Celtcheif,

You pretty much hit it right on the nose there. While I wish we could keep it in stock, as well as all the individual pieces like stairs, barrels, etc...it definitely keeps too much capital wrapped up for years and years...We don't have the luxury of ordering 20 stairs from a factory in China that is used to pumping out 50,000 pieces at a time...we usually have to hassle them to accomodate us and make ONLY a couple hundred...Well, sometimes we can do that, but only if it is a popular product. (like stairs) Gone are the days when we used to offer EVERY single piece individually...and not just because of the huge tie up in capital...but also the space and confusion it causes at the warehouse...Now that we are trimmed down we are able to come out 3-4 times as fast with new products.
Isn't that worth it? Just make sure you get enough of the DOE sets while they are available and it's all good. I'm definitely making sure for myself;)

Stefan.

THere is some debate about DoE being a limited production.

I may be assuming here, but I think doing limited sets and discontinuing other sets is very normal in any hobby industry. There is a law of diminishing returns when it comes to collectibles, and if DF kept everything it ever made in stock on the off chance that it MIGHT sell 100 of them next year, then DF would have too much inventory and not enough cash. DF can't order a small amount of anything when they run out...so let's say they kept DoE around. They order 1000 more sets. By the time the 1500 original are gone, 90 percent of the people who wanted DoE when it came out will have it, the rest may pick them up at some time. Newbies will purchase DoE sets, but not quickly, maybe over years. Meanwhile DF took the capital it could have used to make new sets for the fan base and has it tied up in stock sitting in a warehouse.

I think this limited ed. approach for "risky" sets is perfect. It rewards the longtime DF fans. As for "hurting newbies"... hey, I used to collect stamps, I'm not going to able to ask the post office to reissue a new batch of elvis stamps just because I missed the batch... they are not going to do it. SHould I feel like I am turned away from the velvet rope....

Well, I think you are right, don't get me wrong but there are two different things here. One thing is that (We all know) you can't order to the factory to have always DoE in stock, but, if it is a LE, then, not only you cannot have it in stock. Simply it will disappear. If it is not LE, well, ok, we all know that there will be the usual restrictions to have it in stock, but it won't have gone forever.

In many Ways the LE issue is Really a Minor thing in that it Does allow those "Frequent Flyers" the Opportunity to Get a Kewl "New" Set... While if it Does Well DF will Likely Continue to Support it with Variant Releases... Stefan (Or Maybe it was Jeff), already Stated that the Molds for DoE are Gone...(Destroyed), so it will NOT be Reproduced...

However, In Reference to its Current Popularity there has already been Discussion about Alternate Versions, Add-ons Etc... So Even if Someone "Missed the Boat" on the LE of 1500 DoE, there is Still at least the Potential for a New Collector to Get Future Useful DoE pieces... OR because of the Kewl Factor on the LE perhaps Future Collectors Will Jump Quickly Were a Future LE (Of Whatever Set) to be Released...

Certainly there are Still Plenty of Good DF Sets available Now or In the Restocked near Future to Make DF a Viable Gaming Tool for Anyone Who is Just Now Discovering this Great Product...

AND Stefan has NOT said that ALL Future releases Would be LE either, so perhaps the Occasional Pre-order Collectors Item will Give DF the Financial Shot in the Arm that it Requires to Keep Production Going on New as well as Staple Sets like the MM Room and Passage Sets and the Like?

This is so interesting to hear that some people do not want to keep certain sets, such as DoE, limited at all and have it available all the time. Overall, the market for DF is not great. It is already hard to get people interested in DF because no one wants to dump a sum of money to start. Even in this forum, other than a few regular, I dont believe there are that many diehard fans who want to own every piece DF have made. It makes me throw up to hear that they will sorry for those who miss the opportunity. Fine, have DF produce more limited edition set and see how long you can keep up buying.

I am Not Sure I Quite Understood this Point? Are you In Favor of Limited Edition Sets? Or Are You Saying that all DF Sets need to Remain Available? It Sounds like you are in Favor of DF Chooseing its own Destiny, and Letting those who miss a New Set (If LE) deal as best they can... But the Last Sentance Confused me a little...

