TOPIC: Ice Caverns!
#43839
Ice Caverns! 2 Years, 7 Months ago
So I got my Ice Caverns set! Woot! I had to restrict myself to just one, given other expenses and issues right now, so no special piece for me. Still, here are my thoughts on the basic set:

There is, as has been predicted (and outright stated by Jeff and Stefan) more clear resin than the pics might lead you to believe. Just to be totally clear, the only two pieces that are strict "repaints" with no clear "ice" are the dead-end piece and the S-shaped tunnel transition-to-dungeon piece.

As for the remaining elements:

- The floors have clear resin pools that take up approximately 50% of the surface area. It's not deep, but it gives the impression of ice -- just what you want to establish shaky footing.

- The one piece the pics DO show very clearly is the cavernous opening transition-to-dungeon piece, which has the full ice over the entrance as well as pooled ice on the floor.

- The S-shaped corner piece has a large pool of ice on the interior of its curve, plus several icicle stalagmites.

- The regular corner piece has a large pool of ice blossoming out from the frozen "waterfall" ice that forms its center. (Note to Stefan -- we need an ice cavern floor that can go on the other side of the corner, so that players can "smash" the ice and move through to the terrain on the other side!) There are also two distinct icicle formations hanging on the wall at either end.

- The straight wall has a large pool of ice as well as two distinct icicle formations on the wall.

OK, so that gets THAT out of the way.

Ultimately, it all matters a lot less than you'd think. Looking at this, it doesn't seem like something you already own (assuming you have the cavern sets). It looks like a wintry enviroment, the shades of blue fit perfectly with the white, and the general impression is of an icy cavern. All the details you want to see from DF remain, and the set does represent a welome expansion into icy environments. It's a really good companion to the Hellscape's lava world. (actually, come to think of it, given how many Hellworlds are more ice than fire, this would be a phenomenal home to ice demons etc. It would also be great to pair with Hellscape, and DoE for that matter, for a multi-planar expedition to the deepest levels of Hell...

Thanks for the summary, Law. I was wondering when someone was going to do an owner's perspective of the set. No surprise, but it sounds like its a well done set. And as is often the case with DF, pictures are cool, but they just don't compare to seeing it all in person.

My current campaign will (someday) lead my players into the far northern reaches of the Forgotten Realms, so this set is exactly what I'll need...eventually. (insert complaint about having no time to game and very little money to buy cool new stuff here)

Looking forward to see some builds from the members of the board!

Re:Ice Caverns! 2 Years, 7 Months ago
I'll be getting pics up ASAP -- it's tough to find the time with two young kids who don't go to bed until 8. When they're a little older, they can join Daddy in his DF fun, but right now they are a bit too young (3 and 1 1/2).

Meanwhile, I'm already brainstorming suggestions for an Ice Caverns Accessory set (or just an Ice Accessory set, for greater flexibility)

- Any number of elements from the Chasm Set would be fantastic. The triangular floor pieces to fill out the curved corner wall would make the ice barrier in that wall a lot more useful, since it would actually serve as a barrier to a playable space. But also the ledges that make it more aesthetically pleasing to stack up higher levels of caverns.

- While we're on the subject of reissuing other elements in Winter Style, I'd love the hanging stalagmite wall from the Cavernous River set done in this style. Clear resin would be idea, of course, but however -- that's just such a phenomenally useful and attractive piece, I want it for my ice cave.

- I'd love something with shattered ice -- maybe a few chunks of what would have been a free-standing wall? So you can have an implication that this environment is currently inhabited, and that whatever lives here has recently smashed a shortcut through something. Or just taken out its temper on something. Either way, smashed up jagged ice would be great.

- A larger pool, naturally. Something like a floor base with a 6" x 6" footprint, with a cracked ice pool in the middle. Probably isn't a good idea to do a whole "cavernous lake" in ice, but just a hint of it would be awesome.

- An ice bridge would be awesome, too - either something artificial, or something natural (perhaps based on the rock formations in the chasm set?)

That's all I can think of for now. Obviously, some people really want to see the ice theme move out of caverns entirely, but personally I'm not entirely sure what that would look like. Having other DF structures done as though they were built out of ice doesn't really thrill me, and I'm not sure how naturally forming ice would look in the context of the other sets. But other people who have things they'd like to see might be able to get me on board!

Thank you for your feedback on this set.
However I'm still not convinced at all.
The cavern pieces are too much similar to the cavern set ones.
I understand the idea to get a normal cavern frozen but it looks like a total lack of creativity to my eyes. (don't take it bad Stefan it's my point of view)
The magic doesn't work on me and I will completely forget this set forever. I really was waiting for something strong and fascinating not just a 90% copy of the same pieces "frozen".
But when I see the photo of the hellscape II you just have posted, I suddenly recall the reasons why I became a DF fan : something somptuous & catchy for the eyes, something I ever dreamt about. You can be sure I'll be a customer on this one !

Man HGF, I can appreciate your frankness - and you are certainly entitled to whatever opinion you might have, and certainty entitled to post it, but by the howling winds of pandemonium your post are frequently huge downers!!

Discounting it entirely because they aren't all new pieces is more than a bit harsh. Woodlands, Woodlands Accessories, Icy Cavern and Hellscape 2 in development. I think that is a rather hefty load of work and deserving of some applause.

The frozen floors, icy resin and other detailed touches/differences make this, if nothing else, a *very* nice conversion. Not everyone is capable/skilled/willing to modify existing items or make entirely new ones like yourself. I've seen how much single conversion pieces sell for. Considering my campaign's current wintery locale, this was a steal full of win in my book.

Stefan is right, the pictures don't do the pieces justice due to the very light colors. The only thing I can say regarding that is that multiple angled, high res, views of each piece would go a long way. That goes for all of the sets. There are some details I just didn't notice on the website but absolutely loved about the Den of Evil & RotA sets once I had them in my hands and could inspect them.

I hope some Icy Wicked Additions eventually get made. There is certainly room for growth in that direction.

My only request/criticism is that it would have been very cool and incredibly functional if the clear ice blocks in the curved corner pieces could have been removable.

That being said, I am very pleased with my purchase and look forward to putting them to use on Wednesday.

They sound cranky and a bit snarky sometimes but thanks for always being brutaly honest HGF, I knew there was a reason I liked you.

I have to say I wasnt blown away by the original pictures but I'm liking the set more now that I see the ice floors.

Hmmm...well...sales are very good so far...considering nobody is ordering from overseas as they are waiting for the EU shipment to arrive...I understand the criticism from HeroQuest, it's fine. But at this point sales are probably going to be good enough for us to think about an Ice Cavern 2 or Ice Cavern Accessorie set...such a set would indeed include completely original sculptures which alongside these one's would be pretty awesome...I'm actually pretty excited that these are selling well, because we have lots of kool ideas to expand on these Icy realms...some freestanding Ice columns like L has made are a must...Icy bridges, smashed area's, all great idea's...keep them coming!

While you are developing the expansions, I hope you will look at things like free-standing items as expansions for not only the Ice Caverns line, but for DF products in general. That means making some items with an eye towards being put down in any DF environment.

Some items don't need to be built on a 4x4 frosty tile. Ice columns are a good example. The freestanding row of stalagmites and stalactites should convert nicely as a wall of ice. The ice bridge could be done so that it can be turned on its side as another wall of ice.

With enough "universal" ice accessories, they can be packaged as an accessory pack or a Wicked Addition set. They can then be marketed as both an expansion of the IC line AND as props for spell effects, elemental abilities, and breath weapons.
