How to put the Lake Set pieces back in the box? 7 Years, 11 Months ago
O.k., I feel pretty silly now, but I ordered three Lake Sets, and when they arrived I was excited to see what I could build with them. I took out all the pieces from all the boxes and built a nice big lake set up. I had to run to work so I left everything set up on a table, and then ended up leaving it set up for a week. Now I wanted to put everything back in the boxes, and I can't even begin to figure out what pieces went where. I tried just putting pieces anywhere they fit, but I ended up with all the places filled and several extra pieces. Clearly, some spaces are supposed to hold more than one piece, stacked up. But I have no clue which pieces go where. Is there instructions or a picture that might help me figure out what goes where when storing the Lake pieces back in the boxes they came in?

Z--don't feel silly. I stood there for TWENTY MINUTES scratching my head trying to figure out how to get mine back into storage! ha ha...

The two pieces with the largest/longest stalagmites go in the outermost corners with the square holes carved into the bottom. The three pieces with the smaller stalagmites go into three of the innermost squares, and the others go into the remaining slots. I put the flattest pieces in the deepest slot so that I could stack two (three?) of them on top of each other.

All of the pieces should get placed in the box upside down except for the flatest ones.

This is a post edit note (had to make sure my bacon wasn't burning in the stove!)--If you place the pieces with the largest projections upside down in styrofoam, you'll have room to stack some of the other pieces on top of them (the flattest ones if I recall.

I hope that helps!

Thanks, Dante. I'll have to try this out tomorrow and see if I'm able to get all the pieces back in the box this time.

Heh,

I unpacked my first one and made sure I left the other 2 packed so I could see how they go back together.

All

Someone should just make a map using the Tile System. I'm using some IKEA made 'drawers' for all my storage. It took me a day to work out a way to optimize all 20 currently filled boxes (approx. 8*12 inch each). Now I'm in the process to draw a 'map' for each of them. Some are simple (with 30 corners there isn't much you can do wrong with a simple one) but others can be non-obvious and the maps do help there. Also I intend to use them as small labels on the front.

Having said this - storing wise the Lake set really causes me problems as they are in principle flat - but most pieces are non-stackable.

Which Ikea drawer are you using? I've been looking around for a goodlooking solution, but have so far only come up with a very beautiful, but expensive, Japanese range.

I think the lake sets may be one I will not store back in the box. While most of my sets I still do keep in original boxes, and some have some spare space for individual bits, the Lakes it seems could be packed much more efficently as many of the pieces will stack quite well.

I cut out some of the stacking stuff in my two lake sets, so that the additional water pieces fit in.
The lakes will be stored in the boxes, cause i fear the stalagmites could break off when packed
in another storage container.

I live in Japan, and I found the most perfect storage drawers for DF. I will take a picture later and post it.

C'mon, guys!

Remember, the stuff came OUT of the box, so it HAS to fit BACK into the box.
Remember, there are @ 2 pairs of lake pieces that get flipped in the slot, so one is face-down, and the other is stacked face-up on top of it, with (IIRC) a styrofoam pad piece between them.
Look, you guys are near-genius or better, or you wouldn't be USING DF; why so hard to put it back in the box? It only takes a LITTLE bit of logic to figure out the loading system that Stefan and Jeff and Co. have designed into these cases. If I can figure it out, you guys should be WAY ahead of me. Just step back a minute, relax, drink a cold one, and then put the stuff back in the box.
Voila!

See ya!

I'm the guy that wound up with the extra nut. No comments from the peanut gallery, please.

You remember when you were a kid and you used to like to tinker with things, taking them apart to see how they work, and then putting them back togther--or trying to put them back together again?

So I got all of my sets packed up from that massive photo shoot I did a few weeks ago (yes, I'm very far behind on my hobby room cleaning schedule) and guess what I find stashed under a scrap of paper? Yep. Another Cavernous Lake set piece. "How'd THAT get there?? More importantly, how in the HELL am I going to fit that into the box now?!?" rofl

Well, actually,

Jeff and I had nothing to do with the way the Lake pieces are packed back in the box this time...there was just no time...the factory has specialists who design these packing methods who seldom follow our suggestions...sometimes we just go with the flow in order to get the shipment off in time...and this time speed was really of the essence...I am sure people didn't want to wait 3-4 months just because we wanted to perfect the styrofoam compositions... which probably would have ended up in us using double layer larger boxes which would have ended up costing some people a lot more in shipping costs...Actually, we were such a pain in the but with the factory about everything else, that we basically had to let the box designer do his thing on the fly...

Sorry guys!
Hey I also had the same problems at Gen Con trying to stuff all those rivers and lakes into their boxes...so I feel the same pain!

PS
Jeff, I still haven't gotten my Rivers or Lakes Sets!! I knew I should have hijacked some at the con...

Stefano.
