Hellscape Gate 1 Year, 6 Months ago
I realize I could have just put this in my regular Hellscape 2 review, but since these are all being sold separately, I thought it made sense to give it its own thread.

The gate really is impressive, as anyone who has seen pictures could tell you, but there are a few things that I didn't really notice until I'd spent some time with it.

First -- a small nitpick. The stones on the back are he not painted to match the traditional Master Maze flagstone design. They are just kinda dark grey, almost black. Now, maybe that makes sense for a dungeon in Hell, and maybe it matches the Catacombs set. (I wouldn't know . . . sniff sniff) BUT it doesn't work as a transition to the regular Master Maze, and that's a shame. Partly because that transition would be nice, but more importantly because the piece already HAS a stonework design to it, so why not just go ahead and match the colors?

The other thing I noticed is that the piece isn't really a gate INTO hell. From the way it's designed -- where the lava pool is, where the stonework is, etc. -- it's pretty clear that this is a gate to something ELSE in Hell. It's almost a gate OUT of hell, or at least out of the hellscape and into some other terrain. (yes, the floor is lava/hellscape on both sides, but the "back" of the Gate features stone walls and the "front" of the gate features the lava plumes)

In other words, the gate really is an entrance to some kind of fortress WITHIN the Hellscape. It wouldn't be a natural fit to have the Hellscape on the other side of the Gate. For one thing, you'd have these awkward lava plumes in the non-Hellscape realm, which would be odd. For another, you'd have stone walls on the INSIDE of the Hellscape realm, assuming the gate were facing the other way, and hence serving as an entrance.

Nope, it's pretty clear from the way the Gate is designed, it leads OUT of this realm. The only question is -- to WHAT?!?!

Is it possible that HS3(+) may include new pieces featuring the new stonework?

I think the following saying might be correct in this case....

"...Out of the fire, into the frying pan."

I am using it as a gateway to a temple in the 9th level....

Can you say welcome to my living room asmo.

Yes, I was wondering when someone would notice that:)

mwhhaaa...mmmwwhhaaa....

sinister isn't it....

Only Casey knows at this point where it leads....another dimension? A super evil lair? another level of Hell? many gruesome possibilities to be discovered by the players?

Some very detailed points made by Law and in general I agree with them all. I have bought both HellScape sets and most of the individual pieces, but decided against buying this piece as I could not (at this time) see how I would use it in a DF dungeon.

Don't get me wrong - I am all for 'doors' and 'entrances' and love the 'transition' pieces. (Would love to see every possible set/theme combination!)

Reading that this has been very deliberately designed to look as it does remind me that Stefan and all DF peeps know what they are doing!

I will wait (before buying) until I see what can be on 'the other side' of this gate in hell that leads to a worse hell or something sinister / smokey / darker.

There is also another sinister possibility and reality....the
Hellgate might actually not be designed to keep people out....rather it has been designed that way because it's designed to keep people in......mwhaa...mwhaaaa....

just got my hellgate today. very nice piece. The chain on one side got wrapped the wrong way on one side during shipping- i had to hold it upside down and fiddle with it to get the two chains set the same way.

the winch is a very interesting bit, being just so slightly uneven as to give a certain more rugged or primitive look to the gate mechanism.
