I agree 100% with the order of preference. But it might take a while until DF will produce a modular roof set. And I can understand when Crioux isn't too much in favour spending his time making roofs for the DF community. I know how I do this stuff. I love to test out a knew design and present it here.
Most often I then I sell off a second cast on E-Bay - partly to offset my own costs in material and other stuff but partly as well just to find out what people actually are willing to pay for my designs.
To actually make money I then would need to optimize the production process - but to be honest - I never really have the motivation to do this. I rather start a new project.

About Bruce making a mold - I doubt it - all the individual pieces are available already. Maybe I'm wrong here and he actually is making customized ones from existing stones if you ask him ?

This is the reason I came up with Castle Kits. I got the idea when I was making my Grand Stairways. The way I make them takes too much of my time. Making them from selfmade molds is probably breaching or close to breaching Bruce Hirsts rules. Offering the design to Castle Kits would mean that other could buy the stuff (probably cheaper as when I sell it on E-Bay) while Bruce gets a small cut as well and having my name associated with it would be enough for me.

Well - this is up to Crioux. Just my personal reasoning behind.

I MIGHT sell a limited number of kits, for a minimal fee (covering cost of material and shipping), Some assembly and paint required.
Except the 8 inches version cause to much silicon needed to make a mold.
But I personally hope that people will use the templates (coming soon, I ordered a new scanner!) and do it themselves.

I will ask Bruce Hirst first.

The molds I made did not come out as good as I expected, probably due to my lack of experience. Actually, only the 4 inches MBS version is not perfect, but the master was destroyed in the demolding, and I have no money to buy more silicone for now.

crioux,

Keep it up, bemoaning the cost of silicone, and you just MIGHT find a pair of jars on your doorstep one day. The only way to prevent that would be to not let ANYONE find out your address; we do have some charitable people here on the forums!
Be careful what you wish for; you just might get it.

See ya!

Here is the response from bruce:
"
You can make and sell up to $1000 worth of items without a license agreement, as long as it's clear that you're acting as a hobbyist and not as a business. This means that you cannot act using a business name, have an online shopping cart, or give the impression that you are in business. You can also only sell finished painted items, not bags of cast blocks or kits that others would assemble and paint. If you sell using the internet, you would need to put a statement on your web page or auctions that you are a hobbyist, making and selling items in your spare time.

You would not be allowed to sell molds of the items. I don't even allow my licensed people to sell molds - just casts from them. You can find this information and other legal stuff on my web page at www.hirstarts.com/legal/legal.html ."

So the ONLY way I can sell it legally is by making a complete set, assembled and painted. Which would requires a lot of time, especially the painting. So I'm not even sure if I will sell some, and IF I do, there won't be a lot of them, and I'll have to charge for the painting time... (unless I do a sloppy job, and you have to repaint them. :) )

I will respect Bruce legal things to the letter. I would not have been able to make such a nice prototype so fast without his products. Still I don't understand why they have to be painted ?

My preference would still be that you make your own.
Don't worry, the templates will come soon. I should have my scanner by the end of the week.

Can i get in on this action as well ;)

Silcon cost so freakin much. I have about 10-12 items that i have sculpted sitting around that i have never made molds for, becuase the Silicon and Resin are just so darned expensive. I was actually going to place an order last month untill i realized i only had 6 paychecks left in my current contract. So i am holding off any purchases ($200 after shipping and handeling) untill after April when i find out if i have a job come May. But darn i want to make some molds of this stuff.... So much so that over the last weekend i was doing some sculpting of more items in the "set"...

I might get the Resin becuase that is on'y about $60 but have to wait till Feb to get it.

crioux;

Bruce's legalese says you won't be getting that shipment of silicone. Darn it! But, there still may be some resin inbound, I dunno if you'd be willing to make 'em.

GS -

Did you use HA molds for your stuff as well? That will determine whether or not I order anything.

jkratzer That depends on the exact items you might be talking about.
I have made some of my own items and molds for those items, and i own some HA molds.

there are some items i sculpted/made myself that I made RTV molds for (the hive and the "living locations" walls, and floors i made some time back, the Wicked Cold Additions ie all of the ice in More Lava!, and the "Hive" items.
Those i hand made, and made molds of.

I do use HA as well, i have about all of the Sci-Fi Molds, and have access to Fieldstone Walls, and the Cracked Floor as well as the wizard Tower. I also bought the recent Cavern Floors, it makes the Lava rivers go Soooo much faster. I have also used HA to make items DF doesn't sell, or items that i want to customize and don't want to cut up or ruin a DF bit for like these.

Since i am single and have more room to set up all of the molds out at once to do the casting i tend to be the one who poors and casts the items, and actually in some cases hand them off to some one else to put together.
many of the Fantasy items that are rooms passages go to one of the players to put together, while the Sci-Fi and Caverns i have in my own right and play with to build things i like or want, like the lava, or Ice like Thod did.

So some of the stuff i use HA for, some is my own. you should be able to tell the difference, Bruces (HA) is much more professionally done for the cast items.

So depending on what you are asking yeah i use HA, but i also make/use my own stuff.

Here is a scan of the most important templates. Missing is the windows on the roof/connector, because it needs more work.
I realize that this is very crude but this is all you need. When I have more time, I'll post a complete tutorial. With these templates and the previous photos, I think anyone with Hirst Arts molds can make them. (molds #70 (fieldstone), #220 (planks), #230 (clay tiles) , and optionally either #250 (small bricks) or #40 (basic) for the base of the medieval side. They have to be sanded to remove the details, so heavy cardboard should do. It's just that plaster is easy to sand to make adjustments, not cardboard

The width of the roof pieces is 2 inches, to match DF modules. By chance, the width of the Clay tiles roof mold from Hirst Arts, is also 2 inches

Use dental plaster or better. Plaster of Paris is too fragile. Pieces breaks when handling them, and they pieces wouldn't survive gameplay.

note: Always use the very same template when measuring. Don't make a few and use different ones. Just the width of the scisor repeated over a few templates is enough so your roofs won't fit together.

As to the qualification of being painted...there's painted and then there's painted. A quick spray primer job and a "bigger the blob the better the job" overcoat in basic light colors with very thin paint and no highlights or shading would make the time invested in painting minimal....Anyone who didn't care for the provided paintjob would then have the bits required for finishing to personal taste.
