Bear in mind that international shipping isn't JUST the cost of the shipping itself, it's also whatever customs and tariffs have been imposed by your own countries. Frequently, that's a major portion of that figure.

I sent a car seat to friends in Vancouver when they announced that they were expecting their first child, and then had to send them MORE THAN THE COST OF THE SEAT so they could get it out of customs.

So the problem isn't DF. And it isn't (entirely) the shipping companies. It's the border fees, whatever your nation calls them.

If thats true why do I have to pay the post office Import VAT before they will release my orders? DF don't pay Duty for us. Given that in order to do so would require them to regster with every country they mail to I can umderstand why. It really would help if you guys in the states would finally get over that silliness with Stamp Duty and independence, then I wouldn't have to pay import taxes for my DF :D

Out of curiosity, I wonder how many of DF's fan base is actually international?

I know there are a number of Europeans on board, along with Dungeoneer in Japan and Bossman in Australia.

Are there more DF ppl from around the globe? Or are we a minority that will always remain unheard? :)

Hi guys! I'm with lupus and Charliemonster here. The shipping costs buying from DF are killer, and no, sorry, they don't pay custom taxes for us. If the package is caugh by custom, they charge the taxes directly to us. So the costs DF charges are only for shipping, and I too think that are too much expensive, even for the weight and volume of the packages. And I can say a couple of things about it, I've been buying to the states through different ways over several years now.

Look, I'm from Spain, and If I order 1 DoE WA, they charge me 89$ for the set, and 73$ for the shipping. If you want to pay a little less shipping costs for package, you have to take at least two sets, so, for example, if you take a MBS Set + the DoE WA, now I would pay 89$ + 99$ (the sets) + 106$ for shipping. And that don't include the custom taxes that, with a 2 DF sets order, you can bet I will have to pay (that are not even close to the shipping costs that DF charges), you can expect about 40-50$ more.

This is what have made me order only 1 set of each. And now I have to wait until 2 of them are released.

DF is a Must Have for me. If not, I would have stopped buying because I don't know how much time I can afford this costs that are not for stuff, but shipping costs and taxes.

In time, I will stop buying against my own will.

I hope some kind of alternative is found.

Just my 2 cents.

Okay, I'm wrong. International shipping fees do, in fact, suck out loud all by themselves.

But DF is not the shipping company. They didn't set the prices, and they should not be expected to eat those costs.

Jackattack,
I don't think anyone is blaming DF for it specifically.

We all know what we are getting into and to some extent live with the exhorbitant costs. It is really a credit to the products DF produce that we are still loyal customers.

What we are asking perhaps is if there was some way of reducing the costs somehow. I know DF has chosen to go the direct marketing route for control and efficiency. And, that they have chosen their current shipping method for security and speed. But surely there are other alternatives that can be looked into with regards to shipping which may decrease the costs somewhat.

I recently purchased some narrow passage sets from Otherworld in the UK. Again, the combination of the pound and shipping absolutely killed. But I needed the narrow passages for a set up and being out of production, I figured the sale was worthwhile. However, when discussing things with Otherworld, he was able to find a cheaper shipping alternative for me that saved me closed to $ 100 Australian. All I had to sacrifice was time. Rather than being there within two weeks, it would take two months. But for $ 100, I am willing to wait!

Can't other alternatives like that be found?

I know others have suggested pooling orders in an attempt to save on shipping. I work round that by increasing my orders as I usually have the capacity to cover the costs, provided I avoid other expenses that month......like going out for meals, etc :), but that really is no solution. Increased orders increases the likelyhood of attracting importation duties down under. And then there is the problem of getting the goods to the other ppl.

I know bossman has offered combined shipping for Australians. Not sure if anyone took him up on his offer, but although he is in the same country, he is in another state, and internal postage on top of international postage just kills.

And seeing as how the shipping is pricing its way out of the average gamer's budget in Australia, it's hard to find like souls to share shipping.

Look, we live with what we are given. It would just be nice if some solution could be find.

Even if it's not a local independent distributor, perhaps some form of local branch of DF, one in Europe and another in the Asia-Pacific region. All still owned by DF but goods would be shipped locally, cutting shipping costs.

I mean, the stuff is made in China, which is my neck of the world, but has to go via the US before it comes back this end. Couldn't some distribution be done somewhere in Asia? My wife has come across a papercraft supply company that markets in the US, but has a local Australian 'branch'. Items bought via the US store is actually shipped from a local 'branch', thereby saving on shipping. Not sure how it is done, but works quite well.

Sorry Jeff, just venting some frustration. You guys produce some great goods, just frustrating to have to cut our orders to pay for shipping.

