TOPIC: What about bases?

Hi Stefan and Jeff -

I had one of those random "what if ..?" thoughts on the commute to work this morning...

Have you ever considered developing miniature bases to coordinate with your DF environments (MM, Caverns, DOE and Sci Fi)? I know you've stepped away from the miniatures production but was thinking that this might be a simple way to provide a product with endless re-order possibilities. I, for one, would love all my figures to be based according to the primary environment I'd use them in. And, since I'm always buying new figures, I would always be buying bases. My diverse collection (mfr, material, pre-painted, etc) could all be based uniformly. I'd expect that they might even appeal to those non-DFers who just do miniatures but not the terrain (how could they ?!!). DF already has the patterns developed (for the most part) and the colors are already established as well. Simple solid resin sculpted bases (no slots) might be a great accessory to add to your arsenal of product and one that could probably be added quickly and with minimal effort (so you can continue to focus on all the phenomenal sets and surprises for the summer / fall) !!!

As always, thanks for listening, for the endless fun, and the tireless effort !!

Random question to you Myrthe...

Where in CT are you?

and to be on subject, intersting idea, i have to admit i wouldn't mind some that are in the same grid pattern of the Sci-fi line would be cool, or even the DoE would be spiffy. But would you do them square or round?

My games round is the default, but for many games square is and one section of a DF piece would be perfect for making a square base.

Now THERE'S a miniatures idea that I can get behind!

Jeff? Stefan? Whatcha think? Square Sci-Fi, square Fantasy, square DoE, rounded Caverns? Those would pretty much fit the floor in each area, and "probably" wouldn't be TOO difficult to make or stock (China could throw a 6-pack in each Styrofoam box, and a box of 6-packs (say, 4 packs to a box?) would probably be no larger than a 6" wall box. Better yet, you could price a 6-pack just under $10 and probably make a decent profit on each pack - assuming the price of resin doesn't reach Lunar orbit!

See ya in Indy!

That would be brilliant! Bases in the same heavy resin, with DF quality sculpting, and pre-painting would get lots of my buisness.

Plus, a bag o bases whouldn't cost too much in packaging I would hope.

I really love this idea.

Where in Connecticut are you two? I am in Bethel- if you are nearby send me a PM or e-mail, and come on over! :D

ANd Jkratzer- I go down to Baltimore a few times a year to visit my daughter (she is in Owings Mills). I would *love* to see your room.

As for the bases I also thinks its a great idea but I'm not sure if the profit margin would be in it. There are already so many companies making decent bases of all types that I cannot see DF doing it. Quite franklly I would rather see any limited DF funds go into more flooring/walls or accessories- after all they are really the only ones putting out this high quality terrain.

Wow Blackhawk1, how much money does your ex- have?
Or is it a grown-up daughter?
Anyway, that is the ritzy westside of Baltimore County!
I had quarters in Catonsville and only went to Owings Mills if I wanted to blow serious money and try to keep it in Baltimore County at the same time.

...

Sorry Jim and allies, but I am with Blackhawk1 on this issue.
Yes, the bases might be really cool, but I rather the funds were spent on getting more Sci-Fi Master Maze out.
Maybe one day, but not for a few years.

BH1 -

E-mail me next time you're gonna be here.

RF* -

Owings Mills has become another bedroom community, and the average income there has *Fallen!*. On the bases issue, we'll just have to agree to disagree. But I WILL say this; I only want DF to do the bases IF they can do it without hurting other production!

See ya! (in Indy?)

I'd just like to know where I can get my hands on some of the same felt used on the bottoms of the DF pieces.

I would be willing to modify my statement to agree with Jk- I could deal with bases so long as it did not impede other DF items.

Geek- I also am interested in that felt. Over time I have had a few of them peel off/tear. I found stuff that is close but still too thick.

Now for the derail- Rabid- I've only been married once and am still married so no ex-. My stepdaughter is 31, her husband is an anastheseologist (I can never spell that word) at John Hopkins, she is a psych Ph.D. doing her post-doc at Hopkins, and I was down in Baltimore last week working on my doctorate :D. We went to CJ's andf I beat steamed crab to death with a mallet.

Sounds like a brilliant idea to me.

By making bases, it would allow DF to provide a compatablity solution (in size, shape and appearance) to many customers as they use their minis in their campaigns or game setups.

By producing the bases only it would allow for a set to contain perhaps, a fair few pieces (eg: twenty 1"x1" and four 2" x 2").

I Do have one reservation though. This idea would only work if a reasonable number of (DF using) mini collectors were willing to modify/mutilate their existing mini collections, for the sake of aesthetics and compatability when using DF. I would be interested to hear who would be willing to do so.

On the plus side, If someone were to modify their (presumably, entire) mini collections, they might be required to order quite a few sets in order to do so.

One final note:

Don't get me wrong, I hope that DF sticks to what they do best (creating awesome modular underground terrain). This one solution I believe would ultimately consume only a finite amount of resources (1 set) and would possibly add a certain amount of closure (re: future), and support (re: the past) of the mini line.

fyi
My collection consists entirely of lead/metal minis myself so this solution would not effect me at all. That being said, I do think it would help many users of DF enjoy it's use with their minis that much more when gaming.
