I picked up some new straight HS walls, and I have to say, they RADICALLY alter the experience. Until now I've only had one set and some extra floors, and while the free-floating walls give you some ways to bound the set with the floor pieces, the wavy wall makes a huge difference in the look and feel of a layout. Various combinations and ways of placing it give radically funky, organic shapes, it's very different from just placing a straight wall along the side of a floor piece.

For people thinking of doing large landscapes, I highly recommend grabbing at least 1 extra wall for every set you get -- if not more. It makes all the difference, and it really seems like this is how HS is meant to look. Makes it much more flexible, much more interesting -- there are just, simply put, far more ways to use the pieces to create settings which look noticeably different from one another.

Post some pics, please. I only got the HS sets but not the HS Straight Walls so I would like to see how much of a difference it would make.

Thanks!

You make an excellent point L.

I'll be sure to get some of the wall pieces on my next order -provided there are also some floor pieces available (to fill out the caverns as well).

Thanks for the suggestion.

Doh!

I only scored extra floor prices as I didn't like/understand the wall pieces. Looks like I'll be needed to place another order soon. Wasn't there something new/different/special coming out this December?

The bonus-for-3x-purchase Well of Sin comes out for individual sale in March.

I think the RotA2 bonus-for-3x-purchase Entrance comes out for individual sale in December.

I just recently received my Hellscape set and am impressed most of all with the sculpt work that has been done on it. Even the back walls of the pieces (the part that characters cannot see but players can) have been sculpted and painted in a way to always keep you "in the game" which is a credit to the level of detail that has been given.

The only critique I have of this set is kind of a big deal, at least for me: Out of all the sets I own (Room Set / Room and Passage / Den of Evil / Catacombs / Octagonal Room / Ice Caverns) this is the only one that seems incomplete if you only order one set. What I mean is that it seems impossible to create one "room" by using all the pieces of the set. This is due to the set having 5 corner walls (or 6 if you use the Corner Conversion Wall). No matter how I combine these pieces to create one self contained room with one entry point I always end up having one piece left over.

Also, in other sets (the Catacombs set in particular) the free standing walls greatly contribute to making a variety of set ups. With the Hellscape set the free standing walls are a NECESSITY to complete just one room as they are needed to make a straight wall to compliment the V-Wall opposite if you only have one set.

From the consumer stand point it feels like I either paid for one piece too many or I bought an incomplete set. It seems that additional pieces are mandatory if I want to use everything included in the original Hellscape set and I have not run into that problem with any other DF full set purchases until now.

Of course it may just be that I'm not creative or imaginative enough to use all the pieces of Hellscape together without help, haha! If anyone has photo or video showing layout samples I would greatly appreciate it if you posted them.

Until then I'll wait for my Hellscape 2 and Ruins sets to arrive. (woot!!)

No, I think you're right. It's a large, expensive set, and it is frustratingly limited. It wasn't until the expansion came out, really, that I found I could do much with it -- until then, I would use some (but not all) of the HS pieces for a neat accent for other settings. The floors work well under the caverns with the chasm pieces to suggest the lava at the depeest level of the volcano, etc. But the HS set on its own is definitely a set that gives you limited options -- you make one layout of a certain size and basic dimension, and then... that's about it. With more sets and the expansion you can do a lot with it, and it's a beautiful sculpt, but it doesn't have the flexibility of other sets.

I also found it frustrating that there wasn't a simple straight wall piece. There is the free-standing wall, of course, but I don't like to rely on those. I like to swap pieces out and move them around as I do a layout -- having free-standing walls as the standard makes that a lot harder. I prefer them to be used as they are in the Catacombs -- an option that expands your, er, options, but not something you HAVE to set up.

It's a fantastic set, and it gets even better the more you get, but its limitations as a basic starter set are a mark against it.

I find thatvthe hellscape set scales up amazingly well. By that i mean that every individual peice or set you add to your inventory augments the ability to create more than I would expect from simple addition.

I think this is probably true with most of the DF sets - perhaps because of the visual appeal, hellscape is extremely memorable. I have 2 of everything hellscape (except the teleporter - it was sold out) - and am actively searching for more. Its my favourite set. I dont have any catacombs or water yet so I might be biased but hellscape graps the eye like no other DF in my collection.

More hellscape. Please.

I just picked up my first Hellscape set and have a question. I haven't even set it up yet, so maybe this will seem like a ridiculous question soon, but...
What are the four little chip pieces used for?
I thought maybe they were like the flat rocks in the cavern sets, but they don't seem to fit over the exposed lava areas.
Thanks.

They are meant to be placed where HellScape meets standard Caverns, as a sort of cooled lava transition between the two lines.