The problem here, guys, as I understand it, is that DF only uses ONE method for shipping, and the reason (unless I've been misled) is that the FULFILLMENT CENTER which receives DF stuff out of the container, warehouses it until ordered, and then ships it out, will only use USPS Global Express! Even that wouldn't be a problem, except that the USPS is the United States Postal Service, which is NOT trying to compete with UPS/FedEx/DHL, etc., on a break-even and profit basis. Because the USPS is at least partially underwritten by the US Government, they don't have to present the leanest, meanest, cheapest service. EVERYTHING that moves by USPS GEx FLIES - and anyone who has traveled lately KNOWS what airlines are charging for fuel - and the USPS IS going to recoup that cost! UPS and FedEx OWNS their fleet of aircraft - well, okay, they share ownership with the banks, just as you and I do with our cars - and they must keep their expenses to the lowest possible minimum to make a profit. Either that, or they lease the birds, but they still must hold costs down. So they can charge less for flight shipping. And they WILL ship ground (or water) when possible.
The trick is going to be getting DF to offer alternative shipping for those who are willing to sacrifice immediacy for cost. WHich means DF has to hire AT LEAST ONE additional person, one who knows international shipping. That person will have to be salaried, with ALL the additional costs to DF - insurance, health care insurance, Social Security payments, Unemployment Insurance and other state/local fees, etc. And NO ONE is going to work for $5/hour anymore, even if the Minimum Wage WERE still that low (which it ISN'T!). An experienced, knowledgeable person in the international shipping field is going to cost a MINIMUM salary of $10-$15/hour, not counting the rest of the costs to DF. That expense WILL be added to the cost of DF products. ALL DF products.
ARE YOU WILLING to increase DF prices by roughly 20-25%? Keep in mind that, for international orders, that WILL be added to your Customs/VAT/Import duties/whatever; it's NOT just going to hit U.S. Domestic customers.
I'M willing to face that, to get lower shipping costs, because one, I'M not going to face those fees, so it won't affect me, and two, Sandy and I both work, and have no kids, so we're what are sometimes called 'dinks' - 'dual-incomes, no kids'. We can afford the extra price, generally.
Can YOU?
It's YOUR call.

See ya!

I was uncertain as to how DF worked with regards to the shipping, so your explanation does shine some light as to what is occurring. Being new to the DF fold, I know nothing about the DF 'family' with regards to design, fabrication and general running of the company. THis fulfilment center you describe, is it actually a DF run operation, or something that is outsourced to a third party, which runs the warehousing and dispatch? If so, I can see the problems if they will not play ball when looking at other forms of transport. But if it is a totally DF run operation, I can't see why dispatch can't look into options.

With regards to raising costs, I for one would accept a degree of increased costs if shipping could be decreased to a reasonable level. And I'm not talking a buck here or there but something more reasonable in reduction terms.

I'm a bit of a lucky one with camoudragon around here in northern Germany.

When i order, i can combine and have i.e. 5 Sets and individuals in it, that saves a lot of shipping cost.

An order to Germany may include 5 double layer sets (cavern, r+p i.e.) or of course up to ten single layer sets.

So i always look for people to combine even further, the saving on postage is really great
(think 1 set is 70$ while 5 sets are something around 25$ each).

Oh, dudes, I apologyze if my poor use of english has made somebody think that I'm blaming DF. Absolutely not, I'm sorry. Sincerely.

I was like "yahoo!" when DF announced that they would sell international customers from their own website. That way I could get the new sets for preorder, or at least, when they were released. I give thanks for all that.

But well, as wisely lupus says "we live with what we are given. It would just be nice if some solution could be find". I'm just giving my case and shouting "help please!", so DF perhaps try a new step improving this branch of the service, even sacrificing time with cheaper alternatives. In the past I would have not think of it, but now... well, it's becoming imperative for my budget...

Greetings!

DF uses USPS Global express? That seems strange, since all US packages are shipped UPS by them.

You sure about that jkratzer?

Would UPS even be cheaper at all?

The fullfilment center is, I am almost certain, not a DF run operation. I once placed an order, than 6 hours or so later wanted to add something so I called Jeff and figured no big deal, just stick these floor tiles in the box with everything else. However, the fullfillment center had already started to pack my oder and so nothign could be added - i had to submit a completely new order for the few additional items. That sounds to me like a third party operation for sure.

This also might explain how DOE sets may get shipped (sometimes?) out of numeric order....?

Thanks to everyone for their passionate views and ideas. I know that it stinks that the shipping costs are so high to non-USA addresses, but we are unfortunately stuck with them. Our fulfillment center uses only USPS Global Express for non-USA orders -- for several reasons which are particular to DF products. You have to know that we understand that the high non-USA shipping costs SEVERELY hurt our non-USA sales. From a business stand point we whole-heartily wish that there was a less expensive method that offered all the same benefits.

We will continue to stay current on all the international shipping methods, and if anything changes we will jump on the opportunity like a gamer at a free pizza buffet. And thank you to everyone who can manage the high shipping costs for their DF stuff. We very much appreciate the extra effort all our international customers must make.

Hello Mr. Martin,

I'm new to the forum but have been eyeing up your product for a while now. My problem is simple... I simply can't justify paying that much for a product I can't even see. While the pictures and user reviews, etc look great, just ordering a sample of the product is cost prohibative for us poor Canadians. :)

I'm assuming you've looked into someone within Canada to distribute your product? Have you had no luck on this front? If a person had some ideas would you be open to hear about them?

thank you for your time.
