One of my buddies who DM's games often borrows my sets. He saw the new chasm set last week so I waited to see what he thought. When he had looked at it for a while he said, "Its good to see they are still developing some $60 sets."

Umm...no, not quite.

Okay, let's do some simple math.

Cavernous Chasm Set
$109 divided by 22 pieces comes to $4.96 per piece.
Weight: 6.5 lbs

Cavernous Passage Set
$109 divided by 17 pieces comes to $6.41 per piece.
Weight: 14 lbs

Cavern Set
$129 divided by 23 pieces comes to $5.61 per piece.
Weight: 12 lbs

Are we all talking about the same set? Because this set has nearly as many pieces as the original Cavern Set, and more than the Cavernous Passage Set.

Not quite a fair comparison -- one small ledge piece compared to, say, a cavernous corner piece? With four pieces from the Cavern Set, you can make a whole cavern room -- with four pieces from the chasm set, you can't do nearly as much.

Not to diss the chasm set, which I think is great and cool -- but there's no denying, in my mind, that it's far more expensive. It may be inevitable, that time has passed and costs have escalated. But I don't think you can equate the pieces in the chasm set with the pieces in the original cavern set. The latter are bigger, more useful, and more essential. If the sets cost roughly the same per piece, that still makes the chasm set more expensive to my mind.

But -- to each his own. For people who don't feel this set was more pricey -- more power to ya!

I wasn't saying that the pieces were small. I was saying that the whole set was small, compared to the large price.
The argument on the table seemed to be about the number of pieces, not the size.

Returning to the actual size of the pieces, yes they are smaller. By weight and volume, this set is approximately half the size of other sets. However, half the materials does not necessarily translate to half the price. And if we speculate that smaller pieces may involve production costs that other pieces don't (perhaps breakage during removal from molds, as smaller pieces might be less sturdy, or more frequently replaced molds for the large showcase piece), then the cost of production rapidly approaches that of other sets.

In any case, it is a very good additions/accessory set, and as soon as I have the coin I mean to buy two of them.

I think that the last line of jackattack's previous post says it all. We can argue and post opinion about value for money but, at the end of the day, it's down to supply and demand - if we're willing to pay for it, then it will continue to sell for the price its posted at.

If we won't/can't then DF will either have to lower its profit margin and/or go out of business. I think it is the most "expensive" set produced so far in terms of bangs for your buck but I've still bought 3 of them. It is a real luxury niche market so I guess it is a pretty 'price inelastic' product - just look at Games Workshop prices!

Hey, for heavy-duty cast resin modular terrain pieces, sculpted to an amazing level of detail and beautifully painted, I still think that Master Maze is a great bargain.

I've invested well over five grand in this stuff, and I don't regret a dime I've spent (though my wife is convinced I'm crazy).

This is the best addiction I've ever had!

ok lets go...

The set is what really lacked for a long time, sime cool additions to make the caves look more natural.
I would recommend the set for caveset owners just as the Wicked addition set for Dungeon owners.

This one has outstanding pieces, as well as simple build ones and so it will be used in every setup that
includes cave pieces.

now revisiting the pieces on their own:

x4 Curved Chasm Ledge
x2 T-shaped Chasm Ledge
x2 Straight Chasm Ledge 1
x1 Straight Chasm Ledge 2
useful for creating chasms, they are ok for what you get, nothing really spectacular but very versatile and useful.

x1 4”x 4” Cavernous Platform
my favorite piece of the set, great detail makes this one an outstanding addition to any larger cave.
An alternate sculpt would be a blast (in cavern setups alternate sculpts help to get the feel of natural rocks)

x2 Small Cavernous Platform
looks great, versatile use as platform or stalagmite column. Also a very needed addition. An alternate scoulpt
would be cool to have from this one.

x2 Stalagmite Cluster
great detail, love the work on the piece. Only drawback for me is that it is double the height of the DF-Standard. When
building caves in advance and putting cardboard sheets on the prevend peeking the can't stand right up. This is the
only reason they are inferior to the 4”x 4” Cavernous Platform in m opinion.

x2 Cavernous Narrow Stairs
Very much needed for Multilevel setups. But a bit too small in my opinion. If ever an alternate sculpt is thought of a
would like a broader stair as in the Lake Expansion.

x2 Cavernous Pillars
Useful and needed, but not as versatile as the Platform. Again an alternate scoulpt would be cool.

x2 Cavernous Walkway
a must have to get all those Battle at Kazad Dum feelings togehter. Not very versatile, but it will have ists uses.

x2 Curved Cavern Wall Filler
A very good addition. Would recommend to throw in 2 of these in the cavern set if there is a new run of these. Or at least
there should be a set of 4 or a set of 10 for us old collectors to get our hands on.

To be honest, I hadn't planned on getting one of these sets, mainly due to lack of use and cash. NOW, thanks to you guys, I'm looking at 2-3 sets!
Buncha plasticrackheads, you are!
And I'M just as bad!
Oh well, it's better than drugs - and safer (I think)!
And (a little bit) cheaper, too!

After using this set, I am highly impresses and I wouldn't leave home without one.

First off, the curved cavern wall filler... just awesome! The ledges and walkways really let your cavern sets shine. If you have any cavern sets at all, you really need 2-3 of the chasm sets. It turns a cool cavern setup into something really great!
