Ghengis Ska,

Here ya Go a Post For Sci-Fi! They're Really Great Pieces... Though I Have Not Purchased any Passages, the Starter is Mucho Kewl... Better then I Thought (I Want SEVERAL more), and I have an Alpha on Order... And Let me Say, though in too few quantities, the Triangular Floor Pieces are a MUST have... The Doors are Awesome too... and I Love that there are No Bow-ties to worry about rather I am Going to use or not...<Grin>...

Hm.. I voted for "alpha" but I don't know, it's tough to say this early.

The Starter Set, as cool as it is, is also just the basics. It gives you the setting, and it's really well done, but once various expansions start showing up, the starter set is going to look like just the backdrop for really cool stuff. I think the "really cool stuff" is going to be what most of us consider our favorite sets.

So -- the Starter Set is really great, but I also think for now the Alpha set gives you everything cool about the starter -- the great floor design, the cool wires etc. -- but also more distinctive pieces.

The only one that isn't really a candidate for me is the passage set. I'm biased against passages, as I've said many times, plus this set is basically five $10 pieces, and I don't love any of them enough that I'd buy them for $10 each.

So -- kinda a tie between Starter and Alpha right now, but with an eye on the future I think with time the Starter set is not really a "favorite" more of a "good basic set that you need a lot of in order to use all the really cool pieces from the expansions"

Law,

I Think the Kewl Thing about the Alpha (Still pending my actual Receiving of it of Course), Will be that there are a Couple of Kewl bits Like the Hatches or even the Floors that Could get tossed into a Dungeon, so without owning any Other Sci-Fi set it Could be Useful... (If You Go in for that Kinda' Kinky Cross-Genre Gaming...<Smirk>...)

And Where did Ghengis Go? Ska Wars Asked for this Thread...<Chuckle>...

I wanted to take the time to properly evaluate the sets, and get some other peoples opinions on them.

I brought them to my SWRPG group (now that i have enough to try to set something up) and let them and the guy i play SW minis with the most, run through them.

This is my first foray into DF.
While i have played D&D for over 20 years and seen the DF Fantasy sets, i have never bought any of the big pieces. I have over the years bought some of the individual scenery things like the table and chairs etc to use a dressing and have very much enjoyed those. But there is very little for the Sci Fi market. Yes Companies like Anisty, Grednal, Armorcast and a few others make Sci-Fi scenery and props i never really got into them, i would randomly by a bit here and there, but never got into it that much for some reason. Having seen the Quality of DF products over the years, and seen their commintment to producing items for their Fantasy line, and that coupled with the SW minis from WotC got me seriously looking at the Sci-Fi sets.

Starter Set
As a starter set this is exactly what you get, a good start. There is enough here to set up a decent sized room, and a little bit of connection from that room to the out side passage ways. At first i was wowed by the cheaper price over the Fantasy sets, but you get less than the fantasy sets (or at least the sets of old) so the price to get the same amount of building material is about the same. I don't have a problem with that. I can now get sets every now and then when i have the spare cash. So while you get a little less, it is easier to get it on a more regular basis.

The quality of the materials is great. For your hard earned cash you get a very good value. As i mentioned before i have looked at other stuff by other comapnies and the cost of the DF Sci Pieces is well worth it, it is comaprable if not better valued by the fact that you don't have to paint it. One of the reason i love both the new SW and D&D minis is they are pre painted. So is the Sci-fi form DF. But for those who want to paint there should really be nothing stopping you from touching up or even redoing a piece or two.

As i mentioned earlier they are solid and well done, the pieces are sturdy and solid so it does not fall over easily, the felt on the botom provides enough traction on most surfaces so that they stay in place with out the bow-tie connectors. The pieces are sturdy enough to survive decent jostling even when not packed in their styrofoam trays.

The peices when set up side by side look good, by that i mean carefull or upclose inspection is required to show that they are multiple individual items or pieces and not large one. This is very true of the floors and The only ones that are some what easy to tell are the triangle 1/2 pieces, which can be put together in a pinch to make a new floor section.

Multiple Stater sets are required however if one wants to set up large Complexs or multiple rooms at one time. While not a draw back something to consider, you won't be able to do an Imperial base or Death Star Detention center unless you get a few sets.

Passages Set

The passages set has the same quality as the Starter set and is good, my only complaint with it is the lack of longer passage sections. The two short sections 2x2 are nice and can provide some spacing, but in an RPG setting can be a detraction im my mind becuase it does not provide large areas between different rooms, a few longer sections would make up for that and allow for more sprawling complexes. This way they seem very cramped. While i like this set and the multiple junction pieces you get with it i would have prefered a long section as well.

But from the pictures i have seen in the next(?) set they will have long passage sections and will be a set i will definatly get. The long sections can allow for some sprawl and making room suites inside areas easier, with out having to use multiple small straight sections.

Alpha
The Alpha set is very nice, the large floor sections allow for some decent open areas. The dual nature of the floors is great so that one can make a large floor or add intrest and scenery to the rooms as well, the pipes and vents etc within the floors allow for story elements, in skirmish or RPG or just decoration to give the room some flair. The added items like ramps, pillars and tube sections also allow for some great scenery and options for story elements or skirmish objectives. Reinforcements coming up the ladders into the room etc, must reach the ladder to the next level down...

