So with the way DF has been changing during the last year, from a gaming stores distribution and prices to a more to-the-customer, higher priced, collector approach, I was wondering about the Arena.

Would the Arena be possible to produce now?

At the time, if I remember well, the reason it wasn't produced was the cost for the company that would have made the Arena way too expensive. I wonder, with the new sets and new orientation of the company, if it would be possible to produce the arena.

I wonder how the costs of production for DF evolved. I don't want to jeopardize any priviledged information for the company, but I've been wondering how the techniques and costs of production for DF evolve, and what kind of new possibilities it offers for us as customers.

If you don't see what the Arena set was, here's a picture:

While it's a lovely set, I'm a good Dwarven Forge customer, but I still probably wouldn't get it. So there you go.

I'd rather see more Wicked Additions-type sets that are more modular and reusable.

Pretty spiffy! If I could scrounge up the cash, I'd buy one. Heck, who needs two kidneys, anyway?

You know, it's a very nice piece but I wouldn't buy it simply because I already have an arena. It's from Steve Barber Models in the U.K. I bought it through RLBPS (www.rlbps.com) a few years back. It's a very, VERY heavy resin kit that comes unpainted. I've only painted up one section to date. You can see it here:
www.purgatorio.com/gameroom/photos/game013.html The colors in that photo are horrible. The actual colors came out really nicely. I'll probably wind up painting the other pieces sometime this summer. It requires a lot of priming outdoors.

I really like this coliseum and I have a knack for painting so I didn't mind having to do the prep work myself. The model comes in four sections and retails for $210 + S&H from RLBPS. I bought this before I got married. Couldn't do it now. The wife would seriously choke me for spending that much on "one" terrain piece. ;-}~ Somehow she's o.k. with me buying multiple Cavernous River and Lake sets though... heh heh.

At any rate, I posted that picture here a long, long time ago when this topic first came up. For those of you who haven't seen it, I hope you like it. For those of you who have, look at it again. It makes me happy. ROFL

Take it easy you guys.

I'm a "no" on the arena as well. It's beautiful, but it has two major drawbacks for me.

One, it's freaking huge! Not only in terms of footprint, but in height as well. I shudder to think how much storage space it takes unassembled -- it looks to be equivalent to three or four standard DF sets. And it probably weighs a ton!

Two, it has only one use. It's an arena. I suppose it could be an arena in multiple genres (fantasy, historical, modern (retro architecture), sci-fi), but it really is just an arena. I'd rather see a set of quarter-circle walls (maybe 6"x6" pieces) that I could put at the corners of a large square or rectangular room to simulate arenas in different configurations. (Square for combat, long rectangles for chariot races.) Other DF sets have plenty of doors and porcullises and wall-torches and stuff to dress it up nicely. In other words: Modular good, static bad.

For those who must have it, the question is how much are you willing to pay for it? If DF's number-crunchers want to figure out how much it would cost to create a full DF Arena on a case-by-case basis (not mass-produced in China, but made on an order-by-order basis here in the US) and post a price, I'm sure that someone will be willing to pay it. But there will be no savings on a foreign labor source, no economies of scale (discounts for large numbers), and the buyers might have to pay for molds as well.

I'd drop $200 plus shipping on it; I wouldn't drop $250+.

But then, see, I could ALWAYS put a bunch of BattleMechs in there and let 'em slug it out, a la Solaris VII!

Whatcha think, RF*?

See ya!

Jim

PS: I went over the Steve Barber section on the storefront Dante was talking about, and the coliseum/arena doesn't seem to be there any more.

Hmm. Weird. I just verified the link and listing today at www.rlbps.com. Here's the direct link to their Steve Barber page: www.rlbps.com/RLBPber.htm

Go about half-way down the page till you get to the header "25MM GLADIATORS & WEAPONS"... it's listed as"
"G20 Complete Amphiteatre $210.00"

I also would NOT buy it for the simple reason is that it is too use specific.

The one thing I really like about DF is the modularity of the pieces combined with the fact that they are "multi-use". AN arena is an arena- if I wanted to make one I could easily do so with existing DF terrain.

I'm also in the "No" category (no matter how nice it may be).

It's too specific, too historical and, if I recall correctly, Stefan mentioned during the last round of discussions that it would be well over $500.

I don't know about you, but that would get me many more modular sets than a "one shot wonder".

That being said, watch it be the "Mystery Set" we're all waiting on the edge of our seats for :)

I am a "NO!" as well.
Too restricted in its play use and no where near modular enough so that at least a decent number of its pieces could be used for something else.
Sounds way too much like the near-useless Ogre's Den!

I'd drop $200 plus shipping on it; I wouldn't drop $250+.
YC only wishes it was this cheap.
Myrthe is right that Stefan said it would be frightfully expensive to make and then sell.
I do not remember $500 exactly, but that should be fairly close.

But then, see, I could ALWAYS put a bunch of BattleMechs in there and let 'em slug it out, a la Solaris VII!

Whatcha think, RF*?

It would only be Steiner Stadium.
Personally, I prefer Ishiyama or Boreal Reach.
Even that potential Sci-Fi use, I am still voting "NO!!"

Let me restate something- if it was a straight arena and that was its only use then its a no from me for the reasons already given.

However, if Stefan in his fevered imagination came up with a way to make a stadium that could be broken down into modular parts to make additional buildings, somehow, then that may change my vote. If the usefulness of the set means I can make a small village, medium tavern with stables, etc out of it then the expense may be justified.