Whoa, things seem to be getting misunderstood here. I don't think anyone was suggesting that DoE should be always available in massive amounts at all times. Where did you get that idea, Wildger?

It's not like there are only two options -- limited edition that never gets reprinted, or constantly kept in storage at the warehouse for unlimited purchases by rich insane people.

There's a third choice -- make 1500 now, sell them all. In a year -- get ready for the radical suggestion -- make a few more!

I wouldn't want to ruin the "limited" appeal of DoE by making more sets exactly like this one, but if demand is out there, why not make something similar for people who missed out?

That's why I suggested, a while ago, a poll on the DF website -- "Which LE set would you want us to bring back for a limited time?"

Lego did something like this, making a few OOP sets available on their website. I would think that this would solve a lot of problems:

1. No overhead involved for DF keeping sets unsold in warehouses -- they make a limited amount, sell them all, and they let sleeping dogs lie for a few years.

2. The set remains "limited" so long as the exact same set is NEVER re-released. The new set would not include all the same elements, maybe has a different paint job, etc.

3. There is SOMETHING re-issued for people who weren't around in 2005 to pick up the DoE before it went away.

I don't see why this would make anyone want to throw up. It seems to make sense to me.

Law,

This was Sort of What I Asked a While Back... But Stefan Stated in No Uncertain Terms that the Molds were Gone and that there would Never be a Re-release of that Exact Mold... So A Different Color/Paint Scheme is out unless Stefan Wants to Re-make the Old Molds...

That having Been Said, we have been pretty Much Assured I Think by the Good Response to the DoE set to date, that there will be "somthing" released in the Future...

Further, Since The Second Wave Orders Have Not Even Opened yet, I Think that it is Not Really Even an Issue at this point... I Do Not Know How many Sets are in Each Wave, but Clearly there are Plenty of Sets Available to Order, or at least there will be soon...

Well, I'm with L. Anyway I don't think what I say may be something that makes somebody to throw up.

But if SO, please do it OUT of the forum.

The second wave did open for orders already, I think on November 9, 2005. I placed an order from the second wave for a third set. However, they said there would be a third wave because the second wave was broken up into smaller portions (I think only 200 were made available with the second wave instead of the larger number in the first wave).

This set is absolutely amazing.

I'm a DM for years and use DF mainly for D&D and d20 Gaming. I see it as the masterpiece in DF's catalog. The detail is so fine and the modularity of the pieces so great it can recreate covens, evil dungeons, libraries, temples really well. It really is different in a much more "ancient" and/or "civilized" way that the classic Fantasy room sets. That's how it inspires me anyway.

I can not stress enough how I agree with the previous posters talking about:
1/ The way DoE needs to have follow-ups and not go completely out of print (the follow ups would have to be compatible with it of course)
2/ How a room set would be a formidable addition since we wouldn't need to "pile-up" on the passages. (They are TRULY great, but when you have two or three DoE R&P sets, you don't need the passages anymore. You still could feel you need more room pieces though).

Overall, a very well designed addition to the DF collection. A pleasure for the eyes, a marvel for gaming.

Keep up the fantastic job, folks. :D

...yes doe rules big time! i do not want to repeat all the stuff that was said before (i totally agree on almost all points) so i stick to those points not mentioned so much. i love the thinner look of the doe pieces. if you set them up with r&p pieces its really like coming out of a cold, moist, old basement into a luxury palace - its the perfect addition!
and to my absolut joy the floors have no btc gaps! thanks a bunch (if i succed with my curved pw - round room conversion i might be crazy enough to fill all btc gaps...maybe)

my wish for any upcoming doe sets would be a room set with lots of doors and an advanced builder set with:
str. p.w., dead ends, some platforms and lots of fancy stuff (mirror, thronex2, pillars, altar, fireplace, fire cauldron, long table, royal sleeping place, study desk etc.) not glued to floor pieces.
a nice special door (maybe a bouble) something that says: the doe starts here!

thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you

cant wait to get your next masterpiece!
