Happy funny story of RotA arriving:

What happen usually when the DF packages arrive to my country (Spain): The package gets to my home and always has been opened to check it in customs. I can see which side/s they have ripped the big DF box because after they finish whatever check they do, they close it with a white duct tape with the identification of the taxes agency of my country.

They usually don't have very much care of the items, and the DF boxes of every set often have been damaged (leaving me with the styrofoam box intact) and the pieces into their bags, ok, but usually there is some pieces loose into the big box, or that has been placed wrong, often risking the integrity of the piece.

Now, this time: I saw the taxes agency duct tape in the top of the box, so I crossed my fingers as usual and thought "well, let's see what now", and then I opened the big box and found a LOT of styrofoam bits (you know, those used to make the package safer for what's inside), and beneath all, the two intact RotA boxes (plus a couple of skeleton warriors set into the styrofoam bits). All intact!!! :-D I can imagine the guy/s opening the big box and looking at all that styrofoam pieces and saying "you know, I'll pass this one" XDDDD.

Conclusion: Please throw in the box as much styrofoam as you can! :-)

About the set, it's amazing as is just so usual that is no longer a surprise... an amazing piece of work and gaming art. This is much more
generic than Den of Evil, so I guess is going to see a lot more gaming!!!

Thank you very much Stefan, Jeff, DF, for another one top quality product!

Greetings,
arsthein

So now that I've had time to put some vaguely fun ROTA stuff together... a few wishes/reactions to ROTA 2....

The doors are absolutely necessary. I hope there's more than one in there, but given how fancy they are, that's probably not the case. More doors for this would be great, though.

The stairs are necessary, too, given how much fun it is to stack. Similarly, the large floor is welcome -- I wish/hope for long walls, for the same reason. Stacking and having a second floor is a great way to use this stuff.

The rubble is great -- especially for me, because I have my custom-painted floors, I like the idea of placing rubble to suggest this was once a room and now it isn't any longer....

I like the columns, too. And I would love to see more pedastal type things -- and flaming braziers, too! That seems essential for ROTA.

I suppose between the spinning medallion and the slide-out walls, we've gotten all the secret doors we're gonna get. That's a shame, though, because a secret door that spins or is hinged that actually just looks just like the regular walls would be neat.

Spiral stairs or stairs built into the floor pieces (like with the dungeon setting) would be really great, too. The free-standing stair concept which DF made dominant for both Sci-Fi and MBS can be a bit cumbersome, I think -- it requires a lot of blank wall space and takes up more room than a single floor tile, and the spiral stair (or any stair built into a wall like that) is really great and interesting.

I would really want to see railings, as I've said elsewhere.

I'd love to see plants and planters -- I have more than I can use, myself, but I think it's a great idea for them to be included in expansions. I'm curious -- people who have seen the urns in my pics, would you want an official DF version? Are they kewl accessories? Or are they a bit bland for your taste?

Good points, L.

I agree with all of them except for the plants and planters.

I'd rather DF focus their attention on other accessories such as stone benches, intact and ruined. And maybe Roman type baths ("inset" in the floor) might be cool to do. And fountains. Again, both intact and ruined versions would be great. Stone dias. Stone lecturns and tablets. In my mind the "Ancients" are / were an evolved society as displayed in the set's architecture, so I expect rooms for learning (lecture-style), experimentation or even politial discourse. Schools of magic, seats of government, wealthy guilds, etc ... (sorry, tangent)

Railings are a great idea - or even half-height walls. In "stone". As DF and it's users have evolved and stacking has become more commonplace I think railings and half-walls are a must. Maybe even a battlement crennellation ... granted, stylised for ROTA but one for MM would be welcome, too.

Oh, I can see the use of "invertable" empty planters that could double as pedestals. That way, if you choose to use them as planters, you could put in "live" or "dead" plants to help tell your story. Or, as pedestals, to mount any type of miniature as statuary.

My biggest request, and I mentioned their lack after seeing the first photos of the ROTA set, is for doors. I love the idea of the slide-in walls but they are only at the 4x4 intersections and do not have the flexibility of defining spaces and rooms like a typical door. We've seen the one door type for ROTA 2 and I hope we get several of them but I think another set of simpler interior doors might be a good idea as well.

Just some more thoughts for consideration. I just wish we didn't have to wait 'til summer 2010 for the ROTA 3 set (Jeff mentioned that elsewhere). It's kind of like reading a trilogy and then having to wait for the author to finish book three before you can continue with the story.

Maybe some Arches such as L has created? I would like doors as well, but ROTA almost feels like open arches would be more appropriate for defining different "rooms" than doors would in some cases....?

Ooo, yes, arches, too !! I totally agree !!

Maybe ones that can somehow link together to allow them to even be used as "walls" in an open cloister sort of way.

Stefan, want to enlist some apprentice sculptors to help get all this in the works sooner rather than later ? ;)

What?? railings!?!?!? Follow the Empire, only put railings in places where they really need it, like where really old men hang out, the rest of the galaxy doesn't need no stinking railings! I mean look it's not like they helped at Bespin so why bother... :)

"Now your rebel fleet will face the power of this fully armed and operational battle station!"

"NO! It looks incomplete, still in construction!"

"Ha! A mere illusion! The only work that remains is to block the core of the station so that a large freighter couldn't fly in and blow it up, and also to place a railing or some kind of containment lid over that bottomless energy chasm over there -- but these are low priority! Only a crazy, scoundrel-turned-hero-general would pilot a freighter inside this station's core, and the only one strong enough to throw me into the energy chasm would be my own apprentice-whom-I'm-planning-to-replace-or-maybe-I'll-just-kill-his-son! My plan is foolproof! FOOLPROOF!"

Slide in arches would be cool. Well lots of doors of different type and decay.

So would floor pieces with bath house type motif. I think railings and 6" walls would be a necessary.

I am not to keen on urns, vases, or statues, but rather see more columns, stairs, railings, maybe aqueduct wall and floor pieces.

Some more crypt like pieces similar to the RotA 2 walls with sarcophagi. I really really like the dog head motif in the RotA 2 set better than the sun head.

Oh, really? Wow, I feel totally the opposite. For one thing, I feel that jackals are in general more ominous and freaky -- it's not really the "vibe" I personally want for ROTA. I also feel that with DoE we already have a creepy locale. The sun stuff really makes ROTA stand out for me as different and unexpected, and I would love to see more of it. To be honest, the jackals in the floor and on the doors in ROTA2 are probably my least favorite aspects of that set. I'd much prefer alternatives there. But ah well, you get what you get.

Me, too. Not necessarily "better" than the sun head, but I've seen enough of that in the first ROTA set.

I see the "dog" head not so much as a "dog" or a "jackal" but more of a wolf. Which, in my mind is a nice tie-in to our own "Realm of the Ancients" in Rome. The Legend tells that the founder of Rome, Romulus, and his brother, Remus, were raised by wolves.

That, and I'm an old 40K Space Wolf fan.

I'd love to see some fountains! Especially if the water was a seperate piece so that it could be removed, as I would often expect to find an empty fountian in the ROTA.

I think that "paraphernalia" would be what I'd like to see. Fountains, dais (a word that I learned at 10 years of age because of D&D!), statues, altars, walls modelling after crypt walls underneath churches... that kind of stuff.
