Please let us know what you think about the RotA 2 set. They should be arriving now!

Thanks again for all your support. It is very fulfilling to make stuff that people really appreciate.

Just got my ROTA 2 sets. Here are my thoughts...

First, a confession. While I adore ROTA (some of you may recall my insane ROTA anticipation frenzy from last winter) -- it may be my favorite DF setting -- I wasn't THAT excited for ROTA2. It felt mostly like the same thing with slight tweaks for more versatility -- long walls, big floors, diagonal corners. Sure, I was looking forward to the stairs, and the doors, and the columns... but the set didn't seem like the quantum leap forward that the first set had been. Just filling things in around the edges.

And the funny thing is, while in many ways I still feel that's true, I'm nonetheless totally blown away by how much I love this set. The long walls and big floors are fantastic -- and there's a little surprise that I haven't seen ANYBODY mention regarding ***********(edited by the DF team) I won't spoil it in case I wasn't the only one who hadn't heard about it. But it's neat.

The columns, due to being square instead of round, really have a lot of display options - you can create little chambers out of them, you can set them into walls, you can place them in the middle of one of the room/passage pieces to add some flavor. Great.

But really what gets me excited is the stairs. This is such an innovative design -- you can make several kinds of altar/dais out of this, you can get any number of variations in "grand staircase" designs. The white tiles look fantastic, the whole thing is just perfect. I had already known the stairs were the star of this set for me, but really they just can't be over-praised. They're stunning.

Another pleasant surprise was the rubble -- there's a lot more of it included than I expected, and it really looks great. In person, it seems larger, taller than in the pics. There's enough here to really rubble up a space, too. From the pics, I thought we were getting just a few small bits of rubble which might make good cover for gaming, but wouldn't really be useful for diorama builders and amateur photographers like me. Not so. There's enough here to not only make a room well and truly ruined, but enough of both sizes of rubble pieces to create rubble piles of various sizes and shapes. Like the stairs, in many ways, there are modular pieces here that you can re-arrange in countless ways.

I'm always going to prefer the sets that give me things I don't have already, things that stand out in a display and make people say "Wow, I can't believe they made THAT!" The mermaid fountain and demon arch and secret door were the first ones to get that effect for me -- since then the tavern set and cavernous water and chasm sets have done the same. ROTA did, too. I don't think things like diagonal corners get that effect, but the stairs and rubble absolutely do. FANTASTIC.

Thanks for keeping the surprise...a surprise for a little longer. We gotta let the DMs out there whip that out on the players.

Shhh.....

Please everyone keep any surprise you find in the set a secret for a few weeks to give DMs a chance to use it.

Much appreciated!

Sorry to take so long. I would have posted yesterday, but I had to work and got invited to the movies -- I should have stayed in and posted, but I'd have given away the secret, so I guess it all worked out for the best.

The canine motif works very nicely. There are several instances, from the crouching dogs on the double doors to the icon-like face on the 6"x6" floors to the sleeping dog on the 6" wall piece. The figures are cunningly sculpted, so the exact breed is highly questionable -- the GM can make various claims about what they are, wolf or jackal or whatever.

The debris piles are good. They might be concentrated rockfalls, or they might be intentional piles.

The columns are square and solid, designed to blend seamlessly with the design of the wall pieces. They won't look out of place anywhere in a RotA setup.

The 6" walls are beautiful. The sun-face is center top, looking over two large canines guarding a smaller sleeping canine. Each set has four, enough that framing the 6"x6" floors won't be too much of a problem.

The double doors are terrific. The casting is great, the dogs are nicely detailed, and the paint on the doors looks realistically bronze. I also like the way the top of the doors curve up, and the top molding of the wall breaks to accomodate them.

The sarcophagus piece is also terrific. It is sufficiently understated that a couple of them along a wall won't necessarily dominate a room, but one of them placed correctly could be the focal point of a chamber. They could also be used as vaults for treasure or other goods.

