Ruins! 4 Years, 1 Month ago
Well, there's a lot to love about the new ruins set. I think it's a very well designed set, maximally efficient, with just enough pieces for every need, and nothing really superfluous, so the more you buy, the more useful it is, and you won't end up stockpiling bits that you don't need in larger numbers. You get just want you want to create one small ruined room, or to add ruins to a small regular room to make it more "chunky and funky," as it were.

I really like the free ruin pieces, that can either fill in the walls or can stand on their own. My initial reaction was "But we already have regular walls, why do we need this?" but then I thought about how cool it would be for purposes of showing battle damage or shifting terrain. It could be an awesome trap for players -- walking in a line down a corridor, someone in the front triggers a trap that causes a wall to collapse on the back of the line. Oops! Particularly nasty if that's where you have your ranged fighters, as you're supposed to -- because then something narsty can leap out and the party will have to face it without the advantage of their missile firing members! Ah-ha ha ha ha!

The combined effect of the pieces placed on a regular dungeon setup is truly outrageous -- I've tried to show it off in the pics I've posted, but if I had more time and room I could do a much better job (and I'll get to it, I promise!) The result is that a dungeon setup goes from being a three-dimensional MAP to a really fully-realized diorama. Instead of feeling like you're looking at a representation of a space, albeit a very detailed one, you actually feel like you're looking at a movie set or something. It creates the most wonderful effects. (One picture I've taken but haven't posted yet - a two-level setup where the bottom floor ruin slopes up to the top floor ruin so you get a long, unbroken diagonal from the table level up to essentially a third-floor wall (standing alone). It gives the impression of a very large, crumbling structure. Very visually gripping.

My only request for a Ruins 2 so far would be to include free-standing ruin piles of two different varieties:

1) Like the current walls, but flat on one side, so you can always easily continue the ruin effect by placing just the wall next to wherever you want: a regular wall piece, a corner, whatever. It isn't always easy to use the full-on wall pieces. Sometimes they aren't oriented the right way, sometimes it just doesn't fit the design you're using. Free-standing walls would give much more flexibility -- and could be combined on their own, etc, or left as rubble. Just taking this great idea one step farther.

2) Some ruin piles that don't "connect" or line up with the walls at all. Just loose rubble. That would be really great to have.

Ruins being what they are, there are always great things to be done, completely unanticipated creative moments. But as far as what the logic of the set would lead to, that's the only thing I can come up with. I suppose the other obvious extension would be ruined versions of things we've already seen -- a ruined mermaid fountain, cracked and broken red columns, ruined spiral stairs, etc. All of that would be AWESOME.

Really loving the ruins -- this is exactly what I wanted to see to refocus attention on the line that started it all. To be honest, I think this may be a cooler set than WA3. It could be just that I've wanted something like this for SO long, though...

I've got three Ruins on order so can't wait!!!

Steff/Geoff - have the ruins done o.k. regarding anticipated sales? I guess what I am asking is do you think a Ruins II is on the cards sometime?

Hey L,

Thanks for the review. How many sets would you say is the sweet spot? I usually buy 3 sets to get the bonus bits, but I wasn't totally sold on the nest and have been quite broke of late. I'm thinking of getting 2 sets. Think that'll be enough for a big-ish setup?

We have plans for a Ruins 2 set, but we don't know right now when it will be produced. I think the fact that this was not a limited-edition set makes it less of a "gotta have it now" set. I do think it will sell well over many years as people are now finding out how useful the pieces can be.

So far...the reviews have been excellent, and I can't wait to see the awesome pics you guys can provide.

Translation: It hasn't been a great seller...the Wicked 3 perhaps looks to be a blockbuster though....just my hunch...

We may experience a sort of lag in Sets over the next 6 months as the creation mill was slowed due to many difficult personal events, some of which are ongoing...but 2011-2012 ought to be really great I think, as I myself should be more focused again...at the moment I actually have no studio where I can work...all my things were hijacked by a Con Artist posing as a cross country shipper...imagine, all your Dwarven Forge and thousands of painted/unpainted miniatures amassed over a lifetime being kidnapped....(I didn't even care about my furniture)it was HELL guys! After much anguish and Law Enforcment+Private Investigator(Vinny Parco) I was able to trick the individual in returning my Life's work, including all my Artwork...

Hurray!

there is a light...

But I do think that the Ruins will sell well in the end....it's like the narrow passage or the advanced builder...takes time to warm up to...more pictures will definitely help, Thanks Law!!

That surprises me --I'd've thought that Ruins would hit the ground running.

I hope that doesn't preclude a Ruins II Set down the line. Maybe when there are more pieces/options the sets will find their audience?

I haven't ordered my Ruins yet, but I don't have an address to deliver to right now.

Pretty dart news about the shipper, Stefan! Very glad you got everything back. Speaking for me personally, I really like the idea of the ruins set, but with 12 sets, I'm running out of room! I've got to be very selective at this point, and I'm holding out for Wicked Additions. Incidentally, it's much easier for me to find room for individual pieces, so I'm excited whenever I see more coming in stock.

Wow, sorry to hear about what sounds like a really bad stretch for you, Stefan!

I'm a little surprised that Ruins isn't selling more, myself. Maybe the attention spent on "flashier" environments like Hellscape and ROTA have made dungeon settings seem a bit less exciting to people? They'd be wrong -- I think Ruins really lends some flash and style to the dungeon setting, maybe more than any other dungeon expansion ever. It really makes for some visually stunning arrangements.

I do think it will pick up -- it will probably be one of those workhorses, something that sells regularly along with the basic sets.

Wow - real life adventure Stefan...glad it turned out with you *winning* in the end! What did the shipper think he was going to do with all your art and stuff? I'm sure its an incredibly beautiful and amazing collection (and irreplaceable!), but how was the guy going to make any money on it? Its not like its diamonds or drugs or cash or something - what the heck was he going to do with it all?

Shame about it not being a big seller. Like many of the other posters here have said, I suspect it will be a "long, slow burn" of a set because of its sheer versatility. An alternative theory might be that the economy both sides of the pond isn't great and a lot of people are scared about their jobs (or have lost them!). This is bound to have some impact on the high end gaming deluxe terrain market?

Sorry to hear about all the bad things that have been happening to you. As one gamer to another I would like to reflect the wisdom of another gamer friend of mine here who has recently been through some similar personal difficulties - "No matter what happens there's always role playing!"

We are all looking forward to things settling down for you so that you can find the time to get creative again.

All the best