The Alpha set also, I hope, shows that DF is going to continue the line. While the Starter and Passage sets could be widely usefull in a number of games, from Space Hulk, travler, SW RPG and Minis to any Sci-Fi setting it could have stopped there. The Alpha set and the proposed Beta set which just looks better and better give me hopes that the line will continue and be as strong as the Fantasy. DF really has a chance to get into an areas that i think has not, been over looked, but perhaps seen as not as needed. Sci-fi terrain, many companies make Fantasy based sets but few make Sci fi, and much of the Sci fi made has been geared more to Skirmish and wargame materail. the DF-Sci-Fi sets to me look like one of the best for good RPG as well as value in the other areas.

GhengisSka,

Nicely Done... I Liked your evaluations on the Sets that have come out so far, and I hope that you are right about this being a "Sign" of what we might expect in the Future... The Only thing that I would add, (In Case someone were reading this that has not Purchased these Sets yet), is that I Can not emphasize enough the significance of the edges of the floor sections being soo Detailed. With the MM (Now know as Fantasy), Floors although there is a sort of "Dirt" Colored Layer beneath the Flag Stone, there is an obvious "Out of place" look to the floors when they are stacked, with the Sci-Fi floors the attention that went into detailing the edges of the Floor Pieces make them Hugely more attractive stacked on top of one another, 1/2 triangles in Corners to add dimension, a 2" floor placed in the Center of a Room as a Command Platform etc... These are simple, nice effects that distinguish the Sci-Fi Pieces...

I agree, I love that -- some of my pics, I believe, tried to highlight that (maybe I never put those online, now that I think about it) You can get great "tiered" effects, make rooms with different levels, it looks fantastic.

GS -- great review! Very glad to hear you are happy with the sets, I'm hoping this catches on amongst the SW gaming crew. (for one thing, it makes it more likely that we'll see more expansions) I got into the sci-fi sets with the same thought -- there really isn't anything like this for the SF market. For fantasy, you have the MK stuff, you have the Hirst Arts stuff, you have various sorts of fantasy scenery relatively easy to find. But with SF, it's really few and far between, and really nobody makes a basic setting like this. You get accessories, and with Hirst Arts you can sort of make something vaguely appropriate, but this is ultimately a unique product, and fills a real hole in the marketplace.

I can't wait to see what comes out in expansion Gamma!

I suppose what I'd like to see most in Gamma and Delta expansions would be:

long wall pieces -- both regular, to get more use out of big floor pieces (following the pattern of the fantasy sets) and also some special ones (again, like the mermaid fountain and the demon arch) with funky things like a viewscreen or computer bank or other various decos on them.

floor-mounted console -- like that big round map the rebels watch at the end of Star Wars, when Leia and the generals are following the Death Star battle.

furniture! -- tables, chairs, beds/bunks, storage lockers/chests -- either fancy-shmancy to look like the HQ, or portable (folding-style table and cheap-looking chairs) to suggest on-the-fly recon stuff.

engine stuff -- useful either as a power generator (for non-moving locales) or engines (for, duh, the moving kind!) Could either be a free-standing piece like the consoles, or attached to floors or walls. Either way, it'd be neat. For now, the columns are a fine proxy, but I want more!

battle damage -- this is not a high priority for me, it's something for five or six expansions down the line, since I think for now we just need more "basic" stuff, but ultimately I'd love to see a battle damage set, kinda like the new fantasy floor set -- exotic stuff to spice up displays. Mainly wall pieces, with a few floors, damaged in various ways -- melting acid, explosion debris, carved with talons, the ever popular bullet and blast holes and marks.

All that, plus I'd love to see various traditional sci-fi decos, like the black-and-yellow stripes marking the "no walk" edges of things, the biohazard symbol, and the ever-popular alien languages and tiny "CAUTION" and "WARNING" and "STEP DOWN" type markings. Love to see those on doors, walls, floors, whatever. Maybe a decal sheet so we can customize our own.

Law,

Yup... Yup... Yup... Not One thing On Your List that Would Not Be Awesome... As to Decals... There are Great Decals available in Old Helicopter or Airplane Models, which Tend to Be Cheap on the "Discounts" Tables at many Hobby Stores... And Battle Damage would be Great For Both MM and Sci-Fi... And I Know I Said this Before, but One There are a Few different Genre' out there I would Really hope to see a Set of Conversion Pieces in the tradition of the Fine Examples in the Caverns... But from Say Sci-Fi to Dungeon, Sci-Fi to Cavern Etc...

I actually have a complaint about the set... and it is an odd one.

the passages pieces have a minor problem with them, that i will try to explain. After looking at Some of Tom's Fantasy pictures, this one in particular
The Fantasy + section can be used to make inside walls for a room. When i was making my set up i wanted to try something like that, and i ran into a problem, the Collumn, with the blue top on it makes it so that you can't bring a floor section un next to the corner. The collumn goes flush to the base. If it were possible to put a floor section next to it you could get more funxtionality out of it as making it into a room piece easier. I am guessing the reason it was done that way was for a flush effect, but i was so insored by Tom's pictures i wanted to do something like that with it, (the lower right corner kind of with the lava room, or even the other one on the other side) The Sci-fi big collumn makes it so it doesn't quit work... :(

Maybe a special corner piece in a future set, and maybe some odd sized pieces to fill in areas like that?
