I just sent a concept to Stephan and Jeff about a modular roof system. I hope they like it enough to produce it.

Maybe we'll see it in MBS 3, or 4, or 5...

Stepfan and Jeff look at the system, and said they had similar ideas, but :

"Right now we don’t foresee doing any roofs, but when we do we will try to remember to get your feedback on our designs"
...
"Please feel free to post your ideas wherever you wish. Maybe it will lead to some more great feedback from other collectors!"

So here it is:

http://gaspe.cgaspesie.qc.ca/crioux/DF-Roof.php

And since they are not going to make roofs in the near future, I'll make some for my own use. I'll post pictures when I'm done. I'll be using the first system since it is easier to make and use, even if it is less modular.

Feel free to do the same. Any comments welcome

Crioux,

These are great ideas. If I had an MBS, I would really want this kind of roofing. What material did you use for the roofs in your example pictures? Where can that material be bought? Is it painted? I think the color goes great together with the MBS. I would like to use this roofing with my MM DF parts. Great ideas. Thanks.

The roof shown here was done a long time ago for something else than DF, and is not modular. The roof is made using Plastruct
I will make some new ones with Hirst Art molds I just ordered and make them modular. I'll post pictures when it's done.

crioux,

All BS and razzing aside, isn't HA going to produce roofs that are pretty thick for the scale? I ask this because I ahve some HA molds, and they result in some really heavy-duty panels.

Having said that, I also have to say that HA may well be the ONLY resin-mold alternative to custom designed, custom built, Plastruct roof systems. I used Plastruct on my castle roof, but the whole thing was done in Plastruct and Evergreen sheet, strip and pattern pieces. And it looks good (even with my crappy paint job!), but it was a one-shot deal; I can't use it for any other structure. Some of the guys at the IPMS chapter meeting here in town thought it might be a bit "over-engineered", but when I explained it was for gaming, with all the attendant rough handling, they understood.

I wonder if Plastruct could be used to make a mold master? If one of us did that, we could generate generic roof panels to build from; make them various sizes and design some kind of interlocking-tab method to secure panels together, maybe using trusses and supports?

Hmmm. . .

See ya!

Here are the first (unpainted) prototypes. They are reversible : one side is for MBS, and the other is stone.
I will make some other sizes, and some with windows

You simply have to put them side by side to cover your building. But for now, I have one ONE....

crioux;

DAMN that looks GOOD! I guess HA made a better mold than I thought they would for roofs. About the ONLY criticisms I would make are the joints between beam parts on the long beams, there at the bottom of the truss section of the half-timbered side; you might want to smoothe those out to look like ONE timber. And, MAYBE add a beam or timber along the angled side of the gable, to support the ends of the roof planking. Other than those, I don't see ANY errors, at all!

Uh, can I order some from you? Can you take plastic?

I think aesthetically, it looks FANTASTIC!

I, myself may eventually get to assembling some roofs but would intend to build larger sections of roof and using lighter materials -other than resin.

Considering I will often be stacking these on 2+ story buildings built of multiple, separate pieces of MBS, the increased size and the reduced weight at the top of the structures should both help to enhance the stability throughout such setups.

This design approach should also assist in limiting the amount of supports, the number and severity of "collapses" and allow for easy removal for internal viewing and gameplay as well.

These collapse factors are (most likely) more of a concern for me than most, as I almost always tend towards larger, complex and often "busy" builds and I will assume that future MBS builds will prove to be the same in this regard -if not more so.

I also believe that as a result, such large setups would move from being elaborate to "fragile" and that, I wouldn't find enjoyable while gaming at all!

Anyway, apart from my rant - I actually do think your roof looks great and I really hope my speculation is wrong, and that the design works very well for you.

This post was basically intended to state only why such a design would not be my preferred choice if DF were ever to produce one.

That being said I will be very interested to see (and hear) how well a larger set of these actually works for you in these regards -once they're built.

Good luck.

It was designed as proof-of-concept. It was casted using cheap Plaster or Paris. It is too fragile for everyday gameplay, and the finishing touches will be done on the final version. This is a test version.

I just finished the second module, which is different from my original plans.

I'll take pictures an post them soon.

Here are the pictures from the second module. I changed it a little from my original plans so it could be used to interconnect two roofs, since they have exactly the same shape. The Chimney is there to hold the module in place

crioux,

Those are starting to look really good!

I can't wait to see the finished versions.
