I suppose it could be taken as a measure of the success of the website, but the DF Forums have become a target of Spam-Bots and randomly placed advertising links.

Does anybody have any suggestions as to how we might address this problem? So we don't have to look at a thread that's just a front door for discount Rx drugs, or other less savory sites.

My thought is to monitor the number of links, and/or to monitor the number of postings a particular user has made. I will admit that I know NOTHING about coding a website, so these ideas may not be possible, but here they are anyway.

The first one is simple -- any new thread that contains more than one link in the first post is automatically deleted. (Or possibly put into an "invisible box" of some kind for review by the moderator, but I'm actually trying to reduce his workload.) This would allow legitimate forum-goers to start a thread about a cool new website, or a link to a product or picture, but these idiots who come in and put up three dozen links to porn sites would find themselves stymied. It would also allow us to respond to a question with links to appropriate sites, as the subsequent posts would allow multiple links.

The second one also seems kind of simple, but more restrictive on us. Establish a "newbie" membership status and don't let them post links at all -- if they try to put a link in their post, it is automatically deleted. Once a new member has posted three or five times, they get full link-posting priveleges. My hope is that the spam-bots aren't smart enough to realize that their attempts are unsuccessful, and that a human ad-spammer will give up. (Note that a deleted post should NOT count towards the number of posts necessary to get full status.)

Do these ideas make sense? Do they tickle other, better thoughts from someone who knows more about websites than I do?

Another possibility is to give some of the very active old-timers limited admin privledges on the forums so they can delete Spam too.

I think the way this is typically handeled is in becoming a member, you either have to do one of those little codes (ie input the same one that's next to the type box area) or e-mail confirmation/validation of new members.

Ghengis--that's probably the best preventative measure at this point--make the registrant type the letters/numbers they see on an image (since images can't be manipulated unless the site is hacked) into a security box on registration.

jackattack--limiting the number of links sort of kills the joy of using the site for many of us who like to contribute links to refer to. It's hard to isolate specific users (i.e. "new" users) for something like this. You'd have to write in a bunch of new scripts into the system and it's probably just not worth it.

The scripts or "bots" that are being used to create bogus accounts on forums like this are pretty clever, but they can be pretty much stopped on the spot with varous add-ons to the package that these boards are made from.

A friend of mine that runs a really popular, successful forum in our local home town uses something called "phpBB Security." It actively works to prevent php (scripting) exploits. Once he installed that, the spam-bots dropped to 0 (ZERO) on his site for bogus registrations.

Speaking of inactive old timers, anyone know what happened to Yukon Cornelius?

I'm still alive. I've just been in lurker-mode for a while now. Life has been hectic, chasing after my one year-old, switching jobs, and trying to focus on my writing career (which is finally taking off!) I just haven't had as much time for gaming stuff. But I'm still collecting and following the previews of the new sets (show us an unblurred arch, Stefan!) and setups you guys have been posting. I can't wait for the new cavernous water sets!

Whatever measures are available and accessible, please institute them soon. The spam is getting progressively ickier.

Jeff and Company,

Many o fus in the forum are technical/engineers or were in a past life. I agree with us trying to get rid of the spam. Would it help if hte user community volunteered to help resolve the issue? I am sure you would find enough help.

<<< BUMP >>>

... just to keep this on everone's (especially our hosts) front burner ....

The incessant invasion of forum spam has gotten pretty regular and revolting.

Can something be done sooner rather than later ??

Agreed. I am not sure why there is such a sudden increase, I've been deleting 3-4 messages a day now.....

Captcha (what you call code entering) is of no use on most , because the bots enter the spam directly into to database. On my blog, I have to delete almost hundreds of spam a day, even after installing a Captcha.

Franckly, I don't know what to do, and we are lucky to have only a few per day here.
