Feedback on Sci-Fi Beta set 8 Years, 1 Month ago
Just got my two sets today! This will probably be briefer than other reviews (and haphazardly written), but since no one else has posted yet I figured I might as well get things kicked off.

The pieces in the set look great! I really like how the 'force-field' doors turned out, and I'm hoping that DF will come out with some other door colors to swap in and out (for the old find the keycard that matches the door routine). Or perhaps some inventive person out there will find a 'good-enough' stand-in for us. The computer consoles did turn out better than I expected (though 1 of mine looks like someone forgot to paint the back). The consoles look rather lonely though, and I really hope some more accessories like this come out in the future.

I don't know why, but as soon as I opened the 6" walls and hallways, the phrase 'endless space-station coridors' came to mind. I really think these are what I was looking forward to the most, and even as simple as they are, they didn't let me down.

All the curved pieces in the set really look great as well. A much needed addition to the sci-fi line. I do still think it strange that 3 curved passages are included (rather than 2 or 4), but that's just me liking things nice and even.

My one bad note is not on the set itself but in the way it was shipped to me. My two sets basically had a strip of cardboard wrapped around the sides and taped so that the set boxes themselves formed the actual top and bottom of the shipping package (my extra walls were sandwiched between the two sets in a layer of foam peanuts). Meaning that when I peeled the tape off the package, I ripped up the set boxes a bit. I know it's a really minor nitpick, but it's really a shame that such a wonderful product didn't get packaged a little better.

Overall I'm well pleased with my purchase and look forward with hope that Sci-Fi Gamma (or even a small 'Sci-Fi Accessories' set) comes out "soon".

Yep, got mine today and WOW!!!!!

I've already got ideas for additions. I'm planning to make a partial cast of the curved corner, cut the floor off it even with the wall (I KNEW that Dremel jig saw was good for something!) and then notch the floor for the pressure-bottle-thingy on the inside curve of the curved passage. That way, I can have a curved passage that contains a room.
Of course, having seen the 6" walls from DF, I just threw away MY version of the 6" walls! For one thing, they never did really work, with the resin getting all soft from so much colorant in the one set, and not pouring enough resin in the white one, so it lost half the bottom. For another thing, they just don't match up with the GREAT goody-work on BOTH SIDES of the wall! KEWL!

With 6 Starters, 6 Passages, 3 Alphas, and 2 Betas, PLUS th extra walls, I think I'm ready to do a sci-fi setup. Perhaps as soon as next weekend, on the risers?

Watch these spaces.

See ya!

Feedback/Review of Beta

Contents:
6” Long Passage (2)
6” Long Wall (2)
Curved Passage Piece (3)
Curved Corner Wall (4)
Curved ½ Floor (4)
Straight Porthole Wall (4)
Archway (w/force field insert) (4)
Computer Panel (2)

Price: $89.00 (intro?)

Component Review:
Beta is in some respects a very Basic expansion set, and when I say that it is not by any means meant as a detraction from Beta, it is actually a very good thing.
Beta has some very classic and in my opinion much needed elements in it. The classic needed elements are the 6 inch long items, both the Passages and the Walls. The most needed item, and one that is so useful it can be bought on it’s own, is the long 6 inch wall. The long walls complement Alpha, the first expansion, incredibly well. Alpha gives you the ability to produce large open rooms, to expand upon the Starter Set, but had some functional limitations if all you had were Starter sets, you quickly got much more floor space than you had walls to contain, the arrival of Beta solves this problem providing walls that match the floor space allowing for a quick set up of large areas. The ability to purchase the long walls alone is a great addation, but isn’t really covered in a review of Beta.
The long walls and long passages are the core, basic elements of Beta that make it a solid base expansion, but with the ability to purchase the most requested item on it’s own it could lead to the question of why make a Beta Set?, and the answer is the other items that take it from beyond a basic set into a cool expansion.

