Stefan, Jeff,

A cavern wicked editions would be great. Tar pits, lava pits, and mushrooms oh my. Lots of mushrooms, at least 4-5 differnt colors and sizes. What do you think?

-Shadox

YES! I would love to see some cavernous mushrooms in a wicked additions set for our caverns! Man, that would be very cool!

Feed back on Chasm Set

I just got mine yesterday. I like the set, the Stalagmites are some of the most beautiful pieces todate but...
they feel like filler pieces. This set makes about my 26th boxed set of Master Maze so I have become accustomed to quality work. However, bang for buck this set is lacking. My first thought when I openned the outer box was, boy, this sure is a small set. Once I set all the pieces out my next thought was, this is a very small set. Other than the incredible stalagmites the rest of the pieces are quite plain. Now, this is as they should be because they are for creating chasms. But for $110 I expected much more. It is a nice addition to my collection but I have to say that it seems highly overpriced.

I have to say I agree with you -- recall the Cavern Set originally cost around $120 or so, it's really striking that such a small set, with such highly specific uses, would cost the same. The water sets were expensive because of all the resin and the involved process of working out the kinks -- but why these pieces?

I assume that the price of production has gone up and in general DF has had to adjust their prices to remain viable as a company, that this is such a small niche market. It's a shame, and it does feel like this is getting even MORE expensive as a hobby (a shame, since the one criticism of DF I hear consistently is that it is too expensive) -- but it may just be an unavoidable reality. If we want it, if they're going to keep making it, they have to be profitable. The old price scheme doesn't seem to have been....

I used the chasm set pieces in my latest build, and it was really great. I'll see if I can post some pictures soon. I combined it with regular cavern and cavernous passage pieces and cavern lake and river pieces and the end result was a beautiful cavern with 3-D possiblities for battle for the players in my D&D game. We used the set to try out a first level adventure with Fourth Edition D&D rules (with what bits and pieces were revealed at ENWorld). It was a great game and the 3-D nature of the chasm additions made it all the better.

While many of the bits are small, remember there is one MASSIVE individual item in the new set. The out-cropping bit on the 4x4 is Heavy, i don't have a scale handy but in just a bit of hefting it and compairing to a wall/floor combo from caverns the two of them in different hands, i would hazard that, that one bit is 2 maybe 3 times a heavy as one of the 4x4 floor wall combos from the first cavern set. If it weights more a good chunk of the cost could be in the materials for that one item. it is pretty massive. and is "worth" three to maybe four of the other items from cavern 1.

I wasn't saying that the pieces were small. I was saying that the whole set was small, compared to the large price.

This set just doesn't have the bang for buck that most sets in the past have had.

I've recently used the Chasm Set in my biweekly D&D game, and it's been a blast. The players got nervous facing a 5' wide causeway over a sheer abyss, depth unknown.

Some of the fun has been the Dwarf fighter using an action point to emulate the feat Improved Bull Rush to shove an ogre off the causeway into the chasm. This last session used the stone outcroppings as the hiding spots for two Large cave fishers. The group is heavily melee oriented and so this had them at a disadvantage (the knight's squire got pulled into the chasm to bounce off a wall for 2d6 damage).

The Chasm Set adds enough variables to the Cavern Set to make the players sweat, which is just what I want.

Stefan, thank you so much for this set. I can't wait to see what you dream up next.
