Hi folks,

Of the various photos of the set that have been posted, does anyone know if any of them actually show the contents of a single set in use? I've been trying, and failing, to work it out.

If the Newsletter photo descriptions are correct i believe the first few photos (8? of them) show just one set.

D'Oh! Of course, actually reading the words of the email rather than just looing at the pictures does help!

It seems you can actually do quite a lot with one set - enough to do the ground or upper floor of, say, an inn.

Now then, it's our anniversary (22 years) on Friday. SWMBO is getting GBP80 (~USD150) worth of pictures, plus some items of clothing (probably another GBP30 worth). At the moment, I'm getting nothing - money is tight - but this begins to feel unfair...

I wonder...

I was very impressed by how much you can do with one set. Unlike some of the other recent releases, it really feels like the MBS is quite complete on its own. It's like an entire building in one box -- for every building you want on your table, you can get a new box.

I mainly got two sets because I wanted two secret doors, plus I just wanted extra pieces to give me more flexibility. I doubt I'll make larger setups than I would with only one box, but I may use different pieces more often...

I keep getting an image in mind of a huge cavern with a Tudor-timbered tavern built INSIDE the cavern.

Sorta like my little filk-song a while ago;

"In a Tavern,
In a Cavern,
Excavatin' Dwarven Wine;
Lived a Miner's Daughter finer
Than a Tomato on the Vine."

Or something like that.

See ya!

Jim - that's a wild idea. :-)

I'm not sure I'd do it myself, but I like it, in a surreal kinda way. The thought reminds me slightly of the underground city in CS Lewis' 'The Silver Chair' - though the detail may well be waaay wrong - it must be 35 years since I read it!

I fully expect people (meaning "me") to progress something along these lines:

1st setup: Basic inn/tavern layout.
2nd setup: As above, but stacked to make 2-level building
3rd setup: As above, but stacked on dungeon pieces rather than MBS
4th setup: Some kind of tavern with a . . . lake in the basement!
5th setup: More matching and mixing of dungeon and MBS with occasional cavern parts:

- Cavernous passage transition to suggest that, beyond the secret door, the tavern-owner is excavating a mine....

- Mermaid fountain and Sarcophagus -- the tavern is built around a hidden Tomb for a legendary knight

- Dungeon pieces spiraling around bordered by MBS pieces -- a hidden secret passage
made of stone winding through the inn...

And so on. I'm just saying, expect a LOT of creative mixing as ideas present themselves. Some of the best ideas aren't going to manifest, of course, until we have a chance to play around...

I still maintain that dwarves have built taverns (and even inns) every twenty miles underground. No reason not to make them cozy and inviting (the better to separate adventurers from their freshly-won treasure).

Ah - but that's you and your humanocentric view of the world getting in the way. Who says that dwarves find timber and wattle walls 'cozy and inviting'? I suspect they think it's just shoddy, uncomfortable, and poorly built - typical of those lazy humans. How much more inviting a proper stone-built inn would be to a dwarf!

A dwarven tavern aimed at humans though - now I could see them building a 'theme tavern', with gen-you-wine wattle and daub walls, in order to part the silly humans from their cash (which, being minted from precious metals, surely ought all to belong to a dwarf anyway).

Phil, tongue firmly in cheek and devil's advocate's cap jammed on his bald pate.