The Curved items are a wonderful addition, and pull this from a nice basic set into something worthy of an expansion. The curved passages are classic expansion material for Dwarven Forge, only one set has them appearing as a base element, in the Cavernous passage set; getting one, for fantasy two were not available until the first wicked additions set. This second Sci-fi offering drops 3 curved passages on you. The curved walls/passages are something that is almost a requisite for re-creating the feeling of being inside a certain space ships or space stations (you know the ships I’m, talking about), that combined with the curved walls, give a very sci-fi feel to many locations and are welcome additions to almost any genre of sci-fi (While not out of place in Fantasy there are so many sci fi locations with curves they were begging to be done). Adding the curved filler sections to make the curved walls fit into a set up's 2 inch square foot is a nice touch and even should allow for some interesting options of creating large open pits in the floor if you choose not to use them as wall filler.

The Porthole wall gives added functionality, even more wall elements, something that you always seem to be lacking in the starter set. Not only do they add straight up functionality they create dynamic elements that can be used within games, ranging from arrow slit like uses for within buildings/ships, to security check points, using them as described as port holes/windows are great additions, and I’m sure we will see other uses by the creative users of DF.

The Archway with Force field is an interesting element, and one that I like but it is not the most impressive addition to the set. The basis and idea for the insert is well thought out and executed and the force field is an effect that I like, but the door is a rehash of the basic door, while nothing wrong in itself, why should DF reinvent the wheel? and it is nice to get more of the useful for other things doorframes. The break from the other style of door inserts in a setup might lack continuity for some. The idea of a force field “door” is classic Sci-fi and it is a welcome addition, but using the same frame to create it is cost effective, but lacking some of the “wow” factor, and just a minor complaint in the concept. For me not having it slide into the door frame but be a separate effect two inches wide that you could place into the hallway/wall gap would have been cooler, or go with a different door frame, to really set the force field apart. Or if staying with the door frame add a few of the door inserts so you use them instead of the force field if you didn’t want to use it, this could have been a nice added touch in this reviews opinion, for continuity sake in a set up.

The Computer panel is the last element and something while done well, is lacking for me. It is lacking not for concept or look but the desire to see more to get some other furnishings things to put into a set up, it just wets the appetite and doesn’t satisfy the desire/need to get added scenery elements. The one element makes/just highlights the rest of the emptiness if all you have is DF. Adding another scenery element to go along with the terrain would have been great, the pair of computer banks makes one hope for more to come, but also makes one feel sorry for the Computer and hope they have no AI, for if they look that lonely one could only imagine what the AI’s of the console would feel being all alone and just having a twin to talk to.

Look:
While I might be wrong on this, not having the Alpha with me at the time of writing, Beta seems to expand the color scheme of Sci-Fi. While it is hard to tell what colors are in the Alpha under flooring from the picture, Beta brings coppery/bronze elements into the fore front with large sections and decorations on the passages using it, and I think adds a touch more of, if not right out, being the first appearance of green to many of the lights and panels going past the blue/red/yellow into more colors, the bronze is defiantly more visible being on the large columns and not just on the hidden floor panels any more. A great job of adding a few details that enhance the set but don’t make it not match the previous line.

Over all Beta is a great set, some classic base items that are needed and useful and go well with both Alpha and the Core. While Alpha could work well with out the Passage set, to get full use out of Beta one really needs the Sc-fi passage and if you don’t have it about half of Beta will not appeal to you.

That was a very well written review GS of anything, let alone the Beta set.
I would expect such a well written review in one of the industry's periodicals, not on a gaming forum.
Thank you for taking the time to do this so well and to then share it with all of us.

thanks for the kind words RabidFox*.

I did something similar in the Sci-Fi Sets Comment Corner thread some time back for the first three, but not quite as long, and figured i would do the same for the newer set. This is the Feedback set, and wanted a chance to do a decent examination of Beta and how it works with the other three.

Just wish in that older one and in this newer one were more polished, my quirky little brian hadn't been acting up so much. I went back and edited this one a bit. To fix those odd phrases and word couplings i just am incapable of seeing some times. I haveD sylexia, and some times no matter how much i read a section i just can't get past what i think it should say to what it actually does say. I have to let the piece rest untill it gets flushed from the mind. I had a bit of a chance to do it with the above one, and you would be suprised at the number i did manage to see, but didn't get them all. Should make more sense now...

