Sounds like a great idea. What kinds of pieces would you include in the set?

One Obvious Suggestion here would be Some Conversion Pieces since this is an all "New" Type of Floors/Walls...

Somthing which I Hope honestly that DF will look at for a Future Set all of it's Own...

Fantasy to Caverns... (Already Exist, but should still be a part of any "Set" of Conversions I Think)...

Fantasy to Gothic...

Gothic to Caverns...

Gothic to Sci-Fi...

Sci-Fi to Caverns...

Sci-Fi to Fantasy...

AND of Course Conversions for each of the Four Cuurent/ Planned Environments to Transits Crypt/Catacolms set...

Sounds like a great idea. What kinds of pieces would you include in the set?

I think it would have:

1. Crypt/Catacomb style corridor pieces matching the size/width of the existing sets (straight, corner, "tee and intersection) Some of the pieces might be a little wider to allow for the shelves/alcoves, but the pieces should all still be able to combine with any other DF set.

I see this set having more corridor pieces, and less room pieces. The idea is that with the ledges, alcoves, and openings in all the walls, there's more to explore in a Catacomb than in a regular stone dungeon corridor. More places for creatures to leap out from. More places for traps and treasure. The corridors become “rooms themselves.

Perhaps one wall would have openings, and one wall would be smooth, and you could alternate the way you set the pieces up:

2. A few wall sections or alcoves would have small tunnels or holes broken through from “the other side as if the tomb/catacomb had been tunneled into and looted before. These same holes could also be used as lairs for various rats, vermin or alien face-huggers.

3. Maybe have carved archways instead of dungeon doors. I wonder if there could be a way to have curtains or sliding panels covering the door openings instead of swinging wooden doors.

4. An impressively large "tomb door" that can be rolled or slid out of the way, for all those tense "unsealing the tomb" moments, or for the “hurry up and seal the door forever before the undead hoard devours us scenarios. The same massive door could be a “blast door in a sci-fi game.

5. Some crumbling, unsafe-looking stairs leading “up to the surface. Maybe another stair leading downward to a lower level. Perhaps there would be a way to make this piece reversible? Set it one way and it's stairs leading up, turn it over and it's stairs leading down?

6. An ornate main chamber/throne room/ tomb/treasury/whatever with tiled floors, columns and maybe a large stone box or vault. If the room decor were kept vague enough (instead of decorating with crosses or skulls or whatever) it could still be useful in both fantasy and sci fi games, as a tomb, throne room, treasure vault or whatever.

7. Some transition pieces like MyLordVoid suggested. Rough-hewn stone sections that slowly smoothed out to match the catacomb walls.

These Rough Hewn stone transition pieces could match with the cavern set, the dungeon sets, and even the sci fi sets. (Remember how the Rebel Base in Star Wars was built inside a Mayan-looking alien ruin? Or in the Stargate movie/TV show where there are alien corridors built inside Egyptian type pyramids? You could do that with the Sci-Fi sets and this Crypt/Catacomb set.)

[Actually, these rough-hewn transitions could also join up with a whole rough-hewn “Sewers/Mine Tunnels set. But that’s another idea for another time. ] :D

Sounds Kewl...

With regards to Idea One, this Might be a Good opportunity for DF to explore the Wider Corridor Concept without having "Too Much" of an impact on the Design of Current Sets... For instance if you Kind of Fused the Idea of the 4x4 Floor sections in the Cavern Sets, with the Various Passages, you could maybe have some "Chunky" 4x4 or even perhaps 4x6 Passages that would be sort of having an Identity Crisis as to rather they were true Corridors or rooms, The with a Couple of "End" pieces a Corridor could be nicely Ended... And if there was a Conversion piece down to the Traditional Corridor width, then a Couple of pieces of this set could be plopped down behind say a Secret door and Voila! Instant Family Crypt/ Vault whatever that would be just different enough from the Fantasy Stuff to Jump out atcha' you know?

In Idea three you mention Curtains/Sliding Panals... I'm thinking a Door way/Arch similar to the Sci-Fi doors in Design might be Kewl... Where the Panal/ Curtain could be dropped down into a Frame from above, (The Sci-Fi door design is DF's best to date in my opinion), then you could mix and match different "Types" of Doors (Including the Current Sci-Fi Doors or the Upcoming Sci-Fi force fields)...

In Refrence to Idea Four, I would love to see DF do some Large Doors Very Good Idea...

Item Five... Stairs would be Good... I Think they would need to be distinctive to pull off the Illusion... The Down leading would need to be set "In" the Floor... The Up could be separate pieces like the Fantasy are now? But Wider, and more to Scale I should hope...

And Six... Boy this Idea has been "The" debate for years... Originally DF used to include these "Surveys" in with their New sets... They asked a Bunch of R&D questions about the future DF release preferences of the Purchaser... With Questions about How much people would be willing to pay for specific types of sets and the Like... One Section dealt with Special "Rooms" (ala' Ogres Den)... And included Ideas for Throne Rooms, Libraries Etc... I Have always thought that it would be more useful to have Room Sets that offered some alternative Floor and Wall Types (Not to mention Kewl Accessories), which could be added to and switched around to come up with different layouts, but would still fit the overall "Dungeon" look of the Fantasy Stuff... That is the Approach I would want to see in this set as well... Mainly due to Cost... One of a kind Rooms are Very Kewl looking, but unless they are really Generic they would lose their "Usefulness" pretty quick, so to me having an add on Modular set that has a distinct look to it is more valuable... (For instance I Hated the Idea of Dropping $60.00 on the Ogres Den and avoided doing it for a couple of years, then Bought it one day when I "Needed" it... I discovered that I really liked it because it was just barely generic enough to use as anything from a Lair or One room Forest Cabin, to a Room in an Inn)... but overall I still think that it's usefulness is limited when you consider that it is a Tiny room (For my set-ups), and only has One entry point, for the same money I spent for whole other sets... Ok... So my Longwinded point (Sorry folks), is this, I Like the Idea of "Encounter/Objective rooms" being distinct from the rest of the Layout, but I get Worried when It is "Locked in" to one configuration... Just my Less than Humble Opinion...

So Overall I Really like the Idea for this set, and I think the Pictures Transit posted to illustrate the "Look" of this Concept were a very Nice Presentation Aid... And I would likely buy this set if it were available...

The idea of "wide corridors" is one that I'm exploring with my 4x4 sections - just slap on two walls on opposite sides and you have a section of corridor that is "half square+two squares+half square" wide. If you look at the picture in my "Progress report" in the Cool Photos section, you'll notice that the two sections closest to the sewer section are really two wide corridors. The one to the left has three walls with a door opening in one of them and the one to the right is a two-wall section, also with a door opening.

Thanks!

I have a lot of plans for a number of different things, but they have been put on temporary hold for a little while, as our recent wedding (Dec 30th) and lots of freelance work with a translation with a looming deadline has taken over most of my free time... But fear not! As soon as we're back from our wedding trip at the end of February I'll probably be so full of new ideas you wouldn't believe!

Why? you might ask... Well, if you're a dedicated dungeonbuilder a week-long cruise on the Nile is a good thing, don't you think? :D

We're flying from Stockholm to Hurghada on the 24th of February and return Thursday one week later. The cruise starts in Luxor and continues to Assuan, and then returns to Luxor. Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's temple, Assuan, lots of fabulous places...

Just to make you all _really_ envious, here's a link to the cruise ship company:

Check in on the Nile Pearl and imagine me and my wife Monica onboard that ship in a month! :D
