Detailed Idea for New Set 7 Years, 7 Months ago
I have an idea for a new set (what I would call a new line), down to images to illustrate what I think it should look like. I'd love to post it, but I'm a bit hesitant.

Is it the height of arrogance to post an idea with that level of detail, to the site of a company that has already produced some incredibly creative work? Or would I just be using the site as intended, and sharing an idea with a receptive audience of people who enjoy discussing ideas about potential new pieces?

I would just be posting the idea. I have no illusions about it ever being produced, let alone suggesting that anyone drop what they are doing and get to work on it right away.

What do y'all think?

jack -

The only problem I see would be one of copyright; if you post an idea here, in enough detail that Stefan and Jeff could get an actual, serious inspiration and produce it, that could leave them open to an infringement problem if you later got nasty about it. I'm NOT saying you would, or that your heirs and assigns would (in the legalese), but it could happen.
The only way to avoid that would be to FIRST enter in you post a statement of surrender of ownership of the idea, and assign it to Dwarven Forge, preferrably with a scanned signature, BEFORE you post the idea.
I may be taking things farther than necessary, and perhaps even in the wrong legalese format, BUT, after some of the crap I've seen in Federal courts, it's better to CYA and C DF A, if you understand my acronyms there.
Talk to Jeff and Stefan first; if they feel it would be okay, then by all means, POST AWAY!!!

And NO, I don't see Jeff, Stefan, or anyone else here on the forum, thinking it arrogant or anything even remotely like that. Besides, if there IS anyone like that, we'll find them soon enough, and FLAME ON!!

Good luck, and See ya!

Well, if you did take the work... why don't share? I think it's only tell your friends online about an idea... we could use chat but... this is easier...

Jackattack -- I say post it. My feeling is that "the more ideas, the better".

God knows that I've been posting enough ideas here. I don't think that Stefan has any copyright worries from this crowd. I believe that everyone here on this forum is pretty genuine and truly Dwarven Forge's biggest fans. I'm confident that I speak for all in saying that we all want the BEST and most awesome products that DF can create!

I for one, have been a big fan of many of YOUR ideas that you have posted in the past (Man, I still like your "HIVE" idea!). I say go for it! If nothing else, it may spark "something else" in Stefan's creative mind.

Jack Attack,

we are pretty full up with projects for the near future... but am happy to see whatever you have come up with...if it's truly a great idea and as detailed and planned as you say, you may want to send it directly to Jeff rather than just posting it for all our potential rivals to see...ha, ha! That's pretty paranoid of me isn't it?

Not too sure about the legality stuff but we obviously won't go ahead with anything that could potentially ruin us...so yes, we would ask for your permission to create if we ever got to that...

While I'm not an expert on this, I believe copyright and trademark are very different things. While you may be able to copyright a story, poem, etc. by posting on the net (not even sure about that) I really don't think you can trademark a product simply by posting a description on the internet. So I wouldn't worry too much about this. And I think Jackatack was simply offering to give more cool ideas to Dwarvenforge as he has been doing for a while, hoping that Dwarvenforge produces it for all of us to enjoy, just that this time his suggestion was going to have more detail. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

CYA is the RULE!

Message it directly to DF.
If they like it, come to an agreement and then post it, if both sides agree.

ALWAYS PLAY IT SAFE!!!

This is definitely under the heading of "Hopefully Cool Ideas for DF".

I've posted enough thudders that I don't know if it is actually a good idea or not, but I like it and it sprang up almost fully formed. There are some "experimental" elements to it, and I don't know how many of each piece should necessarily be in a set (four corners pieces, obviously, but how many walls and how many windows?).

If (and this is a lottery-level if) DF does decide they like it and want to develop it into a set, I trust them to send me a message and ask for permission. After all, Stefan and Jeff are gamers too. Of course, a couple-few boxes of the set when it ships would be nice... ;) I am aware, though, that DF has lots of other projects to work on already, and enough ideas of their own that even if they like mine, it could be years before anything came of it.

I also know that something that looks good on paper doesn't necessarily translate to three dimensions. (Compare superhero costumes in comic books to costumes in movies.) There may be difficulties in casting or painting that make it untenable. It might not be "right" for the current gaming market. So I'm not holding my breath about this hitting the "online shelves" ever, let alone "soon".

I would love to accept Stefan's gracious invitation to send the images to Jeff, but I don't know how to add a file to the e-mail options available in the forums or on the website. If they would like to send me a method of submission through the forum (or regular) e-mail, I could send them the file.

And if they say "It's nice, but it's not us," should I post it to the forums anyway?

As far as sending it, do not use the DF forum e-Mail system.
Just send it directly to Jeff at <jeff@dwarvenforge.com>.
You just use the "Attachment" function on your normal e-Mail account you have and use where ever and away it goes.
Simple.
Have fun.

Jack, worry not your fair head. Should the ideas be a bust, the worst that can happen is that the Stefan and Jeff don't use them. "Nothing ventured, nothing gained." Heck, we on the forum would only point out such flaws as we saw them at the very worst.

This isn't a forum where people are mocked and derided by means of internet assault. The D&D forum on Wizards seems to be the place for that, sadly.

This is a friendly forum, for lovers of Master Maze. Why, I could feel the love the last two weekends, as the fiendish dire rats feasted on fresh Dwarf flesh. That's where our sick and twisted minds work their evil ways, not in castigating people for daring to offer new ideas.

Jackattack - fire away, I think one of the implicit 'purposes' of the forums are so that people can share ideas. If DF like them, they can use them. To see your idea made into a real set would be great so everybody gains. I would have thought that posting an idea in a public forum and saying "use this idea if you like DF" would be legally 'safe' for DF. (But hey, I'm not an American Lawyer - are there any on this forum that know better?) As for the competition - phooey, we wouldn't buy it from them if DF offered an alternative - we know that the DF product would probably be a bit more expensive but vastly superior in quality.
