This thread is going to be my personal thread, it seems.. C'mon guys, no other posts?

Anyhoo, two new ideas:

1. Make a psuedo-atol, a kind of ringed island ring like this:

(with two sets)

curved river -- straight river -- straight river -- curved river
T-cross river -- river end -- -- river end -- T-cross river
curved river -- straight river -- straight river -- curved river

Donut island!

2. You CAN combine these with non-cavern pieces, I can see. The "land" portions
are so small, it could look just like the jagged riverbank, the few stalagmites would
maybe look out of place, but they wouldn't make it look terrible. If anything, it
could look really cool. If the river were the BORDER of the cavern, even better --
one side would be pure cavern, the other side could be normal dungeon, it would
look like the gradual taming of nature....

Just thoughts -- I shudder to think how many ideas I will have by the time I actually own this set....

the more i think about that set and look at the pictures the more i think damm you df!!!!!

you made such an amazing set. it ads so much flavor to the allready very spicy caverns. finally you can have very cool water in your set ups. with the free standing walls you can create narrow cavern passages. lots of people will rewrite their adventures just to use those new pieces...

but it is so cool and so very usable - you just need min. 2!!!!

and with the development of the last year in mind, what will the future bring us? more set like this?

and who is going to pay for that? and if we are not goig to sign up for bankruptcy who is going to pay for those expensive funerals - cause i wont leave this world without all my beautifull df stuff in my coffin!!!!
if i file for bankruptcy can i work in your factory in china and handpaint future sets?
did you ever think of a retirement home for df users? (some of the future young users going bankrupt can take care of the older ones-its good for both sides...)

Well, I finally got the State Tax refund, so I order my 3 sets yesterday.

C'mon, June!!

I guess I'll just have to wait until then. It's gonna be rough, waiting that long, but it'll be worth it. I've got some ideas already, including a very WET section in the setup ReBob and I are planning for next year's Shore Leave (2007)! Bwahahahahaha! This one is gonna use MM, Caverns, Sci-Fi, Possibly DoE, and non-DF village stuff as well! We've already got part of it laid out, awaiting our playtesters.

Those poor playtesters; they're gonna HATE me when they're finished.

See ya!

Man, when these sets show up it's gonna go crazy around here. It seems like yesterday when we were constantly screaming at DF to get the sets moving along, every time a different set was announced....

I'm still caught up in wondering about the contents of the Lake Set.
At least 1 "all water" piece.
Maybe 1 "water on the edge, but land in the middle" piece
Probably at least 1 "lake bank" piece, like the river but with land only on one edge.

Thing is, with another company, I'd say maybe that'd be it. Four "edge" pieces, and two or three "interior" pieces and you can make a straightforward lake. That's it. Maybe a transitional piece or two so rivers can flow in and out of the lake.

But with DF -- I wouldn't be surprised if there were more. The transitions from cavern to dungeon are so stunning, I'd expect the delta pieces to have some real special touches. And I also wouldn't be surprised if there were some other new neat surprises in the set. Whirlpools? Waterfalls?

I wonder if the Lake set will have walls at all, removeable or otherwise?

How about, instead of accessories like stalagmites or rock piles, there were things like placeable tentacles for "monster from the depths" effects?!

Ooooohh...

Law, you are not only sick, warped, twisted, and perverse (all those good qualities I LIKE in a person!), but you are seriously telepathic!
Those tentacles are EXACTLY what I want as a part (not the whole thing!) of the Lake set!
WHEE-E-E-E-e-e-e-!!

That's a GREAT idea. And, if you're willing to go my "gloss-coat first, then tempera paint overcoat" route, then you can alter the color of the tentacles from game to game. Cool, eh?

AND, the whirlpool and waterfall are ALSO excellent ideas for the set. They would be perfect goodies; a waterfall to either fill or drain the lake, and a whirlpool to menace the adventurers who dare the terrors of the lake itself.

See ya!

What do people think about DF making some "oversize" e.g. 6 by 6 or even 8 by 8 sized single tile water features and cavern floor tiles. This would enable BIG caverns to be laid more quickly and bigger features to be included in future sets. Also, more flexibilty when combined with the regular sized pieces. Or would this be a problem with the water sets ? (bigger surface area = more potential for warpage?). Also, what about dedicated sandy/shingle/bones beach edge cavern floor pieces. I can hear the lapping of the Unlit seas on the Aboleth bone beaches..... sigh.
Answers on a post card please.

I wouldn't mind seeing a 6x6 piece, but I don't think I'd want to see anything larger than that. It takes away so much flexibility when you have pieces that large, it leaves you with fewer options for new arrangements. The regular 4x4 floor pieces are perfect for me -- big enough that the caverns are larger than regular dungeons, but small enough that you can still make a lot of different kinds of things in a small space.

I love the idea about various kinds of lake banks -- that would be very cool.

I'm getting extremely curious about what this Lake set will actually look like...

I take your point about the flexibility issue. It's just that one of the reasons why I think the cavern stuff looks (in my humble opinion) better than the 'regular' dungeon stuff (that still looks might fine though!) is because when you lay out a decent sized 'room' you are not faced with as much of a 'floor grid effect' because of the small size of the floor pieces. I know you could model them out but few of us can afford so many pieces they can "tie up" loads of floor sections in fixed set ups. The larger cavern floor tiles would enable us to make bigger cave rooms with even less of the 'grid effect.'

It's too late to add anything to the Lake Set as it is now...but perhaps some of these suggestions can be incorporated into a Limited Edition add on set next year. The Lake Set is rather generic for the most part...it makes a Lake. There are no walls included...one will have to use the many walls from the River Set if they need them. I have found in experimenting that one doesn't really need any more walls If they have the River Set and the Lake Set and the Cavern Set combined together. The greatness of the Lake set is in it's function really, it's pretty straight forward, it makes a Lake. But added to the River Set they both become much better. Yes, there are transitional pieces so the Lake can turn into a river (or If you see it the other way, the river can turn into a Lake depending how you decide to look at it) The sculpting on the generic "banks" is somewhat more intricate and exciting to me, but that's just me. I had fun sculpting it. Oh, and there is a small "surprise" in the Lake Set but I am absolutely sworn not to let it out...

Stefan.

Stefan, let me just say something here -- without having seen this set at all --

YOU ARE SELLING YOURSELF SHORT.

You sound like you don't think we'll be impressed by it, or that the set isn't as spectacular as some other sets.

There is nothing Dwarven Forge has ever released that has been anything other then totally spectacular.

The Lake set is going to blow us all away, and like you said, with the River set it's going to be even better.

It isn't generic, and it won't be just you.

Thanks for the teaser info on the set contents, by the way! We're all counting down the days here...

Stefan;

That "drip, drip, drip" you hear is NOT the water building stalagmites.

It's me, drooling as I wait for the Lake set(s)!

See ya!
