Just some random thoughts on making great caverns & Caves.

1) Have a lot of sets !!! If you already have lots also get more ;) (You can't have too many Cavern or Passages sets.)

2) Alternate passage pieces with caverns using the conversion pieces. This makes your cavern tunnel narrow then open up then narrow again much like a real cave. (It also screws up Line of sight [LOS] of the PC's)

3) Make lots and lots of twists and turns (Not many straight lines like with a Dungeon) There should be a real diference between the two types of areas which affects Order of march, tactics, etc.

4) Get lottsa stalagmites and use them a lot in large cluster groups. (Monsters love to hide in these and they keep PC's on their toes)

5) Caverns have odd ventilation be sure to describe the whistles and gusts of warm/cold air that are whipping by. (Nice to have a powerful wind surge suddenly put out the partys tourches plunging them into utter darkness)

6) D&D put out a wonderful supplement (Campain Guide??) that had lots to say about Caverns/Caves (Poison Air, Exposions, Cave-ins etc)

7) See #1 above.... (Grin)

The Dungeoneers Survival Guide was best here. Had a lot of detail about underground exploration. Was never really able to use it before, but I think I will drag it out and see what I can do.

That's the spirit. :D

All my point was is that Caverns can be really cool places to adventure if done with the same attention to detail that use for our Dungeons.

Yea, The Dungeoneers Survival guide and the Blue covered campaine source book were both great. (Not real popular, but DMs loved em')

Now all I need is a Wicked Caverns 1 & 2 sets.

someday............

What would be great is stalagtites and a roof for the caverns so we can go 3-D 360!

I'd be happy with the water sets. My caverns need a nice river leading into a lake...........

Well, I just got my Cavern Set today, and everybody who recommended it was right, it's incredible.

I'll add some random points to Thor's extensive list. :)

1) If you're making a large flat area, break it up by using medium flat stones and stalagtites. Also, placing small flat stones on top of the large flat ones makes interesting cover for small rats...

2) When placing additional terrain, don't cover the clear resin puddles. It's a shame to cover those...they look so cool. :P

3) Lots of small annoying creatures or a few big ones works best. Mixing the two and lotsof terrain can be a real mess. Of course, if you want it to be...

Some suggestions for a Wicked Caverns Set
A wall section with a Clear Resin Waterfall (4x4)
A floor section with a chasm, pit or otherwise 'hole in da ground' (4x4)
A wall section with a small crevice (start of a tunnel?) (4x4)
Two gently sloped floor sections to break up the 'flat' look of the cavern (4x4)
A wall section encrusted with diamonds/silver/gold whatnot. (4x4)

That would make the cavern even better, and combine well with the upcoming water set.