The stairs. Oh, the stairs. You get the standard Lower Stair configuration (stairs attached to a pedestal), stairs without pedestal, "outside corner" stairs, and pedestals. There are tons of possible permutations, especially if you have multiple sets, and variety is always good. This was a great idea, and it is brilliantly executed, but there are only two pedestals, and no Upper Stairs piece -- in order to create a full flight of stairs, you have to stack another piece on at least one of the pedestals. The set needs more pedestals, or an Upper Stairs piece.

The level of "distress" is consistent with the other set; scoring on the floors, cracks in the walls and such. The stairs and pedestals, double doors, walls with sarcophagi, and diagonal walls are not distressed at all, for those who want a "new" ancient ruin.

Oh, I almost forgot the entrance piece. This is absolutely brilliant, and I'll tell you why. If you take a close look at it, the white bits around the edges and along the top of the entryway itself are pure RotA, but the flagstones are straight out of the main Fantasy line. The stones in the walls are sculpted so they fall somewhere between the two lines (closer to RotA, but a bit rougher or rounder). This means that the entrance doesn't just work with the limited edition specialty line, but also with the classic primary sets. (And as a 4" long piece, a GM could easily put this on the edge of a Cavern layout and say that someone came along and put stonework around the entrance to a cave system.) However, the piece is not conducive to placing miniatures; there are only two squares where a miniature can be put down on a stable flat surface, and those have a partial ceiling that will interfere with any miniature over an inch and a half or so. That aside, this is a wonderful addition and a very fun bonus item.

This is a very good set, and absolutely fantastic as an expansion on the original RotA. I cannot wait for RotA3.

(Well, I can, but only because I had to have my transmission fixed, and I'm a bit short for the next few months.)

Edit:

Passageways have been mentioned as "missing items", and that's a valid opinion, but I don't really see the need for extensive hallways. I think the lack of passages sets this line apart from the others, encourages us to make RotA layouts different from those in other sets, and eliminates the need for a RotA-ABS2. I like that each line isn't just a repeat of every other set with a few cosmetic changes.

A few thoughts --

It's not really that passageways are "missing" in ROTA -- there was a deliberate decision to try something different, with the special 2x2 "chambers." Those are meant to serve as passageways OR as rooms. True, they don't achieve exactly the same effect, but that was the goal at any rate...

As far as the entry piece goes, I agree that it's amazingly cool, and I always love when DF does something really different like this. A real standout piece. But I'm not sure I agree about the "bridge" style. I think that in trying to make this compatible with both ROTA and dungeon sets, they actually made it work slightly less well with either. The problem for me is the color -- it's too brown for ROTA AND for the dungeon sets. It doesn't blend well, and it disrupts the illusion that this is part of the whole arrangement. It looks "tacked on." I still really love the piece, but I don't think it works as well as might have. I do think the decision to give it flagstones that match the dungeon set is a neat idea, especially since this is the exterior wall, and need not match the interior exactly. But something that looks identical to the interior would blend better, and I think I'd have preferred that...

I got my set on Monday. I love it, although I'm going to have to pull out my scanner so I can scan the shape of the entryway. And I love the surprise, although it's a good thing the dry ice hadn't melted, or it would have spoiled.

Finally opened the box. Rota is very nice I do like the surprise. When I bought rota 2 I also got rota 1. Have to say I like them both. The detail on rota2 is super. The detAil as usual for DF is great.
But sad to say I must now place all my DF and othr gaming stuff I to storage. Selling the house and getting a bigger one just to hold all my DF stuff( just kidding). But I am getting a room just for gaming.

Sorryfir any typos I'm on my iPhone

RotA was nice, but RotA blew me away. I guess at this point, being so immersed into DF, that I'm used to having a wide variety of pieces, so it's not until I get a nice selection of ad-ons, like stairs and doors and whatnot, that a set really comes alive for me. And RotA 2 accomplishes that and then some. It's amazing!