GS -

You may have dyslexia, but it doesn't stop you thinking! You have a way of, to quote a certain campy SF show from the late '70's, "cutting through the felgercarb"!
Anyone who can bring together a review as concise and analytical as the one you posted; Mister, you do just fine!
Besides, I've seen your Season I and Season II Jedi posts; incredible. And ya know something else that I've noticed? I don't even take note of word transpositions and typos (or at least, that's what I always thought they were!) as I'm reading along in your posts. I'm so busy grooving on WHAT you're saying, I don't have time for HOW you say it!
And to be frank, when a writer has something that GOOD to say (go as to message, not as to opinion of subject matter), then who cares how it's written, as long as it's comprensible? Or to rephrase it, as long as I can read and understand what you're saying, as long as I can receive the message, then whether you're transmitting AM, FM, PCM, or some other transmission method, doesn't matter! The important part is the CONTENT - and friend, YOU got content! Whether I agree with it or not (sometimes yes, sometimes no), I can understand it. Half the time, I don't even notice typos, etc., until the second time through.
Don't apologise for something that you didn't do; stand up, beat your chest, and say "Hey! This is what I think, and you can agree or not, your choice. What do YOU think?"

By the way: I mostly DO agree with you on this one. Probably the one argument I would offer is that if I am correct about what ships would use the curved corridors, that would make for an awfully small heavy cruiser, especially around Deck 7!
And yes, the computer consoles are better than nothing, but I think Stefan could do better; we've all seen his work! :D :D :D
But that's just my opinion.

Hang in there, GS. Ya done GOOD.

See ya!

Hey, sweet review GS! Thanks for your time in putting it together! Now I'm looking forward EVEN MORE to my Betas.... should be tomorrow!

BTW, have you considered putting this review up on a gaming review site? Perhaps like RPG.net? With links to some of the threads in the Cool Photos section, it would surely get the word of mouth of DF stuff out there even more!

jkratzer..

it was more i was annoyed at myself, some times i don't bother to proof read what i write becuase i know i miss lots of things. But i tried very hard on this one, pulled out about 95% of my tricks to catch things and was annoyed that i still missed So many.... I only do about 75% of the tricks to catch stuff on the Write ups for the games (season ii etc.) but i actually tried to get them all, re-read the thing alot and was just really annoyed at myself that i missed that many. When i really didn't think there were any in it.

I enjoy the writting, heck i actually joke that if it weren't for the dsylexia (and that there are no jobs in it) i would have been an english major over going into science. I have always scored better on the Verbal/english in standardized tests than i did on the Math, even the Science, and i kicked ass on both the Biochem Cell and Mol Bio and Biology GRE's. But i have develpoed some technicques in both writting style and proof reading to try to get around some of the mental blockages, most of the time it doesn't bother me when something comes out that way, every now and then it does.

heheh as to the "ship"... i purposfully left it open ended for what ever sci-fi universe you like, human nature is for people to generally plop in thier favorite that the corridors work for, but just about every tv show i can think of, and lots of movies have some scene with these gently curving passages.
You tend to see it more in TV shows, the whole issue of reusing set bits over and over and those shots of them walking in those gently curved hallways, they usally curve so that they don't have to make more set either CG or real. The rest of the ship just curves out of frame...

And you can always make the deck bigger by adding in a few of the striaght passages, or ones with intersections etc...

Fu-Man Chu
Actually no, i hadn't tought of doing that, don't go to RPG.net much, but they or ENWorld maybe even Gaming Reporter i think all have review sections may have to look into it. Even finish the one i did for DoE.

I also endorse you putting your review up with pic links somewhere it could do some good.
You might want to e-Mail Stefan and ask his opinion about where your review could do the most damage GS.

Ska,

Like I said, you do alright when you get your beauty sleep. :D :D
Seriously, when I'm reading along in one of your articles Igenerally don't even catch any typos or other errors; I'm so damned engrossed in WHAT you're saying, I haven't a clue as to HOW you're saying it!

And THAT, sir, is the sign of a GOOD author.

See ya!

Just got my Beta set in. I agree with most of the previous posts. Good stuff. Only complaint I have is that the paint seems to lack the wash of the previous sets and you can really tell whic pieces are from Beta when combined with the older sets.
