting an order from me.

After reading your comments sir, I WANT to support you guys!

Thanks again for your time.

Actually my full quote about the price was .........

I recently ( just this morning ) found a guy in Canada who has a store that will ship any orders over $160.00 CDN free!
His cavern set retails for 163.00 CDN. ( about 147.00 US)

It seems you left out the line about how much I can buy it for up here. An honest mistake but without it you make it look like I am basing my estimates on guess work and not fact.

Ygorl,

I am happy to hear that you have found in store in Canada that still has some of our items left in stock. Please be aware though, that we have not been selling to any stores for over a year now... so be careful who you do business with... not to say that this guy is not genuine, I am sure you know who your dealing with, as he is probably one of our older Retailers with extra stock left over from before.

Also, for your general information, our Cavern Sets (the first in the series) used to Retail for $119.00 I have no idea what each individual store decided to Retail for after they got the Sets at a discount from either us or the distributors but that was the suggested price in the USA. Stores usually got somewhere around a 40% discount, but of course the terms and shipping costs varied depending on many variables...

Lord Willy,

If you contact Jeff and provide your mailing address to him I will send you a free sample mailed from my home (from my own used stuff) that should provide you with a good idea about our quality...the piece I'll send you has seen about 10 years of action...

Thanks for your interest:)

Thanks for all your explanations. If your fellow non US customers sometimes sound so negative, then the following quote partly out of context illustrates the point

Mr Pokorny,

...

After reading your comments sir, I WANT to support you guys!

As Lord Willy is saying - we WANT to support you guys. But sometimes it feels no matter how much money we spend outside the US - we sometimes seem to support so many taxes, courier companies etc. but not Dwarven Forge - the only company which really would deserve all the money.

When I pre ordered my River Set and got my free water pieces I still paid $2 VAT on each of them. This was soooo wrong.

It's not that I paid $4 extra.

It's that I paid it to the UK tax and not to DF that is wrong. You handed out something for free - others still hold up their hand.

Yes - overall DF is worth it and I stay a loyal customer. But whenever I post in favour to find cheaper shipping solutions then not to save money but to ensure that my money actually reaches the company which deserves it for all their work.

just my 2p worth of opinion
